The game had long since been won. Acclaim flowed from the stands, Everton were playing with a swagger and all that was required was the final 60 seconds to be negotiated.
Had David Moyes wanted, he could have stood back and soaked up the atmosphere.
Nobody would have begrudged him the luxury of coasting through the last minute of his final home game as Everton manager.

Not a bit of it. Moyes had decided one more substitution was required and, while others might have chosen to let the clock run down, he was sternly telling Bryan Oviedo what he wanted him to do.
Such professionalism, addressing the details, is what sets the best managers apart.
Goodison Park could easily have turned into a circus yesterday, but Moyes would not allow it. His reward, no matter how hard it was to keep focus, was a thumping 2-0 win over West Ham.
‘It was a perfect finish,’ said Moyes. ‘More important for me was how well Everton played. I thought we played like a top team, not one in fifth or sixth. We’d have been a match for any side.
‘The level of professionalism to show they didn’t get caught up in anything was a credit. Whoever comes in here next will enjoy that.
‘They are a really good group of players. It was really emotional.
‘All the stewards were clapping me when I came in and I didn’t know what to do. I’m really fortunate to get that reception. I am gobsmacked, thankful and humble for what the people of Everton have shown me.’
Moyes has been careful, since the news broke that he would replace Sir Alex Ferguson, not to show a lack of respect to his employers by mentioning his prospective ones and, in his programme notes, there was no word he is headed for Old Trafford, just that he is leaving.
He was prepared for a thorny reception. ‘As a fan you are entitled to support your team,’ said Moyes.
‘I’m a football supporter and if I’d have been on the terraces I’d have clapped the manager. I might not have liked what he was doing but I’d have applauded.’
As it was, the response he received was anything but prickly. Warmth has been lacking between him and the crowd in recent months — notably during the FA Cup quarter-final defeat against Wigan — but this was their chance to show some appreciation.
The goal which ensured proceedings started in the best possible fashion was indicative of the way Everton’s style has developed over the last 11 years; if they used to be functional, here was flamboyance.
Marouane Fellaini started the move, ushering Leighton Baines forward. The England left back skipped past Jack Collison and returned the ball to Fellaini. He ****ed it on to Steven Pienaar, who in turn ****ed it to Kevin Mirallas, who fired in. A brilliant strike.
West Ham could not get out of their own half and the speed of Everton’s passing and movement should have secured greater reward.As bad as the visitors were — they only threatened Tim Howard’s goal three times — Everton showed why they have spent the campaign in the top six.
‘I warned the players before the game what it was going to be like,’ West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, fresh from signing a new two-year deal, reflected. ‘It was exactly that. We couldn’t cope. We were lucky to get away with 2-0.’
Mirallas wrapped things up in the 60th minute, his shot looping beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen after he had been freed by Darron Gibson. Leon Osman and Pienaar also went close, while Victor Anichebe fluffed a glorious chance.
But nothing was going to stand in the way of Moyes being given a grand send-off and the poignancy of the day was further illustrated by the cheers for Phil Neville, who will leave the club when his contract expires, and Tim Cahill, who had flown in from New York.
‘What I will miss was what you saw in the middle of the second half,’ said Moyes. ‘The supporters weren’t cheering David Moyes, they were cheering their football club.
‘That was the toughest part. Every year we have improved. That’s the one thing I will walk away thinking.’ Judging by the fanfare he received, he won’t be the only one.
