Aston Villa 1 West Ham Utd 2 (14/01/06)

great day ... was in the pub by 11 ... so in a bit of a muddle by the match...
- saw quite a few people being escorted away outside the ground before kick off..
is this just the birmingham police force or did i miss something...
- the home support was pretty poor as are a lot of other clubs... just one rendition of 'veeeela veeeela' and that was about it and then cap that with 5 minutes to go when they were pushing for an equaliser (not very hard i might add) half their fans had gone... same as birmingham before christmas...
- katan came on and did not contribute much, that is not to say he was not good he just did not run at 'veeela' s defence or make a few incredible pin point 50 yard passes ... but then i think his job would have been keep the ball we are winning 'nothing silly'
his well talked about free kick was accurate (good for us) but not enough pace on it ala beckham....
-was reallly expecting the kid who ran on to get toms shirt to get nicked by the brummy old bill and then they would have had 4000 very unhappy punters on their hands...
-after the game was dissapointed that they did not re open the pub but then on that point i would like to thank them for that - i had built up quite a thirst due to large quantities of singing and no beer in the ground- that i would have probably missed my alcohol free train back to taffy land...
bit off topic but my 5 year old daughter insisted on wearing her hammers top all day and was so excited in them winning, she now wants to go and see them play... when is the next kids for a quid game ? ....and you cut out alll the tight wad comments as well

I'm glad I went to that one - Hammers support were brilliant.
First half was a bit quiet on and off the pitch but second half we all came alive - Shaun Newton seemed to realise his position was under pressure and did some great runs and was really battling to keep the ball. Matty back to his best and Marlon (apart from 1 spectacular miss) and Bobby letting us know that they don't think we need a new striker.
I definately think our support makes a big difference - my voice is still a bit rough this morning.
And all Villa fans could come up with were feeble enquiries as to our identity.

I think he was just nervous and couldn't bear to watch!! Obviously a lot of faith in Marlons Pens! :lol:bluebutterfly wrote:Maybe a stupid question, but why was Repka looking the other way when the penalty was taken???
I remember Phil Parkes doing the same thing years ago. Standing behind his goal facing the crowd while a pen was being taken. Needn't have worried though with Ray Stewart taking them!.

Quality day yesterday, throat a bit sore.
Shaun Newton was imo our best player on the pitch although a tough call as especially in the second half so many were up for it. This includes Mullins, NRC, Zamaora and Marlon.
For me though Gabbidon is overall our single most important player if I had to single one out. No one spectacular reason, just solid reliable and consistant.
Katan looks quick with a good first touch and could be useful at free kicks.
Thought they worked there goal well although I didn't think Anton failed their man for free kick that led to it.
Ref. gave Marlons marker a free kick every time they got near each other. I was frustratrd in the crowd, hat off to Marlon for coping so well.
All in all, excellent second half, average first and a deserved win. I know AP keeps saying look up the table not down but for me I'm just happy we're now 12 point from 18th place.

They shut the gate and wouldn't let anyone else in. Had to get a load of cans and drink 'em on the street which was a giggle in the end.

aye!
we tried and failed to get into the cap n gown, so in the end, standing in the sun , drinkng beers and generally ruling the manor was a pretty good back up.....
couple of post post match thoughts-having seen the match on tv again...how the **** did matty miss that chance at the beginning.....i had a poor view cos i was low down, but i said straight away he shouldve done alot better...ffs it was an open goal and he managed to actually boot the ball away from the goall....you gotta laugh at that---!
the pen was pen whatever the veeeela might say....
its shame they didnt show that breakaway chance we had in the second half that was ruled offside--i think we had about a 4-1 advanatge before the lino flagged(in error!?)
the officlas were RUBBISH yesterday(apart from the pen decison!)....to both sides...really petulant, got it all wrong all over--it wasnt a dirty match , biut there was loads of mini falreups, all down to the man in the middle not getting hold of it...
support was terriffic--i know we always say this, and we were a b it quiet in the first half, but to hear the songs echoing around the away end and side---id have loved to hear it from the other end!
and finally fin ally, ive said it once and ill say it again--if you want a prime example of how pathetic that EASy EASy chant is--look at yesterday, a bunch of muggy school kids suddenly realised they had a team to support, and for ten minutes they are giving it all that.....and when we came back at them all they can do is sit on their hands
so, PLEASE West Ham--leave the "easy easy" to muggy northern monkey rentacrowds....lets show some class !!!

On the commentary it said that NRC was given OFFSIDE in his OWN half, for feks sake!!! Where do they get them from!w4hammer wrote: its shame they didnt show that breakaway chance we had in the second half that was ruled offside--i think we had about a 4-1 advanatge before the lino flagged(in error!?)

exactly my point---from what i could see, the lino just panicked and flagged----how can he flag when theres three or four players running into and open space, in their own half(or what appeared to be!)...like i said, really poor officialdom yesterday

We were superb yesterday. Bit lacklustre 1st half, but so were Villa, but Villa just couldn't contain us for the first 20 mins of the 2nd half. Whatever Pardew and Grant said must have worked wonders.
Carroll - 8 - Always solid and not much chance with the goal. Made a vital stop at 1-1
Konchesky - 8 - Him and Etherington have a very good partnership developing on the left. Overlaps well and delivers the ball well (especially for the goal)
Anton - 7.5 - Good performance again from Anton. Couple of shaky moments but is to be expected with such a young CB
Gabbidon - 9 - MOTM. Best player on the pitch. Won everything in the air and calm and assured on the deck. Gabbs and Anton are developing a formidible partnership and already look on the same wavelength.
Super Tommy Repka - 8 - Should have taken the penalty . Another good performance by him and much appreciated by the travelling faithful. Will be sorely missed by me as this is the last time I will see him play
Etherington - 8 - Starting to develop into a Premiership winger. His and Konch's pace on the left was scaring the crap out of the Villa defence, especially Delaney at RB who I thought would have been a good buy for us
Mullins - 8.5 - Solid in the tackle and good distribution. Kept it nice and simple in the holding role. Back to his early season best hopefully.
Reo-Coker - 6 - Disappointed with him after the Chelsea performance. Looked tired even in the first half which takes a lot away from his game. Hopefully just a blip as he is vital to us
Newton - 8 - Did little first half but awesome in the 2nd. Ran Samuel ragged. A superb signing by Pardew. A player who gives 110% and has some abilty. Must admit, doubted he'd be any use this year in the Prem, but if he can keep up those kind of performances is a good Prem squad player
Zamora - 8 - Some good movement and touches on the ball. Took his goal well. We look much better with Zamora playing up top and Harewood behind him. Can't see Teddy getting back in the team at the moment
Harewood - 8.5 - How anyone calls him lazy I'll never know. Ran his socks off and had the Villa back 4 in trouble all day. Skill, power and pace, a bit more nouse and he'd be a guaranteed 15-20 goal a season forward.
Subs;
Benayoun (for Newton) - 7 - Looked good. Shame wasn't given longer on the right up against Samuel.
Katan (for Zamora) - 7 - A pleasing debut. Nice touch and quite skilful. Another coup by Pardew maybe?
Dailly (for Etherington) - 7 - Groans when he came on about us shutting the game down, but was the right move by Pards. Him and Mullins broke everything up and allowed Katan, Reo-Coker and benayoun to hit Villa on the break. A very good DM, just not a RB and deintiely not a CB
Pardew - 9 - Just for the performance after half time. Whatever he said, more of that please Pards. Also bringing on Dailly was the right decision. Keep it up Pards!! :niceone:
Travelling support - 9 - Bit quite 1st half but the game was dire. 2nd half though were superb, especially round me at the back of the Doug/North stand corner, but a big :doff: to all 4,000 travelling Irons, unbelievable numbers and in good voice

Definitely in our half when ball was kicked so no question of offside.

Was round that area to in the corner bit. RR seat 308, was going mental most of it. Had to sit down for a bit near the end due to near fainting  .hadleighhammer wrote:We were superb yesterday.
