David Di Michele

Postby steveyrockstar on Sun Jun 10, 2012 6:48 pm

was just looking up the top goalscorers for Serie A last year and very surprised to discover that our former 'cult legend' David Di Michele hit a very impressive 12 goals in 29 apps for Lecce last year.

He's pushing 36 now and he couldn't hit a barndoor for us (bar a couple of suspiciously jammy efforts against newcastle)

top bloke and sort of fun(ish) to watch though. I do love the Italians we get at West Ham

I thought both him and Franco were decent strikers we did well to get at a time we were absolutely skint.

I was at Upton Park for that Newcastle game you refer to and Di Michele looked pretty lively, I think it was Zola's first game in charge as well?

May not of scored many, but very good at linking up play, hence played a big part in the classic goal at Wigan
scored by Carlton Cole.

I follow Lecce, about 5 or 6 were penalties  but still good nevertheless in a relegated side

We'd do well to get someone in over the summer who can get as much out of Cole as Di Michele did, to give us a real option in a 4-4-2 formation.

You worried me. I thought he was coming back. He had some moments of magic but also some very poor moments so a bit inconsistent really.

Aside from the sublime link up play for Cole's goal against Wigan I also remember the game against Hull at the Boleyn where he tore them a new hole (ok it was Hull but still).

Franco was one of our best strikers the last decade, even if he was past his prime, as they usually are when they sign for us.
He was slow and old, but had great vision and positioning.

He should've played a few seasons with Ashton.... :|

DDM was proper hit and miss but he linked up reasonably well with Cole, he did better than I thought he would.

Performed one of the most ridiculous dives I've ever saw (vs Liverpool), one of the most excruciatingly embarrassing moments I've had as a West Ham fan, made me cringe, laugh and fume all at once.

Like others have said he was good and rubbish at the same time, surprised he's still playing at that level as I thought he was getting on a bit when we signed him.

Anyone remember that pass against the Gooners where he fell on the floor and then overhead kicked it 5 yards or so to the wing?

If only we'd signed him a couple years earlier, the bloke had a lot of class and passion as well as being hard as nails. He could of ended up being a cult hero if he'd spent abit more time here.

The two goals against Newcastle kind of sum him up, one great, one mental.

Helped of course by some comedy defending from Sideshow Bob.

The one he messed up would of been world class if he meant it, was such a crap attempt at kick even the defence and goalkeeper tried to block the non existent shot.

You could see the brain was there but the legs were completely gone. He seemed to beat the offside trap every game but strolling defenders would just cruise up to him and pinch the ball back. IIRC he spent the rest of the time hovering around waiting for a defender to make a howler. He made an impression anyway.
