If so it's *got* to be Carroll and Zarate to start for me. Bring Cole on later imho if need be.
Kouyate has been under par recently but I am relieved to see him back - we'll need that against the pace and power of Newcastle - and we really need Downing's ability to press their defence and make the killer pass.

So taking into account the injury update from Sam;

Adrian

Jenko Collins. Tomkins. Cress

Kouyate.

Amilfatano Noble or Nolan

Downing

Zarate. Carroll

Hopefully Valencia or Sakho might make bench and be able to play 20 mins if necessary

Sam said Kouyate and Downing back and Noble has a chance.

I would go with :

------------------------------------------Adrian------------------

Jenks------------------Tomka--------------Collins-------------- Cresswell

--------------------------------------------Noble / Nolan--------------------------

------------Amalfitano--------------------------------Kouyate

--------------------------------------Downing---------------------------

----------------------Zarate-----------------Carroll

Subs : Jarvis, Cole, Job, Demel, Jussi, Vaz Te,

Edit : Go on then I will shape it properly like a Diamond :D

If those mentioned above are back fit, but not the others, I would set up with:-

-----------------------------------Adrian---------------------------------
Jenkinson----------Collins--------Tomkins-------------Cresswell
------------------------------Nolan----------------------------------------
---------Amalfitano------------------------Kouyate-------------------
----------------------------Downing-------------------------------------
-----------------Zarate-----------------Carroll-------------------------

From what I've seen Kouyate has not yet shown attacking qualities. He was impressive in his first couple of games when bursting out of defence, but looked lost when played further forward with Noble and Song behind him. That may have been coincidental, with his match fitness being suspect for the latter games, but we may find he is best staring as the deepest midfielder

He's got the legs to keep pressing the opposition high up the pitch for long periods. Nolan doesn't. If Noble is fit then he would obviously sit in, but unlike others I do not see Kouyate as our deepest midfielder. His energy and physical presence all over the pitch is wasted in that position.

I'd have all 3 starting especially if Nobes misses out

Back five picks itself.
Downing - Noble – Kouyate - Jarvis
(Downing and Jarvis best wide players to fill in when full backs attack)
Nolan behind Andy. (remember how well they can play together)
Probably get a few Collins punts but surely this is how Sam would have set up last season if he had the players available.
This leaves Cole, Zarate and Amalfitano to come on if needed, (all three have scored as subs this season).
Plus let’s get Burke on the bench.
Bit too route one for my liking, but I think this is this best way to get the win to set us up for some very winnable games in December.

There are no central line trains between Woodford and Epping this weekend, in case that affects any of your journeys.

I'd go for Carroll and Zarate up top.

Kouyate, Amalfitano, Downing and Noble (if fit) in midfield.

The back 4 picks itself with Reid suspended.

I feel like we owe Newcastle a beating by a couple of goals - I'm going for 3-1 to the Irons.

Perhaps if it was supported by the likes of Matt Taylor etc.

I don't it's fair to say that now we have the likes of a re-invented Downing/Kouyate/Amalfitano/Song/Valencia/Sakho buzzing around them.

Back 4 picks. Itself.
I don't know I felt Jarvis and Cresswell kind of got in each others way on the left.
I would play.

Kouyate
Jarvis. Amalfitano
Downing

Zarate. Carroll

Just not Vaz Te, he will get in Zarate's space.

I would rather Jarvis replaced with Nolan, definitely not physical enough for me. I think Jarvis' time is up, would like to be surprised, but I can't see it myself.

I'd go the other way around myself... If we needed to change a game then Zarate would make a much better impact.

Zarate deserves a start more than Cole does though, I just like to see a bench that has players on who can change the game (if needed).

I don't think either Zarate or Cole can last 90mins.

Looking forward to the 4 hour or so round trip for me
b*llocks, thanks for the heads up. I'm at my girlfriends Friday night and need to get back to Basingstoke promptly on Saturday, might have to go via reading now

I think Sam will drop the diamond.

Jarvis and Carlton would be the pre-planned subs at 60-70 minutes.

I've never understood how you can pre plan subs?? Surely it depends on how the game is panning out and how people are performing??

They almost all freshen up the front 6 at 60-70 these days.

The logic is that someone who has already been running for 60 minutes isn't going be as sharp as someone who has been fully rested.

I've lost count of the number of times we've dropped points/lost games because we couldn't make those changes in recent years.
