Main man: Andy Carroll must the priority for West Ham as they enter the summer, says Sam Allardyce

Signing Carroll must be the 'main priority' for West Ham, insists Allardyce

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce would love to build his team around Andy Carroll next season - and maintains signing the England forward on a permanent deal from Liverpool must be the club’s 'main priority' over the summer.

The 24-year-old played the final match of his season-long loan in yesterday’s 4-2 win over relegated Reading at Upton Park, where captain Kevin Nolan netted a hat-trick.

Carroll was a thorn in Reading’s side all afternoon, despite not being able to add to his seven goals to mark his recall to the England squad for the friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

Allardyce believes having Carroll on board next season would provide the perfect platform on which to build from their creditable 10th place after avoiding joining Reading back in the npower Championship.

'If we can start with Andy Carroll that would be a great achievement for us as he can only get better and better,' Allardyce said.

'Then we build around that in terms of how we want to improve next year, with better quality. It is our target to make it a permanent situation.

'Hopefully we can get somewhere in the near future to do that. It’s our main priority. There are negotiations between the club and Liverpool.

'We have to pursue it to the very end one way or another and we will find out as quick as we can if it is a yes or a no.'

The striker posted a message on Twitter on Sunday night saying how much he had 'enjoyed every minute of being at West Ham'.

However, with Liverpool set to hold out for a £17million fee for their 6ft 3in frontman, and Newcastle and Monaco also said to be monitoring the situation, the Irons look in for some tough dealings.

Thanks largely in part to Carroll’s tiresome work, the Irons had looked in complete control against Reading after a mistake from goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, called up to the England squad for the first time, gifted Nolan the opener on 23 minutes, with Ricardo Vaz Te sweeping home a second.

The Royals, though, responded with two quick goals at the start of the second half through Garath McCleary and substitute Adam Le Fondre.

West Ham eventually made sure of a creditable top-10 finish when Nolan netted again and then completed his hat-trick with a header three minutes from time.

Allardyce paid tribute to Nolan, who ended the campaign as the club’s top scorer.

'Kevin has always been top class. It’s another double-figures scoring job he’s done yet again,' said Allardyce.

'When we needed Kevin again he was there. That’s what he is good at. When he scores his goals they are always very important.'

Reading’s fate had long been sealed and they finished the season in 19th place.

: Kevin Nolan celebrates his hat-trick against Reading with Andy Carroll

KEVIN NOLAN FEARS ANDY CARROLL WILL SNUB WEST HAM

KEVIN Nolan admits the lure of European football could persuade Andy Carroll to turn down West Ham.

England star Carroll, 24, has just completed a season-long loan at Upton Park from Liverpool, scoring seven goals in 24 games.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has declared his top priority is to build a team around the striker.

But club captain Nolan, Carroll’s friend and former team-mate at Newcastle, is not confident that will happen.

The Hammers finished 10th in the Premier League but are highly unlikely to be challenging for a Champions League place anytime soon.

And that means the door is wide open for a bigger club to tempt Carroll away from Anfield, with Tottenham and cash-rich French outfit Monaco already linked.

Nolan said: “Andy is a clever lad, he knows he has got to play football.

“If he gets offered a club in the Champions League or the Europa League, then he has got to make the decision.

“I know he has enjoyed his time here, you can see that on the pitch. He gets on well with all the lads, so we will see what happens.”

Liverpool paid Newcastle £35m for Carroll in January 2011.

And although he is not in manager Brendan Rodgers’ plans, they are still keen to recoup around half of that fee.

But West Ham co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are reluctant to pay more than £10m.

Nolan, who netted a hat-trick in Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Reading, was adamant the Hammers could still do well without Carroll.

The midfielder added: “It will be massive if we do get Andy but it is not the be-all and end-all. I have been with Sam a long time.

“When he did not manage to get his first man, he has always managed to get his second man, and we always manage to do well.

“If he gets the chance to bring in the quality of players he wants, then I am sure we will be aiming for the higher echelons of the Premier League.

“That is what we want, what the fans want and what the owners want.

“I have a lot of faith that Sam will get the men he wants in the summer and he will be working hard with the chairman to do just that.”

One man who appears to have already rejected the Hammers is Sevilla’s prolific striker Alvaro Negredo, 27.

Reports in Spain claim the forward has told the East London club they are not big enough to tempt him to leave.

Signing Liverpool striker Andy Carroll not 'the be all and end all' for West Ham, says Kevin Nolan

Captain Kevin Nolan does not believe West Ham pushing through a deal for Andy Carroll is “the be all and end all” of the club's summer transfer policy.

Irons boss Sam Allardyce would love to build next season's team around the England striker, who impressed during his loan spell from Liverpool despite only scoring seven times.

However, while Carroll last night posted a message on Twitter saying how much he had "enjoyed every minute of being at West Ham", making a permanent switch has several hurdles to overcome. Not least the £17million fee parent club Liverpool would expect the Irons to meet, with former side Newcastle and Monaco said to be closely monitoring the situation.

Nolan, who played with Carroll during their spells on Tyneside, hopes to see his good friend back in claret and blue, but accepts the club must not pin all of their aspirations on progression next season at the feet of the 6ft 3ins England frontman.

"It will be massive if we do get Andy, but it is not the be all and end all," Nolan said.

"I have been with Sam a long time. When he did not manage to get his first man, he has always managed to get his second man and we always manage to do well.

"If he gets the chance to bring the quality of the players he wants, then I am sure we will be aiming for the higher echelons of the Premier League.

"I have a lot of faith that Sam will get the men he wants in the summer and will be working hard with the chairman to do that."

Nolan has not been putting any extra pressure on Carroll and understands the forward's own playing ambitions will be a bit factor in his final decision.

"Andy is a clever lad, he knows he has got to play football," said Nolan, who left St James Park in the summer of 2011, helping West Ham win promotion from the Championship at the first attempt.

"If he gets offered someone who are in the Champions League or the Europa League, then he has got to make the decision.

"I know he has enjoyed his time here, you can see that on the pitch, he gets on well with all the lads, so we will see what happens."

Whether or not they are able to push through a deal for Carroll, West Ham are expected to be busy over the summer as they look to push on from a creditable 10th place.

The Irons have already been linked with moves for the likes of Celtic forward Gary Hooper and Vitesse Arnhem's Wilfried Bony - top scorer in the Dutch league - as well as veteran Italian midfielder Massimo Ambrosini, who is out of contract at AC Milan.

Romania captain Razvan Rat is another said to be on Allardyce's wish list, with the 31-year-old left-back available on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Austrian defender Emanuel Pogatetz will leave at the end of his loan spell, while Allardyce must also make a decision on Wellington Paulista and Morocco forward Marouane Chamakh is set to be sold by Arsenal, probably back to France after failing to impress at Upton Park.

Nolan believes Allardyce, who has just agreed a two-year contract extension, will help keep the club moving forwards as they prepare for relocation to the Olympic Stadium.

The midfielder said: "We are glad Sam has signed his deal, because as a squad we feel we can move forwards and hopefully with a few new faces in the summer we can kick on again.

"But it is going to be about consolidation because everyone knows how tough it is going to be.

"We will review everything, though, with the way Sam is with analysis. It keeps you on your toes, nothing goes unnoticed here."

West Ham co-chairman David Gold has, meanwhile, indicated the club would like to introduce a safe-standing area once they are settled in Stratford, with a post-conversion capacity of 54,000 scheduled for the start of the 2016-17 season.

Speaking to West Ham e-Magazine Blowing Bubbles, Gold said: "Safe standing in football stadiums will happen. I promise you it will happen.

"I would be stunned if we don't have some sort of safe-standing experiment soon.

"I think, in five years, we will see safe standing at football stadiums because, let's face it, it's not very expensive to install and it's safe, very safe. In fact, it's twice or three times safer than what we have at the moment."

Sam Allardyce: Confirmed interest in Razvan Rat

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce confirms move for Razvan Rat

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has confirmed the club are on the verge of signing Romanian defender Razvan Rat.

Rat is available on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at Shakhtar Donetsk and Allardyce has targeted the 31-year-old to help fill the club's problematic left-back spot.

Talks are thought to be at an advanced stage and Allardyce is hopeful of making Rat his first signing of the summer.

"I think at the moment it is talking terms and conditions and if we get through that then hopefully it's a chance of a medical and then see where we go from there," Allardyce told Sky Sports News.

Allardyce believes Rat will prove a valuable addition to his squad next season.

"He has played Champions League this year, if everything goes to plan we get a player that has played at the highest level for his country and for Shaktar Donetsk at the moment," added Allardyce.

"His experience and talents from abroad bringing them into the Premier League would be a great asset for us if we can sort it out."

Without sounding like i'm on too much of a downer, I have to say that Carroll's comments seem to be being said very much in the past tense and Nolan's comments also don't give me much hope that big Andy will stay. As for Rat, my only concern is that if he is still a champions league level player then why would he drop a level to play for us unless he's just after a big pay cheque? Either that or he's past it? He may be perfectly ok - this deal is reminding me somewhat of the Tomas Repka deal.
