Have we ever beaten anyone in the top 5 though? How can you be 2nd in the rankings if you always lose to the other big teams?! Seems an odd system to me.

FIFA doesn't rank teams on who they beat its the amount of games won, drawn or lost regardless of opponent. They're probably just as shocked as we are when they tally the points.

Really? I can't see that being right. You're telling me you'd get just as many World Ranking points for beating Wales as you would for beating Germany? Absolutely awful system if that is the case

Its all based off the difficulty of your opponent, the status of the match (you get more for World Cup than for a friendly), the result of the match and the strength of the region (I believe Europe are top along with South America though i haven't looked recently). They take into account matches within the last 4 years but they go down in points the further back they are.

Therefore England are high because Europes a difficult region and we do quite well in qualifying. Still doesn't feel right to be that high though
