David Gold confident Robert Green will stay after promotion West Ham's joint-chairman David Gold believes goalkeeper Robert Green will stay at Upton Park after the club gained promotion to the Premier League.
The England international performed well in West Ham's 2-1 play-off final victory over Blackpool at Wembley. Continue reading the main story
“There was no way we could keep Robert in the Championship in the second year after relegation by paying him his value”
David Gold West Ham joint-chairman
The 32-year-old's contract expires this summer, but Gold wants to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
"One of the first negotiations that will take place will be with Robert Green," he told BBC Sportsday.
"He is a world-class goalkeeper and his salary would be commensurate with that, but now that we are in the Premier League we can sit down with him.
"I am confident that we can keep Robert."
Despite spending a season in the Championship, Green received a Euro 2012 call-up from England manager Roy Hodgson.
He will travel to Poland and Ukraine as Hodgson's number two keeper, behind Manchester City's Joe Hart.
Gold said promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt was incredibly important.
"There was no way we could keep Robert in the Championship in the second year after relegation by paying him his value," he said.
Gold, who took control of West Ham in January 2010 with business partner David Sullivan, says the club will reassess the squad over the summer after securing top-flight football, with new arrivals likely.
He said: "Some negotiations will start straight away and some will start in a few weeks. Robert Green 2011-12

"Until all those things have been sorted out you're not quite sure what you will be doing, but you know you have to strengthen your squad to give you the best possible chance of staying in the division.
"Once we've done all our negotiations with the players you want to keep, Sam (Allardyce) will come to us and tell us the areas we are weak in and need to strengthen, and this is what it's going to cost us.
"A lot of contracts will be with players that go back onto Premier League wages now we have gone upcome on greeno sign it

If comes in for him he'll be off. In fact I think he'll be off anyway, someone will take him on a free and pay him the big bucks.

Let's hope we can get it done, first important bit of business in the transfer window is to get Greeno signed up.

I love Green and could by getting him to sign a new contract could be our most important signing of the summer.
If he goes I can't see how we would get a keeper of the same calibre.

I hope England's Number Six signs up for a few more years yet. Easily the best keeper we have had since Ludo.

Securing his services has to be a major priority (understatement). He's always stressed he and his family are settled and guess as he's technically on a free he would only go for money. Aside from Spurs where Friedel, who I rate highly but is on his last knockings, its difficult to identify a PL club in desperate need of a keeper. Craig Gordon also currently available on a free.

I thought his red card was rescinded?
Does it still stay on his record?

Sign up Greeno at Peterborough was the highlight of my season.
I'm still not convinced he is going to stay, but Gold saying he is confident is the most positive thing I have heard yet. I hope he retires a Hammer.

I was convinced during the post match celebrations in the ground that he was going. He seemed to be saying goodbye and seemed quite sad. Was walking round on his own and acknowledging fans on his own, so really wouldnt be surprised if he left.
Hope he stays, but if he leaves I'll hold no grudge, been a great servant for west ham over the last few years.

This To me his body language hasn't been the same for a little while now. I hope Sam can persuade the board that they need to do what is required to get him to sign. I don't think it's all about money with Green. He needs to be rewarded for his contribution to this club and made to feel he is one of the top players not one of the squad. He has had to sit and watch a succession of players come and go and be rewarded at a significantly higher rate. (Maybe he needs to change his agent )

If Greeno goes it will be a blow - I hope he signs but wouldn't be surprised if that was that. Keeping them crossed.
