While we are discussing spuds, can anyone confirm if my skin n blisters reason for voting out in the upcoming referendum is valid. She states Jersey Royal don't taste as good as they used to because Euro bureaucrats have banned the Channel Island farmers from surrounding their plants with seaweed.

We aren't in the EU so it shouldn't matter. The mad rush to get them out the ground as soon as possible has meant they've lost all the flavour, farmers still use seaweed & manure on the soil, but increasingly more chemicals with less recovery time for the land. I think they traditionally used to let the fields lie fallow every 3rd or 4th year but with competition so high from everywhere else, they need to maximise the harvest.

My neighbour still grows them and they're by far the best we can get.

It's the stuff in fertilizers that runs off into the water supply, can't remember which chemical exactly, a nitrate of some description.

It's ammonia- nitrogen (and it could well be potassium as well) as both of these are in cow poo and are also soluble in water. You probably don't want the phosphorous or organic nitrogen in the water either but, these are suspended solids and can be filtered out.

What about Swifts then....only land to lay eggs and feed young. Rest of their lives in the air.
Or dolphins...why don't they drown while having a kip?
