Transfer Tavern

Fulham & the West Ham Midfield Dynamo

Fulham are tracking West Ham youngster George Moncur reports The Daily Star today. The 18 year old midfielder has been on loan at AFC Wimbledon since January.

The promising player, son of former Tottenham, Swindon and West Ham player John Moncur, has come up through the academy at West Ham and has gone on to win caps for England at Under 18 and Under 19 levels. He has yet to make an appearance for West Ham at senior level but since joining AFC Wimbledon on loan he has made 17 appearances for the League 2 side and scored one goal.

West Ham have a reputation for developing good young players at their academy and a few have gone on to be very successful at the highest levels such as Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole.

Whether Moncur is going to develop into a Premiership quality player or even better it is impossible to say. Some players continue to develop day by day while some hit their full potential and are unable to develop further. Unfortunately football is a risk. Nothing is guaranteed.

Financially the risk must be much smaller to sign a unproven young player that can be developed into a role specific for the club requirements, than to spend countless millions of pounds on a player from a foreign league who could also fail to acclimatise to the Premiership style of football.

The fact that Fulham are looking to up and coming youngsters may become much more prevalent with the UEFA financial fair play rules coming into force over the next three years. With clubs having to make a profit year on year, less money will be available for big money transfers and thus clubs will have to concentrate more on developing their own talent. This can only be good for homegrown talent and ultimately the national team.

My opinion is that the owners have a master plan and that includes a move to the OS no matter what. It's their long range strategic plan for financial growth. That's the bottom line.
They are not so bothered if we don't go up this year because we will not be moving into the OS next year. They are fully prepared to either offer more lucrative contracts to some of our players to keep them, or will purchase players in the summer whom they think ensure promotion next season. We have some of the most loyal fans in the land and they are banking on that.
The die has been cast I believe.
It may not be all bad tho. Let's face it, we've had a pretty woeful few years in recent times.
Let's beat Brighton today and Karen.....please put your tits away.
Cheers as always CH.

team talk

Sam challenges his Hammers

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce fears his side's season will go "down the drain" if they fail to beat play-off chasing Brighton at Upton Park.

Allardyce has labelled the game the most important in the Hammers' season as they look to close the gap on the Championship automatic promotion places.

The east Londoners can cut the gap behind second-placed Southampton to three points after they lost 3-1 to Reading at St Mary's on Friday night.

"We are more than capable of winning four games on the trot and it has to start with winning the most important game of the season so far on Saturday against Brighton," Allardyce said.

"Otherwise we risk throwing a fantastic season down the drain.

"I have no doubt that there will be slip-ups between the top three before the end of the season but they can afford to drop points whereas we no longer have that luxury."

Allardyce's side have fallen off the pace following a seven-game winless run at home, six of which have been draws.

"We have slipped up enough in recent weeks by drawing too many matches and that has to stop now," he said.
