West Ham United 3 Birmingham City 3
West Ham United 3 Birmingham City 3: match report

Ricardo Vaz Te's late penalty sealed a thrilling comeback by West Ham, whose first-half horror show had seriously damaged their hopes of automatic promotion.

A point was not the desired outcome but at least they showed the fighting spirit to come back, having been 3-1 behind at the break after an error-filled performance.

The pressure on West Ham had increased before kick-off with Southampton's victory leaving them seven points adrift of Nigel Adkins's team. This was their game in hand and they could not afford to waste it. But that is exactly what they did, gifting Birmingham goals, before the rally after the interval.

The third-placed side were punished for sloppy midfield play in the first half, carelessly giving the ball away twice in quick succession, leading to Birmingham's opening goals as the visitors broke forward and punished West Ham.

In-form Ricardo Vaz Te headed the home team back into the match - but, almost immediately, West Ham shot themselves in the foot again by making a mess of a corner, allowing Chris Burke to score. They were booed off at the break.

In the second half, they pile forward and cut the gap when Carlton Cole finished well then Vaz Te held his nerve to reward a much-improved effort.

West Ham had plenty of possession early on but could not use it effectively and the best chances started falling to Birmingham, who were slicing through their opponents with ease. Chris Burke forced Rob Green into a good reflex save and Jordan Mutch's corner was headed wide by Curtis Davies on the edge of the six-yard box.

All-action Mutch single-handedly created and scored Birmingham's opener after seizing on a loose pass from George McCartney. Mutch exchanged passes swiftly with Marlon King, sauntered forward then drove in from 25 yards.

Within three minutes, West Ham were reeling further. Carlton Cole lost the ball in midfield, allowing Wade Elliott to thread the ball forward for King, who kept his cool to slot the ball in. Home manager Sam Allardyce could only shake his head.

There was more bad news for them when McCartney and Peter Ramage clashed heads, leading to the West Ham left-back departing on a stretcher and going to hospital after suffering concussion.

The east London side persevered though, as Nicky Maynard's curling effort from 18 yards hit the bar. The Upton Park faithful were finally lifted when Mark Noble floated over a corner from the left and James Tomkins powerfully headed it forward for Vaz Te to flick in their goal.

But, just when Allardyce's men looked back in contention, another costly blunder speedily followed. Mutch's corner was cleared ineffectively by Kevin Nolan and was met by a Burke volley. The ball hit the ground but Cole moved out of position and the ball bounced over him and into the net.

Allardyce would have been livid at the break and his side came out looking desperate to make amends. There was soon more frustration though as Gary O'Neil went to ground in the penalty area after a Ramage challenge but no penalty was awarded.

They kept pressing as Nolan sent a bobbling, angled shot just wide of the far post. Another flashpoint followed when West Ham's players were furious as another spot-kick appeal was rejected after Cole went down while tussling with Steven Caldwell.

The frustration was eased when Nolan hooked the ball over for Cole, who controlled on his thigh and lashed in to make it 3-2. It was an engrossing spectacle and Cole and Danny Collins came agonisingly close to an equaliser, both men volleying over from 20 yards.

The comeback was finally complete when Burke handled Henri Lansbury‘s shot, allowing Vaz Te to rescue a point from the spot as he smashed in confidently.

BALOTELLI ON HIS WAY OUT
Inevitably, the main story in today's papers is that Mario Balotelli is on his way out of Man City, with Roberto Mancini saying he will "probably" sell the volatile striker in the summer.

The Mirror lead with the line that Mancini told Balotelli he will never play for City again, and blamed him for blowing the team's title bid, however ludicrous that may be. The Daily Express concur, suggesting that Mancini's indifference to the probable suspension the striker now faces indicates his willingness to let Balotelli leave.

It gets worse for City too, with club officials forced to deny reports of a dressing-room bust-up between the players after the defeat at the Emirates. There were rumours that Vincent Kompany let Balotelli know exactly what he thought of the Italian's performance, but a spokesperson dismissed any suggestions of an altercation as 'rubbish'.

The reaction is extremely loud and incredibly hyperbolic, but the consensus is that Mario will be on his way back to Milan very soon, much to the relief of his manager and teammates.

SUAREZ TO LEAVE LIVERPOOL
With Kenny Dalglish's future looking increasingly insecure at Liverpool, the Daily Star claim that Luis Suarez will look to leave Anfield should the Scot be ushered out the door.

Dalglish has backed Suarez to the hilt this season, incurring a huge amount of criticism for his support of the striker following the incident of racism towards Patrice Evra. The Star say that this hasn't gone unnoticed by Suarez and the Uruguayan is worried by reports that Dalglish will be on his way at the end of May.

PSG remain the favourites to secure the 25-year-old's signature, but AC Milan, Inter and Roma are also reported to be interested.

SOUTHAMPTON TARGET DOYLE
Kevin Doyle has been rather useless this season, notching just four goals as Wolves plummet towards the Championship. However, despite that measly total, the Mirror claim that Southampton will offer the Irishman a Premier League lifeline if they achieve promotion.

We're not sure whether this is a good thing for Doyle. A year ago he was tipped for a possible £10million move to Arsenal, and now he's being considered for a £4million swoop by the Saints. At 28, the striker hasn't really lived up to his early promise.

MERTESACKER TO RETURN TO GERMANY
An interesting line from the Mirror now, who report that Per Mertesacker has kicked his last ball for Arsenal and will be shipped back to Germany in the summer.

The giant centre-back only signed for the Gunners at the start of the season, but apparently Arsene Wenger has seen enough and is ready to let the German international return to the Bundesliga.

Any move would of course increase speculation that Jan Vertonghen is close to signing, with the Ajax defender already speaking openly of his desire to join Arsenal.

AND THE REST
Hoffenheim want Gylfi Sigurdsson back at the end of his loan at Swansea...Norwich striker Chris Martin is a £1.2million target for Brighton...Blackpool face competition from Reading for Scott Dobbie...Clint Dempsey has admitted he could leave Fulham at the end of the season.

West Ham v Birmingham reaction

Sam Allardyce has all but given up on the Championship title after West Ham's sixth draw in seven home matches, a 3-3 draw with Birmingham.

Ricardo Vaz Te rescued a point for the Hammers, who were 3-1 down at half-time, at Upton Park on Monday evening with an 89th-minute penalty but leaders Southampton are now six points clear of the third-placed Irons with four games to go.

In-form Birmingham raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Jordon Mutch and Marlon King and while Vaz Te pulled one back on 45 minutes, Chris Burke immediately made it 3-1 before the break.

Carlton Cole's 70th minute effort set up a grandstand finish and Vaz Te levelled matters after Burke handled in the box but West Ham remain three points behind Reading who play on Tuesday.

And Allardyce believes the only way the Hammers can gain automatic promotion is in second place if Reading slip up against Brighton and then Southampton on Friday.

"It depends on what Reading do tomorrow and then what happens between Southampton and Reading," said Allardyce.

"If Reading slip up tomorrow and then Southampton beat Reading that's our only way back really. And at the end of that we've still got to go for four games with four wins.

"The first half suicidal commitment was unbelievable from my point of view.

"The players, when we set out to win a game of football, they need to be aware of what the opposition do and what they don't do and what we did was play straight into Birmingham's hands in the first half.

"There wasn't enough determination in the team by the players who defended that corner to say these boys are not going to score here at all costs.

"We've paid for a sloppy first half yet again and unfortunately while it's a magnificent comeback once again it's only one point and not three and three is what we wanted."

Vaz Te's late strike brought an end to the Blues' three game winning run but Chris Hughton's side remain in fourth spot as they close in on a play-off place.

And while his side led until the 89th minute, Hughton believes it was a point gained rather than two dropped, insisting Birmingham's fate is in their own hands.

"It's a good point here, you can only get the wins that you need to get and get the points that you need to get and you hope that some of the other results go for you," he said.

"And I think the results of late have been good for us but whether we get into that top six or not won't be down to other teams it will be down to us. If we can keep the momentum we've got at the moment hopefully we'll be OK.

"It was tough to keep it going for 90 minutes but we are a team that have come here and scored three goals. There won't be many that do that this season.

"I've only got good things to say about my team and I thought we were excellent and well worthy of the draw - it's not easy playing two games in two games."

Got a story?

Maybe just maybe, automatic promotion could still be a possibility for West Ham United after this Easter Monday encounter at Upton Park, where Sam Allardyce’s side mounted a stirring and spirited second half fight-back to salvage a precious point.

Ricardo Vaz Te’s 88th-minute penalty secured an unlikely draw for the Hammers, who had trailed by two goals at the break and Big Sam’s side now lie three points behind Reading with just four games to play.

Jordan Mutch and Marlon King had given Birmingham a two-goal lead by the half-hour mark, before Vaz Te gave West Ham a glimmer of hope with a header in stoppage time, only for Chris Burke to restore City’s advantage with virtually the last kick of a forlorn first-half

But it was a different story after the break, as Carlton Cole gave the Hammers a lifeline with 20 minutes remaining before Vaz Te levelled with that last gasp spot-kick that at least keeps Reading and pace-setting Southampton in their sights.

Quite literally, it had been a Good Friday for West Ham, who had broken the club record for away-day victories by making it a delectable dozen wins on the road at Oakwell.

And following that barnstorming four-goal battering of Barnsley three days earlier, Allardyce allowed himself the luxury of a slight re-shuffle as Abdoulaye Faye and lone-striker Cole came in for substitutes Guy Demel and Matt Taylor.

That saw James Tomkins head over to the right-back slot, while Friday’s scorers Vaz Te and Nicky Maynard pushed forward to join nine-goal Cole at each and every opportunity.

With ten minutes on the clock, Vaz Te let fly with the first attempt of the afternoon but his long-ranger deflected off David Murphy’s head and, shortly afterwards, the Hammers wide boy nodded over, too.

Ex-Hammer Chris Hughton had seen his fourth-placed side extend their unbeaten run to four matches with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday and kicking-off six points behind his former club, the Blues’ boss also made two changes with Wade Elliott and Guirane N’Daw replacing substitutes Andros Townsend and Hammers nemesis Nikola Zigic.

And as the quarter-hour mark neared, the breaking Burke looked like giving City the lead, when he ignored the supporting King to send a low, angled 15-yarder skidding across the greasy Boleyn Ground grass but, thankfully, an alert Robert Green was able to shepherd the awkward shot aside for a corner, which Curtis Davies then headed wide.

With West Ham struggling to break through the Midlanders’ midfield quintet, Mutch also drilled a low effort wide just inches wide before inflicting far worse damage on 27 minutes.

This time, the Blues midfielder robbed Gary O’Neil just inside the Hammers’ own half and after playing a one-two with King, he threaded a low 18-yarder around Winston Reid’s shins and inside the base of the static Green’s right-hand post to claim his second goal of the campaign.

If that was not bad enough, Birmingham took just three minutes to double their lead, when Cole mis-controlled and Elliott sent King sprinting between Tomkins and Faye and with the whites of the helplessly exposed Hammers’ ‘keeper in his sights the City striker calmly took his tally to 15 for the season.

A nasty clash of heads between George McCartney and Peter Ramage then saw the home left-back stretchered away as Danny Collins came on and, in the dying seconds of a desperately frustrating first-half, Maynard curled onto the bar only for Kevin Nolan to scuff the rebound straight into the arms of the relieved Boaz Myhill.

Two minutes into stoppage time, though, Vaz Te finally looked to have given the Hammers hope, when he headed home from close range after Tomkins nodded Mark Noble’s deep corner back across goal

That was the Portuguese poacher’s sixth goal since his January deadline day arrival from Barnsley but still Birmingham were destined to have the final word with virtually the last kick of the opening period.

This time Mutch’s corner was nodded away by Nolan, only for Burke to return a 20-yarder bizarrely bouncing into the turf and under the left-hand angle, thereby sending an exasperated East End back into stunned silence with his 12th goal of the season.

Henri Lansbury replaced Maynard for the restart and, after two penalty appeals were waved away, Vaz Te screwed wide, while Nolan fired across the face of goal as the claret and blue fans desperately willed West Ham forward.

Steven Caldwell then denied Cole in the act of shooting with a timely tackle but, with 20 minutes remaining, the former England striker made it into double-figures for the season, when he unleashed an angled 12-yarder into the far corner after Nolan cleverly held off his markers before hooking the ball into the danger zone.

Not content with one, Cole sent another 20-yarder scorching inches over before Collins deposited another fizzing effort onto the roof of the besieged Myhill’s net.

The brave Blues keeper also sprinted out to pluck the ball off Cole’s toes before Allardyce replaced Noble with Sam Baldock for the final ten minutes in one last desperate push.

And with just three minutes of an absorbing second half remaining, the Hammers incredibly drew themselves level when Lansbury’s scorching shot was charged down by the arm of Burke and cool as you like, with minimal run-up Vaz Te slammed home the consequent spot-kick.

With Southampton having beaten Crystal Palace earlier in the afternoon, this result still leaves Big Sam’s side three points adrift of second-placed Reading, who now travel to Brighton & Hove Albion tomorrow night, with the entire East End hoping that the Royals run aground on the south coast, ironically before the Seagulls, themselves, head to Upton Park on Saturday.

HAMMERS: Green, Tomkins, McCartney (Collins 34), Reid, Faye, O’Neil, Noble (Baldock 82), Nolan, Vaz Te, Maynard (Lansbury h/t), Cole. Unused subs: Taylor, Demel.

Independent
Ricardo Vaz Te's late penalty salvaged a point for West Ham
United yesterday, but Sam Allardyce fears his side's first-half
display may ultimately cost them in their efforts to claim an
automatic promotion spot in the Championship.

Birmingham City, who consolidated their position in fourth, took full advantage, establishing a 3-1 half-time lead that appeared destined to deliver a valuable victory before Vaz Te claimed his second goal of the game three minutes from the finish.

West Ham were unable to fashion a fourth, however, and, stirring as the recovery was, have now failed to win in seven successive home games, leaving them three points behind second-placed Reading who travel to Brighton tonight.

"Our first-half suicide was unbelievable," said the West Ham manager. "When we set out to win a game you have to be aware of what the opposition do and we played straight into their hands. I said before the game that if you come off the pitch with a clean sheet, then you'll win the game, but I must have been talking Swahili.

"The only way back for us is if Reading slip up tomorrow and Southampton beat them on Friday and we win all four games left."

For the Birmingham manager, Chris Hughton, the disappointment of conceding a late goal was balanced by the knowledge that results elsewhere had been kind to his side who now look certain to finish in the top six. "After the disappointment of losing a 3-1 lead, the reality sets in that this is a good point," he said.

Jordan Mutch put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute when he was allowed to advance unchallenged towards the home goal before beating Green with a left-foot shot, with the keeper rooted to the spot. Three minutes later Marlon King made it two.

Vaz Te appeared to have kick-started the recovery in first-half added time but Chris Burke immediately responded when the home side failed to deal with a corner adequately.

Boos greeted the half-time whistle but West Ham's response was far more encouraging, and Carlton Cole struck his side's second goal with a left-foot shot from Kevin Nolan's pull-back with 20 minutes remaining.

The West Ham pressure grew relentless and they were eventually rewarded when Burke blocked Henri Lansbury's shot, allowing Vaz Te to claim his fifth goal in four games.

"I said to the players beforehand that if they come off the pitch having kept a clean sheet, then we'll have won – but I must have been talking Swahili." West Ham United mounted a rousing comeback to recover from two goals down and salvage a draw but Sam Allardyce was aghast at how victory eluded his team, extending their winless home streak to seven matches and complicating their hopes of claiming an automatic promotion spot.

With the Championship's leading two sides, Southampton and Reading, facing each other on Friday, this was an opportunity for West Ham to enhance their chances of returning directly to the Premier League but Birmingham City's opportunism and their own slipshod defending meant they made up only minimal ground.

West Ham enjoyed early possession but Birmingham were solid and soon exposed the fragility of a home defence that has been impeccable for most of the season but has now conceded seven goals in two home matches. Chris Hughton's team went in front in the 27th minute when West Ham gave the ball away in midfield. Jordon Mutch was allowed to carry the ball towards the box before sidestepping Abdoulaye Faye and firing a low 20-yard shot into the net. Green did not even move to save it.

West Ham were penetrated again three minutes later, Wade Elliott slipping a pass through to Marlon King who finished expertly. The home side rallied and Nicky Maynard curled a delicate shot against the bar a minute before Vaz Tê cut the deficit, heading in from close range after James Tomkins had nodded a corner back across goal. That was in the 44th minute but West Ham could not make it to the break without conceding again.

After a Birmingham corner was cleared to the edge of the area, Burke volleyed at goal and Curtis Davies appeared to apply a touch from close range to help it past Green. "Our first‑half suicide was unbelievable," said Allardyce. "We punished ourselves by giving the ball away cheaply and they got two great finishes. Vaz Tê's goal should have been the start of the recovery but there wasn't enough determination when defending the corner – not enough players saying, 'These boys aren't going to score and, if I have to get my teeth kicked out and jaw broken , so be it.' Instead we committed suicide again."

West Ham dominated the second half but most of their attacking was predictable and it seemed Birmingham had only to retain their shape and win the many aerial duels to stay ahead. The loss of Guirame N'Daw to injury in the 68th minute was a significant blow ithin two minutes that defence was breached. Kevin Nolan was given too much time to collect a punt into the box and feed it back to Carlton Cole, who drove low into the net.

Birmingham nearly responded at once when Nikola Zigic, who had come on moments before the goal, headed a cross by Burke inches wide. But three minutes from time West Ham got a break when they were awarded a penalty after Henri Lansbury's 20-yard shot crashed into Burke's arm.

Vaz Tê walloped into the net from the spot. "While it was a magnificent comeback, we wanted three points and only got one," grumbled Allardyce, who says he is now relying on Reading unravelling.

"The only way back for us now is if Reading drop points on Tuesday [against Brighton & Hove Albion] and Southampton beat them on Friday and even then we'll have to win all four of our games."

Steve Coppell has been announced at Crawley Town's director of football.

This just after Steve Evans, the most disgusting personality associated with football, left to become Rotherham's manager a couple of days ago.

Hammers snatch draw
By Dylan King
Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Ricardo Vaz Te’s 89th-minute penalty salvaged a point for West Ham but it is now seven home games without a win after drawing 3-3 with Chris Hughton’s Birmingham last night.

The Hammers were shellshocked at the break as they trailed 3-1.

Jordon Mutch struck first with an impressive solo goal before Marlon King doubled the Blues’ advantage.

Vaz Te’s header gave West Ham a lifeline but Chris Burke restored Birmingham’s two-goal lead.

Carlton Cole netted to give the Hammers hope and Vaz Te levelled late on, from the spot, after Burke was harshly penalised for handball.

However West Ham are three points off an automatic promotion spot and Reading, who currently occupy second, have a game in hand and can go six points clear of the Hammers should they beat Brighton tonight.

Earlier a brace from Rickie Lambert was enough for Nigel Adkins’s Southampton to win 2-0 at Crystal Palace and go three points clear.

"He’s a talented, talented football player," said Adkins. "He’s going from strength to strength and he’s reaping rewards for his hard work this season."

Elsewhere 10-man Blackpool kept their play-off hopes alive after coming from behind at home to Barnsley to snatch a 1-1 draw.

Leeds dropped into the bottom half of the table after losing 2-0 at home to Derby after Michael Brown was sent off early on. Craig Bryson and Steve Davies scored in each half to earn Nigel Clough’s side the win.

Serbian press (translated by me, kumb exclusive):
CHAMPIONSHIP: Birmingham burried West Ham hopes
Fantastic six goal match at Upton Park

West Ham won away at Burnsley few days ago, but Birmingham derby showed once again how big the crisis is when they play at Upton Park. Birmingham blitzkrieg which lasted from 27 to 30th minute shocked home side which mindlessly lost possession on both occasion and the peak of frivolousness came in the finish of the first half when they, after Vaz Te goal, naïvely let away team score again in the 4th minute of added time.

Still, Carlton Cole's announced stormy end game: Hammers managed to reach 3:3 two minutes before time but they couldn't get one more in. Too little for West Ham since Reading has 3 point advantage with Brighton game still to be played.
cheers, CH!
