Robbie is put on ice

WEST HAM are using an ice chamber to speed the recovery of striker Robbie Keane from a calf injury.

Team-mate Jack Collison has also been using the chamber as he recovers from knee surgery.

Midfielder Collison said: "Robbie and I had to sit in the chamber at minus 140 degrees for five minutes at a time.

"We had to share the chamber with boxer Frank Bruno. It was great to meet him but he made us look really weak as he was in there doing all kinds of exercises while Robbie and I just sat there trying to keep warm."

West Ham boss Avram Grant hopes to have Keane, 30, on loan from Spurs, back next month.

Hitzlsperger and team bonding can keep Hammers up, says Carlton Cole

Carlton Cole believes that Thomas Hitzlsperger will be a vital asset in West Ham's bid for survival.

After six months out through injury, Hitzlsperger finally made his Hammers debut on Monday night at Upton Park where he smashed home a 25-yard thunderbolt to set the club on their way to a 5-1 win over Burnley.

Hitzlsperger was quick to play down his big impact, declaring that he should not be viewed as West Ham's "saviour".

But Cole, who knows Hitzlsperger well after spending a season with him at Aston Villa, thinks the German's introduction will help add an extra dimension to the Hammers' midfield that will prove vital in the crucial last quarter.

"It's fantastic that he's back. He's a great player," Cole told West Ham TV Online.

"He shows what he can do in training and he's going to be a massive asset for us.

"We've missed that. We always rely on Mark Noble, (Radoslav) Kovac and obviously Scotty Parker, but now they've got a bit of support as well from a talented football player and hopefully he can continue his form.

"He scored a cracking goal to set us off and that's what we all needed."

Cole thinks last week's team-bonding session, which saw the squad take part in clay-pigeon shooting and go-karting in Newmarket, has worked wonders.

"It was well publicised that the boys went out last week to get a bit of team spirit and I think Burnley showed what we are really about," the striker said.

"I am happy for the boys, happy for the manager, and happy for the people all connected with West Ham United. We really did do a good job."

Cole was on target twice against the Clarets. His first came when he swung a leg out whilst laying on the floor, the ball somehow finding the net despite the efforts of two covering Burnley defenders.

His second strike - a beautifully curled half-volley - owed nothing to fortune though.

The brace brought his tally to 10 this season, but six of those strikes have come in cup competitions.

Cole concedes that he must start finding the net to help the club move up from their current position of 19th.

"I'm on 10 goals this season but I really want to convert that into the league," the 27-year-old added.

"That's where it counts at the moment. We really want to be a Premier League outfit next season. Everyone really dug in and that's what we need, we need everyone pulling in the same direction.

"Everyone has to play their part this season because this is going to be a massive team effort."

Villa tracking England keeper Green

Gerard Houllier is eyeing West Ham keeper Robert Green to replace Brad Friedel.

American veteran Friedel, 39, is set to leave Aston Villa this summer for the MLS in his homeland, and Houllier is already looking at potential replacements.

England keeper Green is on his radar and West Ham are aware of Villa's interest in their current first-choice keeper.

Green went into the World Cup as England's No.1 keeper, but his notorious blunder against the USA was the worst moment of his career and he has been trying to rebuild his reputation in the months since.

The ex-Norwich keeper's form has improved recently and he has regained his place in Fabio Capello's set-up.

West Ham would want around £6million for Green - and his big-money contract at Upton Park may be another reason for them to sell.

A Fan’s Eulogy on the 18th Anniversary of the Passing of Bobby Moore

I was reminded by an article on KUMB that today (24 February 2011) is the 18th anniversary of the death of Bobby Moore. I well remember that day in February 1993 when the news of his passing broke. The whole nation was united in grief for a footballer who represented everything good about the game. And of course the epi-centre of that grief was Upton Park, which Hammers fans spontaneously transformed in to a memorial to our greatest son, with their flowers, scarves and other tributes.

Bobby Moore was the best defender that we have ever seen, a legendary captain of club and country and a man who was universally respected. On the pitch he led by example, using his uncanny positional sense, and ability to read the game, to anticipate opposition moves, win the ball and launch the counter-attacks. Season after season, from 1967 onwards I witnessed Bobby Moore prove that he was the ultimate exponent of the defensive art, performing brilliantly in what was usually a shaky Hammers rearguard.

Bobby’s defensive abilities are well known, but he was also superb in carrying the ball forward and quickly turning defence in to counter-attack. The best example of that is the 1966 World Cup Final, when after we conceded the first goal to West Germany, he drove England forward and took that quick free kick that found Sir Geoff Hurst’s head for the equaliser. While who can ever forget that legendary fourth goal, when he won the ball and launched that fantastic forward pass for Sir Geoff to run on to and score. Many defenders would have put that ball in to row Z at Wembley, but not the ball playing defender and leader, Bobby Moore.

Personally, I have always believed that Bobby’s leadership and decisive interventions made the single biggest contribution to winning that Final. And no lesser person than Sir Bobby Charlton has said much the same in paying tribute to his captain on that unforgettable July day in 1966.

The national grief on Bobby’s death in 1993 arose naturally because he was genuinely loved and also because he was associated with a much better time in the post-war life of the nation. The victory in the 1966 WC Final is an highlight of the the exciting decade that was the 1960s. But more than that, Bobby Moore become the living embodiment of what is probably this nation’s greatest ever sporting achievement, the lifting of the Jules Rimet trophy.

For those of us lucky enough to have seen the man play, they are cherished memories of a great footballer and captain. After the 1965 ECWC victory, a league title(s) and further glories should have followed for Bobby Moore and the Hammers. Yet, that promise was dashed by the lack of ambition by the club’s board. It is an absolute tragedy that a player of Moore’s class never won a football league title or a European Cup Final with the club.

But that is a discussion for another time. Today we should remember and give thanks that the world’s greatest defender and captain wore the claret and blue of West Ham Utd FC for the vast majority of his golden career. He was the finest product of our youth system, the Academy of English Football, and living proof that the world’s greatest players are not always born, they sometimes make themselves great through reflection and a lot of hard work on the training pitch. And, indeed, that is one of the most remarkable things about Bobby, the way in which through study of the game, dedication and desire he literally transformed himself in to the world’s greatest.

If Avram Grant wants to inspire the squad in anticipation of the struggles that lay ahead, they should take time out at the end of training to watch the TV programme ‘Hero: The Bobby Moore Story.’ Such a viewing will emphasise to each and every one of them why the West Ham No. 6 shirt has been retired and the true greatness of the club’s best ever player. It will convey principle, dedication and the desire to be the best. But more than that, it will underline the importance of commitment, giving 100% in an Hammers shirt, having high personal standards/ethics, sportsmanship and the ultimate value of dedication and leadership.

And it is leadership that West Ham will need in the next few months. The leadership to steer a team through difficult times and secure the necessary victories to achieve safety. Much has changed about the game since Bobby’s day, mostly for the worst, but the imperative to strive, to achieve and win through remains eternal. We need key players like Hitzlsperger and Parker to show that leadership and help save the club from relegation. Indeed, the greatest tribute that the current players can pay to Bobby’s memory is to be strong and try to play themselves to safety with a footballing style akin to that of the former Hammers teams that Bobby led with such distinction.

And we Hammers fans will keep Bobby in our hearts and continue to support his charity, the Bobby Moore Fund to promote research in to treatments for bowl cancer. Bobby Moore never received the knighthood that he deserved, but the work of the charity, that bares his name, is a fanastic tribute to the memory of a great man and a great footballer.

Aussie kid Dylan Tombides told he can be West Ham star

West Ham United's Aussie striker Dylan Tombides has been told he can make it in the Premier League - if he works hard.

Tombides has made exciting progress at West Ham since being spotted at a Hong Kong soccer academy.

Hammers reserves coach Kevin Keen told whufc.com: "We've got to keep his feet on the ground because he is a young lad and he is improving. The timing of his runs and his touch are good and he has a chance of coming through and becoming a West Ham star, but that's only if he keeps his feet on the ground.

"You've got to work hard in any business, not just football, to get to the top and I'm sure that Tony Carr and myself will be able to keep his feet on the ground. He has a long way to go and has two or three years to mature but his movement off the ball is very good."

Cheers CH & Hammer as usual.

Bit somber this morning too tired (shame on me) to remember the anniversary.

I think that the only one to sit all the way through that film (haven't had the pleasure of watching it, I'll google it later) would be Noble and maybe Parker.

The rest would be twittering, on their mobiles and wondering why they couldn't have an early day.

I cant believe G&S will even consider selling Green to Villa or anybody else for that matter...!!!
There's plenty of other players that should be sold, Green is definitely not one of them...!!

Full story: the Sun

We suppose, objectively speaking, the biggest story of the day is the Qatari royal family's renewed £1.5bn bid for Manchester United. But the Rumour Mill is under no contractual obligation to get excited about an accountancy story, or whatever this actually is, so to hell with it.

This is more like it: Marlon Harewood has the total radge on at dropping behind DJ Campbell, James Beattie, Luke Varney and Brett Ormerod in the pecking order at Blackpool. It's hardly a stellar cast, a summit meeting of talent, so it could hardly be more embarrassing for Harewood if he was benched in favour of the Canadian board-treader Neve Campbell, advertising guru Trevor Beattie, deceased sitcom star and first man to use a cashpoint in the UK Reg Varney, and … Ormerod's not a very common surname, is it? Anyway, he wants out, and both Barnsley and Sheffield United are willing to take him on loan.

Yuri Zhirkov is another man who's had enough, and then some: the £18m Chelsea man is fed up with life on the bench, even though he's been injured half the time, and is eyeing a move to CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg. Florent Malouda meanwhile is off to Hercules in a £7m deal, while Jose Bosingwa is leaving for former Italian giants Juventus. Roman Abramovich is either planning a massive splurge in the summer, or he's totally given up.

Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in £20m Lille starlet Eden Hazard. However the £20m Lille starlet isn't the least bit interested in them. The Belgian midfielder has an attitude to England that makes France rugby supremo Marc Lièvremont sound like a character in a Shane Meadows film. "My characteristics correspond more to Spanish football," began one long aural flick of the Vs, heard from all the way across the channel. "This country corresponds to my temperament, the heat and the beautiful stadiums." Pretty categorical, though you can expect this story to be contradicted time and again over the next few months, with money-mad agents, and journalists desirous of filling space, both putting their considerations over those of you, the reader.

Newspaper sales are expected to fall over the next three months. Nobody can work out why.

Charles N'Zogbia wants out at Wigan Athletic. "At the start Wigan was a springboard club for me," he says, not even bothering to hide his contempt for the people who pay his wages. "But I've been here two years and I want to do everything possible to keep the club in the Premier League. I'll finish this season and then look at my future." Well that's nice of you, Charles. Well done! Footballers, eh? To think we stand on the touchline and want these people to do well.

Aston Villa want Robert Green of West Ham United. Gérard Houllier's past goalkeeping purchases include Chris Kirkland, Jerzy Dudek, Pegguy Arphexad, and Safe Hands Sander Westerveld. Just saying.

Arsenal want £15m Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro. Some are worried that, at 5ft 8ins, the hitman will be too slight for the Premier League. But those doing the worrying are clowns. Consider, to pluck one example from the air, the Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric, who carries the weight and has the dimensions of a sheet of A4 paper, and yet manages to be one of the best players in the league, dictating play from the middle of the park. Does everyone have to be a lumbering idiot to get along here? No. Next!

Ah, we could have timed that better. Seems that's it.
