monday's news 23rd jan includes west ham

Kenny bids to Nik striker
LIVERPOOL want to hijack West Ham's pursuit of Rangers ace Nikica Jelavic.
And the Croatian striker's dad revealed his son dreams of moving to Anfield — under boss Kenny Dalglish.
Championship leaders West Ham made a £6million offer for Jelavic last week — but talks have stalled over the player's wage demands.
Jelavic's dad Philip said: "We know about the interest of West Ham and QPR. But Nikica has five or six clubs that are interested, including that of the great Liverpool.
"As for West Ham and QPR, Nikica is more ambitious than that.
"It's most likely that he'll sign for Liverpool.
"But there are a few days until the end of the window, so we'll see."
Jelavic, 26, is believed to want to double his £15,000-a-week wages to make the big move south and join the promotion push in East London.
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce turned to Jelavic after missing out on Huddersfield ace Jordan Rhodes and Upton Park chairman David Sullivan spoke to Rangers' owner Craig Whyte last week.
Allardyce said: "Jelavic is one of many others because we have been made aware by other sources that he might be available.
"We have made bids to bring people in — but have not managed it yet."

SPOT ON ... Mark Noble slots in to score for West Ham against Nottingham Forest
West Ham 2 Nottingham Forest 1
WEST HAM ace Jack Collison had to plead with fans for patience — despite going TOP of the table.
The Hammers lead the promotion race for the first time but looked anything but Premier League class against Forest.
They had to rely on two nerveless spot-kicks from penalty-king Mark Noble to scrape three points.
Midfielder Collison admitted: "We're at the top and have another couple of gears to find.
"It's frightening and sends out a message to other teams to say, 'We're there, we're not playing great but we're getting the results'.
"When it all comes together it's going to be great for us. We don't go out and try not to put five goals in, we go and do our best.
"Last season, I was out injured, so I know how it feels to be a fan. It's frustrating for them at times but it's also for us as players.
"We came in at half-time a bit disappointed with how we played but it was good that we've big players like Noble.
"It takes bottle to step up and stick away penalties like that."
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce must be thinking ahead to next season and admits his team is not ready for the Premier League.
Noble has earned his team six points with three penalties in the last two games because the goals have dried up from the strikers.
That is why Allardyce is in hot pursuit of Rangers forward Nikica Jelavic with talks ongoing after an initial £6million offer was rejected.
West Ham's demanding fans can make the players nervy at home but they must learn to adapt and deal with it as it is nothing like the pressure of facing Premier League teams.
Allardyce has a big task constructing a top-flight team from his current squad while Forest chief Steve Cotterill admits it could take him every day of his 3½-year deal to sort out the mess in his camp.
A more united performance masked rumours of dressing-room unrest at the City Ground, which Cotterill revealed he must sort out if he is to save a once-feared club from dropping into League One.
He said: "Maybe if I've got stuck into a few players it's because they're not doing what I know they can do. The reason I got this post is because of the state this club's in.
"I got a job at a difficult time. It might take me 3½ years to sort out but I can save the club otherwise I wouldn't have come here."
Ironically, it was Forest who provided the best moment of a drab match with Lewis McGugan's injury-time screamer, which was just consolation for Cotterill's team.
Noble had put the game to bed - literally - with spot-kicks either side of half-time. The first was rough on the visitors when Collison's cross cannoned into Guy Moussi's arm and then Chris Gunter handled on 62 minutes to let Noble score again.
Cotterill groaned: "It must have touched the hairs on his arm."

I'd rather we didn't go for Jelavic if he has more ambition than to play for us, not the type of player we need right now.

Can I ask why? Jelavic is in his prime and a seasoned international player. Rhodes is a promising youngster whose scored a lot of goals but only in Division 3 against some pretty poor teams.Muddy wrote:Cheers CH.

TBH, I've never seen either live and, in truth, would probably prefer Rhodes given the choice but i hear comments like yours frequently on the transfer window thread - often thrown in without any qualifying reason as to why Rhodes would be so much better than Jelavic.

Two things.
1. What a lot of rubbish in today's current bun as usual.
2. We can have 30 new strikers but if they play out on the left wing, they are unlikely to score too many goals. Allerdyce..I'm talking to you...
