Gary O'Neil: Has committed himself to West Ham

Gary O'Neil always expected to agree new deal at West Ham

Gary O'Neil says he was always confident he would remain at West Ham United, despite officially being released by the club.

The midfielder was among those to see their contracts at Upton Park expire at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

With no extension agreed, O'Neil was dropped into the free agent pool and freed to discuss terms with any interested parties.

As it happens, the club he has committed to is the same one he has spent the last two years with.

The 30-year-old claims that was always going to be the case, with there a desire on both sides to get a new deal thrashed out.

"Everything's been agreed," O'Neil told Sky Sports News.

"I didn't need a medical, obviously they know me quite well. All the terms are agreed and everyone's happy, so I'll just sign Monday morning.

"It took a little while. With everyone being on holiday stuff drags out, but we got there in the end."

On being released only to re-sign, O'Neil added: "That's the way it comes out in the press, slightly differently to how it is. We were always sorting it out and I was confident I would end up there."

Karren Brady Set To Leave West Ham?

David Gold David Sullivan Karren BradyThis week West Ham’s Vice-Chairman Karren Brady mentioned in an interview that she would like to embark on a career in politics, stating “I love politics… I want to get involved.” Most media oulets have run with the story, and while of course this doesn’t mean Brady is about to leave us, it has certainly got me thinking about her role in running our club, and what it would mean for West Ham if she did decide to head for more political pastures.

The David’s have been outspoken in their desire to be involved in running the club for the long haul- a sentiment that Karren Brady hasn’t really echoed. Now with her comments about an eventual change in career, does this mean Brady doesn’t consider her current role as a long-term appointment, and how would her (again, eventual- not jumping too many guns here) departure affect the club if that were the case?

I think we can all agree that the current board has been doing an ace job. We’re bringing in and legitimately linked with top quality players, enjoying entertaining football (at home anyway), have got kits made by a huge global company, and I’ve never been so excited for a football season to start up again.

But of this current high-achieving board, Brady is more well-known for her second job on the Apprentice than for her role at West Ham. She was, of course, absolutely instrumental in securing the Olympic Stadium for us, but certainly didn’t win over any fans with her suggestion that we become “West Ham Olympic” – nor by calling fans who opposed the move to the OS “a bit blind or a bit crazy.”

For me, I’m a big fan. Brady has an impressive football and business CV. There are few woman in football that I can look up to, and I admire the way she’s worked her way up to a high position in a male-dominated industry (although she did tweet using the wrong form of ‘their’ recently, and fell a bit in my esteem.)

Financially, she seems to have been good for the club (although it’s always tough to see who is pulling what strings.) According to her website in her first year as MD at Birmingham “the club recorded a financial trading profit” and after three years “made an overall profit for the first time in modern history.” Her website also similarly states that “following her first 12 months at West Ham, the club made a trading profit for the first time in many years.” We certainly feel more financially secure than we have done in years.

Of course if she does decide to go after her political dreams, she might not need to leave West Ham. She certainly could handle another role concurrently. Plenty of politics exist in football; although politicians in football are few and far between (the most notable exception would be David Milliband being on Sunderland’s board until our favourite “fascist” came along.)

There’s certainly nothing to suggest Karren wants out at Upton Park anytime. I think she’s done well for us so far, and hope she continues to do so- but her wistful ‘change of career’ comments do lead me to think this may not be a long-term commitment for her.

What do you think- will Karren depart us for deeper political waters? And, if she does, will she be missed?

sorry people struggled big time on west ham this morning

Sam Allardyce's side finished 10th in the Premier League

Hammers need one more striker’

Sam Allardyce's side finished 10th in the Premier LeaguePhoto: Back Page Images
Tony Cottee believes that West Ham United need to bring in one more striker to complement the arrival of Andy Carroll ahead of next season.

Carroll completed a much-anticipated move to Upton Park on a six-year deal from Liverpool after the 24-year-old England international impressed during his season-long loan from the Reds last term.

However, Hammers legend Cottee believes that Sam Allardyce will look to bring in another forward before the start of the 2013-14 campaign as the east London club look to build on their 10th-place finish last season.

“It was a good season for the club last year, finishing 10th in our first season back in the Premier League,” Cottee told West Ham TV. “Right at the end of last season, I felt we needed to strengthen up front.

“The Andy Carroll conundrum has been resolved and we obviously have Modibo Maiga, Ricardo Vaz Te and Elliot Lee as the guys who are squad players. To have a successful season in the Premier League you need to have four quality strikers.

“That is the aim as we come towards the start of the season. We need to get a striker in. The signing of Andy is great for the Club, so if we can keep Maiga and Vaz Te and get one more in, then I feel that is where our priorities lie.

“We’re pretty good in midfield. We could maybe do with a couple of players with a little bit of pace in the squad.

“At centre-half we’re fine and I think we’re OK in the goalkeeping position, so it’s mainly the forward positions for me.”

Let Me Entertain You

Les FerdinandNow more often than not over my years at the Boleyn Ground we have been lucky enough to have been entertained by some great players, Frank McAvennie, Paolo Di Canio, Joe Cole and Carlos Tevez, to name just a few.

However, it is fair to say that I have seen many a team or sometimes certain individuals come to town and turn us over. Now it goes without saying that I like to see West Ham win, I get the major hump if we lose, and my girlfriend regularly mentions that I am in a bad mood between the months of August to May! But sometimes you have to hold your hands up and admit, yep we were well beaten, they/he were quality so no complaints from me!

With regards team performances there are two that stand out over the years. Now the first I will doubt I will be on any of your lists as it involves the might that is Queens Park Rangers! It was August 1993 and West Ham had just been promoted to the Premier League and following a midweek win over Sheffield Wednesday we fancied our chances of back to back victories. QPR had a different idea, at the time they were one of the top London clubs and upfront they had Les Ferdinand who was arguably hitting the prime of his career. On the day he scored twice and completely tore us apart. It was a complete strikers display, strength, pace, hard-work, and clinical finishing. He was being marked by Colin Foster though, so he has probably had harder days at the office. The final score was 4-0 to QPR and the scoring was completed by the Premier League legends that are Darren Peacock and Gary Penrice! A long and hard season looked on the cards, however, a couple of weeks later Billy Bonds and Harry Redknapp sold Julian Dicks and rather unbelievably David Burrows, Mike Marsh and Lee Chapman came in and kick-started our season. But the QPR defeat some 20 years on still sits uncomfortably with me and in true West Ham style we bought Les Ferdinand some 10 years later in attempt to avoid relegation………it did not work!

Now the other performance which stands out for me is from a more obvious team, Manchester United. They visited the Boleyn on 16 March 2002, we were sitting comfortably in mid-table, this despite Glenn Roeder being manager! Our starting 11 was useful with Carrick, Cole, Di Canio and Kanoute all starting. United were strong, Beckham, Scholes, Keane, van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer were all playing. The game was a thriller, proper end to end stuff and we led twice with goals from Lomas and Kanoute, however, despite how good we were, United were different gravy that day and went onto win the game 5-3! Now say what you like about Beckham, but if you strip away all the PR, he was a very good footballer and in this game he was a different gear, scoring two goals, one a delightful chip which beat David James all ends up! Roy Keane was still in his prime, a proper midfielder, while Scholes knocked the ball about without any fuss, again another proper midfielder. We were great on the day and gave United a real game of football, but their extra class in the end was the deciding factor.

With regards individual performances I was very impressed with Ruud Gullit who was the star man in a very average Chelsea team in the mid 1990’s. Chelsea won at our place on the night Julian Dicks accidently landed on John Spencer’s head, but Gullit was the best player on the pitch by a country mile, a real joy to watch, he made the game look simple and carried an average Chelsea side who at the time were an also ran Premier League team.

The other player I remember impressing me was Matthew Le Tissier. Southampton came to us on the last day of the season and I believe they needed a point to avoid relegation, I could be wrong here. Now I am sure plenty of Saint fans will agree that Le Tissier was a bit of a one man team at times and I am sure we all agree that he was a top notch player. He was on fire in this game, despite our fans continually chanting “Big nose he’s got a ****ing big nose”, which in all fairness he took in good jest! He scored a stunning free kick in front in front of the old North Bank and this shut us all up and he then went on to get an assist as the game finished 3-3. I always found Le Tissier great to watch and I admired his loyalty to the Saints, however, the argument could be that he lacked ambition, I don’t buy that argument and I feel the game is lacking badly in this regard now.

To be honest no other individual performance or players stand out, yes, I have since us beaten many times by better teams but more often than not this is due to us being utter rubbish and these teams simply had to turn up and win!

Last season is fresher in the memory and the two players that stand out are first the obvious one, this being Gareth Bale, he was superb in both games against us, in particular at our place, the pain of his last minute winner is still very raw. The other stand out player for me was Santi Cazorla, when Arsenal came to our place. What a player, great technique, balance, passing and to cap it all he scored a pretty good goal.

But I go to watch West Ham players, these are the ones that excite me and will continue to excite me and long may this continue, now let’s hope Gareth Bale does head to Madrid as I don’t fancy seeing him tearing us apart again.
