Fyodor Smolov

Postby DasNutNock on Fri Mar 30, 2018 9:11 am

Couldn’t find a thread, but seems to be lots in the papers & sports news suggesting we’re going to get him before the end of the season. Can that even work if he’s not a free agent? Scoring for fun in Russia and 3 goals in his last 2 internationals vs Spain & France suggest positive things, but still a bit of a gamble at £15M, surely?

Less of a gamble than Calleri and an injury ravaged Andy Carroll

All the reports I looked at mentioned signing him before the World Cup, rather than before the end of the season.

I'll only believe it when it happens, either way.

More likely that little Jack was sent to Greggs to buy a small loaf.

So a new approach with a DOF has been promised. Yet we are being linked to yet another striker before we know which division we are in or who is going to be the manager.

So we've gone from snatching Neymar jr. from under the nose of Barcelona, to bringing Smolov in before the pre-season beings.

More realistic, still meh.

The transfer window is 17 May - 9 August this year.

No way. Before he joined his Krasnodar I think he scored 4 from 77 at Dinamo and 1 from 14 at Feyenoord. Also 24 assists in 248 screams of a goal hanger with no ball skills. Apart from which Russian players invariably flop in the PL.

Not the sort of player we need and too risky which would make him an ideal Sully purchase

On first glance, he does appear to be the staggeringly short sighted, inappropriate dogshit type of signing that Sullivan would go for.

Wrong age; wrong background; wrong reasons for joining; wrong position. Ticks just about every box.

All moot if we go down anyway. Hernandez' replacement if we don't (much lower wages = bigger profits).

Sort of player that if we sign, we will turn him ****, but if someone else in premier league signs him, i.e. Swansea or southampton, he will score 15 league goals and everyone will bang on why we were to thrifty to sign him

No win scenario

Doubt it.

The list of former Soviet Union footballers that have come to England and succeeded is a pretty short one, irrespective of the club.

Arshavin, Shevchenko, Vorinin, Luzhny, Rebrov, Bilyletdinhov have all failed to adapt at what would be called "big" clubs, or Everton.

Isn’t this the same Smolov that turned us down in the January window?

Didn’t Tony Henry say that players from Russia struggled to settle in this country ?

So one presumes if Sully is trying to distance himself from what Henry said, just in case anyone might think their views were in my way mutual you understand, I am fully expecting a team of 35 year old Africans to turn up in May with Sully proudly slapping our new DofF on the back while exclaiming how easy his job is.
