Class act: Carroll

ANDY CARROLL SUM IS NO PROBLEM

Matt Jarvis reckons Andy Carroll has learned from his Anfield hell – and won’t buckle under the pressure of yet another big-money move

Carroll, 24, choked when forced to wear the record- signing label around his neck at Liverpool – but Jarvis is convinced the giant 6ft 3ins striker will cope with the burden at Upton Park.

The England front man cost the Hammers £19million when he signed a permanent six-year-deal last month – after an initial year on loan in east London.

And Jarvis (right) the club’s previous record buy at £7.5m, said: “I had the pressure of being our most expensive player all last year.

“That did have a hold on me – but that won’t be an issue for Andy. Firstly, this is an easy club to settle into.

“Secondly, Andy isn’t a new player as such. He has already had a year on loan here so he knows the place inside out.

“And that is the kind of advantage that can fill you with confidence after a move like this.

“Thirdly, he is an experienced man. He had the same burden at Liverpool that he has to deal with now. That was a huge learning experience.

“For us, he has already proved to be a massive player – and I’ve no doubt he will have a major impact this year.”

So much so that Jarvis is tipping the Hammers to have their best season since 1980 – and use Wigan’s FA Cup triumph as their inspiration to end their 33 years of hurt. He said: “What Wigan did in beating Manchester City to lift the FA Cup has made clubs like us realise it can be done now – that trophies are not the preserve of the so-called big boys.

“Our first aim will be to go on a winning spree in the Premier League so that when the cup competitions come around, we will be able to hit the ground running.

“We have ambitious players here. There isn’t one of us who does not want to win a trophy.”

And silverware is not the only accolade that Middlesbrough-born Jarvis, 27, wants to win.

Having made his England debut two years ago against Ghana – the former Wolves winger is determined to leave the one-cap-wonder club.

He said: “Like any player, as soon as you get one cap, you want to get another.

“I have not given up on getting back in there. Last year, I worked extremely hard to get myself back in the frame and, hopefully, I can kick on again.

“If there is one thing you are guaranteed from me, it is hard work.

“I’ll give myself every chance.”

West Ham stars monkey around at wildlife park

PREMIERSHIP side West Ham 'went wild' in an Irish wildlife park in aid of an autism charity.

Football stars including Joe Cole, Kevin Nolan and Joey O'Brien got into the spirit of the occasion as they joked with Fota Wildlife staff and a selection of animals as they met with Cork Association for Autism (CAA) officials.

The charity is the major beneficiary of West Ham's pre-season friendly against Cork City tomorrow.

Fota's wardens showed the footballers their first team line up – giraffes, zebra and ostriches – before the squad headed to the cheetah enclosure.

Stars James Tomkins and Jack Collison were among those to meet the charity officials.

Collison, a West Ham academy graduate, said he was delighted with their Irish trip and the Fota visit.

"Pre-season has started off well over in Ireland and we've also come out to socialise with the public and the wildlife," he said.

"It is nice to take a little bit of time off because we have started off working quite hard," he added.

Wilfried-BonyWilfried Bony has been the subject to most of West Ham’s recent transfer news. But, what is actually going on with the striker?

It recently became known that we had officially submitted a £10.2 million for Bony not long after he seemed destined to join Swansea. However, Vitesse rejected our bid straight away. Bony had always made it very clear that a move to London was at the top of his list and considering West Ham were the only team in for him, it looked as though we were certainly in the driving seat.

Swansea however were the first team to officially submit a bid for the striker and Bony seemed to completely change. He went from wanting a move to London to saying that he would love a move to Swansea and their style of football would suit him best. Judging by this, you can quite clearly tell that Bony isn’t too bothered where he ends up, just as long as it’s in the Premier League. He has been trying to push a move through to the Premier League all summer.

It’s been said that the reason West Ham’s bid was rejected by Vitesse was because we were only offering to pay the fee for Bony in installments, where as Vitesse wanted the full amount paid upfront. It has also been said though that we are set to re-bid for Bony.

We have to look at what Bony wants and decide who has the advantage. Bony has made it clear on many occasions that he wants to play European football, something that Swansea can offer him where as we can’t. But, how long are Swansea going to be in Europe for? They are only in there because they won the Capital One Cup, something I can’t see them repeating next season.

On the other hand, West Ham seem to have a much better future planned out ahead of them and they seem to be able to offer Bony the wages he wants. If Bony is looking at the move to the Premier League long term, then it would only make sense to join us. We finished on the same points, as Swansea last season don’t forget.

I have the feeling that this Bony saga could drag out for a fair few weeks. These days, transfers are never easy, especially with how much the player’s agents get involved now. Bony could join anyone at the moment and I wouldn’t be surprised if a completely new club came in for him. However, there is no denying that Swansea are in the driving seat.

BIG SHAM ... Allardyce has got it wrong

Football is not a results business

FOOTBALL is a funny old game. Everyone soon got bored having that rammed down their throats didn’t they.

But it is now an industry in which there are more cliches than £50 notes — and I should know I’ve written most of them.

Yet the one which is still to be outlawed is the ridiculous claim that football is a ‘results’ business. At first glance you think that’s blindingly obvious, like most of the soundbites trotted out in soccer’s sterile environment.

However it is WRONG. And for that we should be grateful as it offers a shred of hope that our game hasn’t gone completely to the dogs.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce never tires of it and for him and other managers it is a results business. Lose half a dozen games and the noose will tighten around his neck with his head on the block.

But for more people than not, football is anything but a results business.

I have a lot of friends who support West Ham United. For them, at best the result is the last thing on their minds in the build up to the match.

At worst it is something usually discussed in a semi comatosed fashion after a couple of hours in the pub.

A pal who supports Coventry actually dreads what looms come kick-off for his beloved Sky Blues. And who can blame him?

But he has been moaning for years but still going for years and will still go for many more to come.

Because for most people football is still a source of entertainment, in its loosest form of course and for the first (and last) time ever I have done a simple bit of research to prove it.

We all know that Queens Park Rangers is a wonky old club. But would you believe that last season’s attendances were actually UP on the year before?

Yep. The year QPR lost the battle to stay in Premier League dreamland more people went to see them.

Not by much because Loftus Road is small but on average 17,740 punters turned up to be subjected to utter misery, punished for their loyalty instead of celebrated.

The year before 17,328 regularly gathered to watch their team bask in the glow of promotion from the Championship.

Attendances at Aston Villa increased by 1,187 over 12 months, around 500 more every other week at Sunderland. Crowds at Fulham, Wigan, Norwich and Newcastle all up. And please remind me what they won.

All this in the middle of a dragging recession when tickets are considered out of reach for the ordinary working man.

If results were all that mattered, Manchester United would get crowds of 1,000,000 and most other grounds would be empty.

QPR boss Harold Redwanker is one of the few managers who appreciates the value of entertainment at football next to winning.

This of course is the man who stormed off home and told a shocked Mrs R that Christmas was over after Portsmouth lost at home one Boxing Day.

But catch him in a reflective moment and Redknapp will purr about exciting players and the importance of laying on a good show for the fans who want to see their team win but for whom it is not the winning that counts — not even the taking part.

Sometimes just turning up IS enough.

Are West Ham A ‘Yo-Yo’ Club?

Soccer - npower Football League Championship - Play Off - Final - Blackpool v West Ham United - Wembley StadiumI recently put a friendship to the test during an argument over football. In fact, we are still not speaking, and that’s probably the reason I gave the subject some more thought.

The crux of the issue was that that he firmly believes West Ham is a yo-yo club, and I firmly do not.

The friend in question, a Crystal Palace fan, is still basking in the glory of their promotion back into the Premier League. I have no strong rivalry towards Palace, but a slur against my team from someone whose own club is generally considered to have a lower status, certainly got my back up.

If the yo-yo analogy had come from a supporter of a perpetually successful team, it may have carried more clout, although I would have remained perturbed. My honest feeling remains that we cannot be branded as such, because we have too much history in the top flight of English football.

A yo-yo club is one that has regularly switches between the leagues, without ever forming an identity as a force in any. Teams like Bolton, Norwich and Birmingham have occupied the position of being strong in the Championship, but not up to the levels of the Premiership.

Admittedly, in recent years we have failed to find the stability to establish ourselves in the top half of the Premiership.

But I believe we are a Premier League club that reluctantly visits our Championship cousins when we have been naughty.

I see West Ham as a genuine top ten English Club with mixed fortunes, strong history, thriving culture and a dedicated world-wide fan base.

Form changes with the players on the pitch and the coaching staff off it, but what confirms a club’s longer term status is the infrastructure and resources it has to hand, alongside that history.

Since the Premier League started in 1992, we have been in the lower division three times, for four years in total. We finished second in Division One in 92-93 to earn promotion, and have only been relegated on two other occasions.

In the all-time Premier League table, we sit 11th, well clear of Leeds in 12th and having played more games than Manchester City in the division.

We are 22nd in all top flight attendances out of the 45 teams to have played in the 21 seasons.

Those are not the statistics of a team that has yo-yoed between the leagues, nor represents a club frequently on the slide in terms of overall status.

All I need now is for West Ham to avoid the dreaded second season syndrome, followed by a call from my mate apologising.
