Alternative To Penalty Shoot Out - Whoever Scored First Win

Postby Iron Works on Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:45 pm

So at the end of extra-time if it's still a draw then whoever scored first in the match wins.

Not sure if this will turn the game defensive or not.

I've had a few drinks so if I'm chatting rubbish then please tell me and excuse me

Always thought that reducing the amount of players on the pitch would work. Still a draw after 120 mins, teams have to take off 3 players each, which still makes it a game of tactics, skill and stamina. If still a draw after 15 minutes, another 2 players get taken off. Pretty sure there would be a deciding goal soon. You might have to have a spare ref lined up though.

Penalties are very dramatic, but a cruel way to lose a game.

If no team has scored first they'll have a penalty shoot out .

How about a penalty shoot-out after 90 minutes but before extra time? It would force the losing team (if there was one) to attack in extra time as opposed to both teams defending as we have now.

If it was still a draw after extra draw I have no idea what you'd do though - another penalty shoot-out?

So playing 6 a side on a huge pitch and having the remaining 6 players drive themselves into the ground physically and turn the entire match into a sham isn't cruel?

The only sensible non-penalty is to replaty the match.

"but what if that isn't possible?"

if the Earth exists and days follow on from one another, it is possible.

How about direct free kicks or corner 'shoot out'. Played at one end, one team attacks, one defends, with a certain number of players (maybe 3 or 4) allowed per team.

Teams swap over from defence to attack if the ball goes out of play or over half way line. Could be made to work well by setting the ratio of attackers to defenders. Makes it more team oreintated than penaltys.

The only alternative I've ever thought a decent alternative to penalties is something like they do in Ice Hockey

That is, start with the ball/puck on the half way line, then it's one-on-one between you and the 'keeper. You're allowed as many touches as you like. You can shoot from the halfway line if you want, or dribble it all the way up to, and around the 'keeper, or anything between. You can't take the ball backwards. As soon as the goalie gets a touch, the attacker can't touch the ball again. If it hits the woodwork, or goes behind, the ball is dead. There is a 30 second time limit

Seems, if anything, a fairer way of doing it, as it relies more on skill, and less on chance. Maybe in football the halfway line would be too far back to start, so maybe start somewhere between the halfway line and the edge of the penalty area

I don't like any of the other alternatives. I thought the Golden Goal was a shyte way to decide a match, and kind of against the way football is played. The thought of removing players just seems like games would end up in a farce, and again it seems against the spirit of the game. I'm not a massive fan of penalty shoot outs, but it seems a better solution than most

It would end up turning into a Power League game on a full sized pitch.

Remove half the players, but reduce the pitch and the goals to half the size and play rush goalie. First one to be more than two in front wins, but you can only score volleys and you can't score from inside the area unless it's a header.

What? It's no more ludicrous than some of the other suggestions. :)

I like the penalty shootout before extra time, but it runs the risk of the team who won the shootout defending for the whole of extra time.

There is only one fair way --- British bulldog, start with the ref, linesmen and the two managers in the middle.

Trouble is, whatever replaces the penalty shootout will be just as intense and heartbreaking. Keep it the same,
