They're usually for telephones - and when I was a nipper, I used to think that customers kept putting their telephone bills in them and British Telecom as it was then had got fed up with it.

In the lights in an operating theatre, why are the bulbs lots of different colours?

Presumably they cover the full colour spectrum.

Different bulbs come in different colour temperatures and give off different coloured light - this can affect how things appear to the eye. I'd imagine surgeons need to be able to ensure that they can see everything 100% clearly.

You'd be amazed how different a slight change in colour temperature can make things appear different colours.

In a similar vein there are similar relics on the left hand side as you pull into Liverpool Street. I think they're something to do with the old railway companies that served Liverpool Street and Old Broad Street.
