Zola triple sure to strike Cham
West Ham are poised to sign Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh - after offering to treble his salary.
The Morocco international's agents held talks with Upton Park officials in London on Friday. And Chamakh has been won over by the offer of a contract until 2013 - plus a wage of £2.6million a year after tax.
Bordeaux have accepted West Ham's £7m bid for the 25-year-old, who would be a free agent next year.
Chamakh had hoped for a move to Arsenal, but is now ready to join Gianfranco Zola's side.
"I have crossed Arsenal option off my list," he said.
Hammers boss Zola is desperate to land Chamakh despite bringing in frontman Alessandro Diamanti.
Zola said: "Chamakh is a player we're interested in. We're trying everything we can."

Police and West Ham were unprepared for the riots at Upton Park
Michael Calvin covers all angles in football's hooligan debate. He spent two weeks monitoring preparations for the Carling Cup tie between West Ham and Millwall. He was on the streets, shared the fears of the travelling fans and saw the violence spread to the stadium. He asks questions of the police and puts into ominous perspective the challenge facing the FA.
It only takes one knife, one piece of pond life fuelled by beer, bile and the bravado of the brain dead.
Football is closer than it dare admit to the nightmare scenario of a player being stabbed on duty.
That thought crossed the mind of several Millwall players during the repeated pitch invasions at Upton Park. Privately, they admit to being scared. They're good pros, family men who've closed ranks.
If any had responded to the taunts they endured, the kneejerk inquests into the return of football hooliganism would have had a sinister urgency.
The FA has a duty to act on their behalf, to look beyond banning orders for the adrenaline-crazed kids and middle-aged buffoons who broke through an inadequate security cordon.
West Ham United and the Metropolitan Police are trying to promote the myth they did all they could to stop trouble.
To declare an interest, I was in and around Upton Park researching a book on Millwall. A perfect storm of arrogance, complacency and incompetence, broke around me. It was no surprise to anyone who had read the obscene, racist and barely literate ramblings of the online chat rooms. The talk there was of flashpoints along unpoliced tube lines, of "old faces, out in force".
Desperados from Rangers and Celtic pledged to fight for Millwall and West Ham, respectively.
Millwall believe Ken Chapman, their widely respected security advisor, was not fully consulted during the planning process. Over the last 18 years he has built up an extensive intelligence network.
Chief Supt Steve Wisbey, in his first season as match commander at Upton Park, gave more weight to the advice of Louisa Elliston, a bureaucrat from the Football Licensing Authority.
Touts, inevitably, profited from their decision to limit Millwall's allocation. They sold Carling Cup tickets, including laser-printed fakes, at Millwall's match at Southend on August 21.
The home fans made The Queens pub, south of Upton Park station, the epicentre of the trouble. Incredibly, alcohol was freely available, both inside and outside the ground.
A chant of "let's go f****g mental", from West Ham fans corralled behind a wire mesh fence adjoining the pub, was the signal for a barrage of bricks, bottles, and beer cans.
A group of older West Ham fans, clustered outside a chicken shop on the opposite side of the road, were directing operations on what appeared to be shortwave radios.
One officer was hit by a vodka bottle, thrown at point-blank range. He was rescued by mounted colleagues, chasing a third gang of West Ham fans away from side streets which had the air of death traps.
The hooligans who do enduring damage to Millwall's reputation were on their way. Finding no police at East Ham tube station, they smashed the windscreen of a passing car and dragged the occupants, an Asian couple, out on to the road.
The decent majority of Millwall fans were unprotected as they walked to the game, down Tudor Road, and through an alleyway to Priory Road, behind the ground.
It was here a season-ticket holder was separated from his family of 10, and stabbed.
An innocent victim in the wrong place at the wrong time.
As his life was being saved by a paramedic, a gang of West Ham fans, armed with bottles, launched another ambush.
It was not until just before kickoff that riot police were deployed around the away turnstiles. Inside the ground, the atmosphere was feral.
Gianluca Nani, West Ham's director of football, urged those around him in the directors box to get to their feet when home fans sang "stand up if you hate Millwall".
Scott Duxbury, West Ham's chief executive, wrote to Millwall, apologising for Nani's crassness, without altering the impression of a rudderless club.
The sight of West Ham fans attacking their own stewards, who turn up for pin money, was shameful.
I cannot see a logical reason to punish Millwall, but, at the very least, West Ham must play their next home Cup match behind closed doors.
This would penalise Gianfranco Zola's players. But let's pause for thought.
One day they too may find themselves in a pitch invasion, wondering if football's luck is about to run out.
10 questions that MUST be answered
1) Why were so few police deployed on the tube network?
2) Why were side streets inadequately policed?
3) Why was Ken Chapman, Millwall's Security Advisor, marginalised in the planning process?
4) Why was alcohol so freely available?
5) Will the FA charge Gianluca Nani with bringing the game into disrepute?
6) Will Junior Stanislas answer incitement charges for his goal celebrations?
7) Why did the Sports Minister fail to intervene, after being given five days notice of concerns over ticket allocations?
8) Is the Football Licensing Authority, a government quango that costs £1.3m per year, fit for purpose?
9) Does West Ham have a recurring hooligan problem?
10) Did violence follow West Ham's recent home games against Tottenham and Napoli?

ARSENAL
WHAT THEY NEED:
A solid start supports Arsene Wenger's argument his squad did not need bolstering that much this summer.
The supposed need for a new striker is not so pressing given the goals are being spread around. But they could still do with an extra centre-half - and a spare midfielder given the frequency with which Cesc Fabregas picks up niggling injuries.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £20m
KEY TARGETS: Brede Hangeland (Fulham), Blaise Maltuidi (St Etienne).
ASTON VILLA
WHAT THEY NEED: The retirement of Martin Laursen and the departure of Zat Knight has left Villa boss Martin O'Neill desperately short in defence. He looks certain to add a centre-back to his squad but the arrival of Stephen Warnock should mean Nicky Shorey is on his way.
O'Neill remains a firm admirer of Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £20m
KEY TARGETS: Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham) Richard Dunne (Man City)
BIRMINGHAM CITY
WHAT THEY NEED: The Blues have plenty of experience in the squad but Alex McLeish admits he has already spent well above his budget for the season.
He needs more quality and experience in the centre of defence and a finisher up front. McLeish is relying on Christian Benitez adapting quickly to the Premier League or Kevin Phillips proving he is still a top-flight striker.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £7m
KEY TARGETS: Michel (Sporting Gijon).
BLACKBURN ROVERS
WHAT THEY NEED: Wheeler-dealer Sam Allardyce lost a creative spark when Tugay retired, so he could do with more midfield inspiration.
Roque Santa Cruz's replacement, Nikola Kalinic, misfired in his first outings. The arrival of Pascal Chimbonda will not be enough to satisfy the fans hungry a major signing. Big Sam also needs a target man.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £10m
KEY TARGET: Hassan Yebda (Benfica).
BOLTON WANDERERS
WHAT THEY NEED: Gary Megson's side have been woeful up front and need to find a goalscorer quickly or Bolton supporters face a torrid season.
Johan Elmander, a club record £8.2million signing from Toulouse has been shocking this season and fellow striker Kevin Davies needs a natural finisher alongside him before the transfer window closes.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £5m
KEY TARGETS: Kevin Nolan (Newcastle, loan), Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen).
BURNLEY
WHAT THEY NEED: Premier League expertise in the middle of the park is high on Owen Coyle's list and he would jump at the chance of taking Newcastle's Nicky Butt if he became available. Another striker with proven experience in the top flight is also on the wanted list. Coyle is also in the market for a solid back-up to keeper Brian Jensen.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £5m
KEY TARGETS: Nicky Butt (Newcastle), Owen Garvan (Ipswich).
CHELSEA
WHAT THEY NEED: The impact of the African Cup of Nations is the Blues' biggest concern. They could be without Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel, Didier Drogba and Saloman Kalou going into the busy Christmas and New Year period.
Andriy Shevchenko's Chelsea days are all but over so finding suitable striking back-up is the priority.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £40m
KEY TARGETS: Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich), Alex Pato (AC Milan).
EVERTON
WHAT THEY NEED: The exit of Joleon Lescott means David Moyes' immediate priority has been securing a deal for Sylvain Distin. He's also been hunting for right-backs having missed out on Kyle Naughton earlier in the summer.
The imminent return of Yakubu and Mikel Arteta will have a big impact on the depth of his squad.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £15m
KEY TARGETS: Scott Brown (Celtic), Ever Banega (Valencia).
FULHAM
WHAT THEY NEED: The injury to Andy Johnson has heaped more pressure on a team that looked like it was always going to struggle for goals.
Another forward would be great for the Cottagers but that's easier said than done.
Boss Roy Hodgson also needs midfield cover if Damien Duff and Clint Dempsey get injured.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £10m
KEY TARGETS: Marouane Chamakh (Bordeaux), Gary O'Neil (Middlesbrough).
HULL CITY
WHAT THEY NEED: If Michael Turner heads to Sunderland, then a move for Anton Ferdinand - the player he would be challenging for a place at the Stadium of Light - might not be a bad shout.
Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford would be a pretty good addition to a squad that will benefit from Jimmy Bullard's return.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £6m
KEY TARGETS: Matty Fryatt (Leicester), James Harper (Reading).
LIVERPOOL
WHAT THEY NEED: Rafa Benitez has holes across his squad. He's short of striking cover for Fernando Torres, and the annual search for a left-winger hasn't produced competition for the strangely anonymous Albert Riera.
Valencia's David Silva would be the solution - if Benitez can convince the American owners to go another £20million into debt.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: Nil
KEY TARGET: David Silva (Valencia).
MANCHESTER CITY
WHAT THEY NEED: Right-back is a problem position, with Mark Hughes convinced that Micah Richards is too vulnerable defensively.
City's manager is still looking for a defensive midfielder, possibly Yaya Toure (right) at Barcelona, but it may have to wait until the January transfer window before they have another go for him.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: ££££
KEY TARGETS: Hughes has said the spending is over for now.
MANCHESTER UNITED
WHAT THEY NEED: Defensive cover for Rio Ferdinand, who is increasingly injury prone.
Jonny Evans, though talented, does not yet have the experience to be consistent throughout a season.
Also, despite last weekend's five-goal haul at Wigan, they still need a creator alongside Wayne Rooney. David Silva is too expensive but Spurs' Luka Modric is being considered.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £40m
KEY TARGET: Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich).
PORTSMOUTH
WHAT THEY NEED: Where to start? Pompey have lost Sol Cambell and Sylvain Distin, so defensive cover is a must. At the other end, the club did capture Watford's Tommy Smith but they still need much more in every position.
Time is against them so a spate of loan signings to follow Frederic Piquionne is in order.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £10m
KEY TARGETS: Nyron Nosworthy, (S'land), Mike Williamson (Watford).
STOKE CITY
WHAT THEY NEED: Tony Pulis has already signed Robert Huth to beef up his backline, but the Stoke boss may still go for another central defender.
Tuncay followed Huth from Middlesbrough to add pace to the hard-working front duo of James Beattie and Ricardo Fuller.
Look out for a late bid for Portsmouth's David Nugent.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £10m
KEY TARGETS: David Nugent (Portsmouth), Lomana LuaLua (Al-Arabi).
SUNDERLAND
WHAT THEY NEED: Another central defender who can command at the heart of his side would suit boss Steve Bruce and Hull's Michael Turner tops his wishlist.
Bruce still needs someone on the right side of midfield, with Egyptian 21-year-old Ahmed Al- Muhammadi - dubbed 'Ronaldo of the Middle East' - the likely target.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £15m
KEY TARGETS: Peter Lovenkrands (free agent), Titus Bramble (Wigan).
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
WHAT THEY NEED: Boss Harry Redknapp is fairly satisfied with his squad and no wonder after their flying start.
But if Roman Pavlyuchenko is sold, they need a new striker to maintain a top-class four-pronged frontline.
With the injury to Heurelho Gomes, Harry needs another keeper, even if it has to be on loan.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £25m
KEY TARGETS: Ashley Young (A Villa), Ricardo Quaresma (Inter Milan).
WEST HAM
WHAT THEY NEED: Alessandro Diamanti signed from Italian club Livorno on Friday on a five-year deal, bolstering a very thin strike force.
His goals last season, including six in the last 10 matches, helped his side to promotion. Marouane Chamakh is a target but boss Gianfranco Zola has to sell as well.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £5m
KEY TARGETS: Eidur Gudjohnsen (Barcelona), Mario Balotelli (Inter Milan).
WIGAN
WHAT THEY NEED: Roberto Martinez's side have shipped nine goals in their last two games but the boss's biggest headache does not lie in defence.
The Spaniard desperately needs a creative midfielder before deadline day.
A decent strike partner for Colombian star Hugo Rodallega would also be a huge bonus to the Wigan faithful.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £5m
WOLVES
WHAT THEY NEED: While Mick McCarthy's starting XI are capable of surviving in the Premier League, he is desperately short of cover.
The Wolves boss needs another centre-half and a forward for when Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is injured. He could also do with Michael Kightly fully fit. Signings are likely to be on loan.
LEFT IN THE KITTY: £5m
KEY TARGETS: Craig Gardner (Aston Villa), Brian Stock (Doncaster).
KEY TARGETS: Ferrie Bodde (Swansea), Victor Moses (Crystal Palace).

Re: Modric
I can't really say I'm pleased that he's broken his leg. Horrible for a footballer. I haven't been able to play for a year because of an ankle injury, and I'm just starting to come back. In a way, it means Spurs have lost their best player, and hopefully they'll come tumbling down the table.
I hope Modric does recover 100% when he he's back though.

10 questions that MUST be answered
1) Why were so few police deployed on the tube network?
That is a question for the police.
2) Why were side streets inadequately policed?
See Q1.
3) Why was Ken Chapman, Millwall's Security Advisor, marginalised in the planning process?
Perhaps because the game was played at Upton Park, and not the den.
4) Why was alcohol so freely available?
Because alcohol is a legal product that can be sold in shops and other licenced premises in the UK.
5) Will the FA charge Gianluca Nani with bringing the game into disrepute?
As said previously, if this is true I am delighted he is showing support.
6) Will Junior Stanislas answer incitement charges for his goal celebrations?
Certainly. How dare a 19 year old lad celebrate a 87th minute equaliser that kept his side in the cup against their main rivals.
7) Why did the Sports Minister fail to intervene, after being given five days notice of concerns over ticket allocations?
Again, why don't you write to him?
8) Is the Football Licensing Authority, a government quango that costs £1.3m per year, fit for purpose?
Probably not.
9) Does West Ham have a recurring hooligan problem?
Not to the extent that it deserves singling out from other clubs, in particular Millwall.
10) Did violence follow West Ham's recent home games against T*ttenham and Napoli?
No.
this journalist's hopeless generalisations and clear anti-West Ham bias render his "research" unfit for purpose.
