Wellington Phoenix v West Ham United
Wednesday 23 July 2014, 7.30pm (local time)
Eden Park, Auckland, New Zealand

Eden Park is New Zealand's largest stadium. Our rich sporting and social history, and our international profile, is unmatched by any other stadium in the country.

Eden Park has been in existence as a sports ground since 1900. It began its life as a swamp, but by 1914 the ground was drained and turned into two ovals.

The Park became the home of Auckland Cricket in 1910. The Auckland Rugby Union leased the Park in 1914, officially making Eden Park its home in 1925.

In 1926 a Trust was set up that provided for a group of Trustees to manage Eden Park primarily for the benefit of Auckland Cricket and Auckland Rugby. The Trust still manages the Park today.

HISTORY

In 2007, professional football in New Zealand was rescued when Wellington property developer Terry Serepisos and Century City Football secured a three-year sub-licence to run a team in the Hyundai A-League – Australasia’s premier professional football competition. After the Football Kingz (2005/06) and the New Zealand Knights (2006/07) imploded, it looked certain that Football Federation Australia would pull the pin on a professional New Zealand-based club in the Hyundai A-League. But a small group of people passionate about football in New Zealand kept hopes alive, working tirelessly to convince the FFA that a professional club could survive across the ditch. The Phoenix were awarded a license to play in the Hyundai A-League on 19th March, 2007 and on Sunday 26th August, 2007, Wellington’s first ever professional football teamed took to Westpac Stadium in a credible 2-2 draw with A-League powerhouse the Melbourne Victory.

Since then the Phoenix has gone from strength to strength: 500,000 people have gone through the gates to watch a Wellington Phoenix A-League match, the Phoenix has broken records for attendances at a football match in New Zealand twice with sell out crowds for the LA Galaxy and David Beckham in 2007, and again in the finals playoffs against the Newcastle Jets in 2010. The Phoenix has appeared in the A-League playoffs two seasons in a row.

In September 2011, the Phoenix was taken over by Welnix, a consortium of some of Wellington's most successful and influential businessmen. With business acumen and professional intergrity unparallelled in New Zealand business, this consortium has secured the future of the Phoenix for many years to come.

Today the Wellington Phoenix is an important and integral part of New Zealand’s sporting landscape, enjoying passionate support from all over New Zealand and the world. With a strong suite of corporate sponsors, a passionate supporter base and the support of the Wellington community in general, the Wellington Phoenix’s future looks bright.

PREVIOUS MATCH

Ipswich Town 0 - 0 West Ham United

West Ham United assistant boss Neil McDonald felt his side handled the step up in class of opposition well following Wednesday's 0-0 draw at Sky Bet Championship side Ipswich Town.
After drawing 2-2 at League Two side Stevenage at the weekend, McDonald was pleased to see West Ham in tighter mood defensively, and although they could not force a breakthrough, he was nevertheless happier with the tempo and rhythm to their play.
Macca says the Hammers have made solid progress in the two weeks of pre-season to date and he looks forward to seeing that upward curve continue as they head to New Zealand for the Football United tour next.
"It was a great test," he said. "The game itself was played at a higher tempo which was excellent and it's the second game in three or four days that everyone's got through.
"We kept a clean sheet this time, although we haven't scored, and there's still lots to do.
"In the first half we tested their goalkeeper and we missed the target on a couple of occasions, but that will sharpen up as time goes on. Even in the second half we created a fair few chances and I'm not too sure our goalkeeper's had a save to make, so that's pleasing.
"The tempo was much better than on Saturday and that's what we're looking to improve on every single game in pre-season.
"We're still mixing the teams up, nothing's solid and nothing's set, so we'll try different partnerships, different ways of playing and we'll get it right for the first game of the season."

Funnily enough that's actually a business centre and a bus interchange station!

I can't wait for the game tomorrow.

As the biggest city, I guess the Phoenix thought they'd sell more tickets / make more money....

going to back fire a bit, unfortunately, Wednesday nights in the middle of winter in Auckland don't get huge crowds.

I assume this will be another game where we see 22 players used??

Very much hope to see Carroll get a run out. 25 days from the kick off he should really have 30 mins in him.

I went to the NZ vs West Indies T20 international in January there. The ground is that good it has genuinely made me think about going there for the World Cup this season coming for a game.

Would be amazing to see a union game there.

Absolutely superb job Ricardo.

Any chance we can have a Ricardo/Dyer tag team next season, so we get both sexy info and a guaranteed win?
