West Ham Utd 3 Liverpool 1 (27/02/11)
We seem to be finding the net on a regular basis now and if you do that, you are always in with a shout, plus we are due a win against one of the 'bigger' clubs as our record recently has not been the best. Let's hope this changes Sunday.
I would make two changes from tonight for the visit of Liverpool.
O'Neil in for Sears and Da Costa in for Reid.

Why is everyone so quick to ditch Sears? He was excellent tonight and has been good in most of the games he's played this season.

Agreed.fjthegrey wrote:Why is everyone so quick to ditch Sears? He was excellent tonight and has been good in most of the games he's played this season.
However against Liverpool it would be wise to go with the solidity of O'Neil.

Re: West Ham Utd v Liverpool: match thread
Exactly my thinking, I'd play him over O'Neil. O'Neil is a less attacking player than Sears and with Gary, Parker, Noble and Hitz as a midfield 4 it is too similar and theres not much creativity.fjthegrey wrote:Why is everyone so quick to ditch Sears? Id go:
..........................Green...................
Jacobsen....Da Costa...Tomkins...Bridge
........Noble............Parker..........Hitz......
................Sears..................Ba...............
..............................Cole........................
Subs: Boffin, Reid, Spector, O'Neil, Obinna?, Hines, Piq
Could be a more solid side but i think we need to attack Liverpool from the off. The players need to give the fans something to feed off and vise versa. We can't sit back because we wont get out of the blocks and have a chance.

Re: West Ham Utd v Liverpool: match thread
I dont see a threat down Liverpools left side to warrant playing a defensive minded player. Play the same formation as tonight and perhaps try and get Gabbs or Da Costa in for Reid. The only change I'd consider making in the attack is Sears for Obi. Switch sides with Ba.stubbsy07 wrote: Agreed.

They are far from a good team, we should go at them, play to our strengths which are very much attack based.

Would play a 442 against them. 433 left us very exposed down the wings tonight and against better quality opposition like Liverpool we would have been put bed to quickly.

SO7,
good one mate, good luck. Think Obinna really needs to be in this one, as could really have a go at Carragher and
we know it can be done.

Its worth having Hines on the bench for round 2 Vs Carragher
He absolutlely slaughtered him last time at UP

thats the thing, if Hines slaughtered Carragher, what do you think Obinna could do against him. Agree if Hines fit,
would be good to find a spot for him on the bench. We know we won't keep a clean sheet, so by whatever means possible we
need goals and take it to them from the off. Oh and win corners/free kicks, because Hitz with a inswinging left, something we havn't had for a long time. I actually like to say this, but we probably have our most dangerous/goal scoring team since Ashton and Bellamy. Hope i am right, because we will need to outscore opponents. No more Curbs discussions, no more squeeky 1-0's this is all about fire power up front. Going to be a wild ride.

Forgetting non-events like v Birmingham recently. The forward line look exciting since the transfer window, but not every game so far.miami-hammer wrote: we probably have our most dangerous/goal scoring team since Ashton and Bellamy.

agreed, but there is definitely imo a feeling of we can score goals in the squad since Keane, Ba arrived. For the first time, in a long
time we have real attacking options. Question is how much time is needed to get them to gel. Tonight was massive for that.
Defending, well we've basically given up on that hav'nt we if we're honest. This team now is nothing like the narrow 0-1 loss agains't the Arsenal at the end of October. With the signings we've made and unfortunately injuries, its go for goals, not clean sheets. IIRC, thats the first five goal haul since Burnley last year, was at that game and tonight was'nt worried at 4-1. Thats a scary thought !.
Cheers

Re: West Ham Utd v Liverpool: match thread
If we go 4-3-3 our wide forwards will both need to work as hard as Sears did tonight, but I can see us getting a point if not three on Sunday if we play to our potential.
Tough choice about Tomkins partner at CB: Reid is making mistakes largely due to being hesitant, whereas Da Costa drops clangers by being rash/over-confident.

I'm unsure on Hitzlsperger.
Looked rusty and short of sharpness last night. It would be very dangerous to risk him in a game where he won't get half the time on the ball as he did last night.

Re: West Ham Utd v Liverpool: match thread
I'm going to agree with RARS, playing Hitz last night was a given, he had a decent game, give him another reserve game before we throw him in an important Premier League game.
O'Neil had just started to work better with Jacobsen, I see no reason to keep him out.

Bring on Super Specs if we need Meireles taken out of the game.
