Hot Spur: Parker's Filth days may be coming to an end, but he's in demand

West Ham want Scott Parker back from Tottenham but QPR are determined to win the race

Tony Fernandes is leading Queens Park Rangers into the battle for Scott Parker's signature - but faces opposition from West Ham.

QPR supremo Fernandes is personally involved in trying to back manager Harold Redwanker's move for Tottenham and England midfielder Parker.

West Ham are among the other clubs interested and Parker, still highly regarded at 32, is keen to stay in London.

However, while the Hammers can only stretch to taking him on loan, relegated Rangers are prepared to pay a fee to Spurs for Parker's services.

And Loftus Road chief Fernandes is trying hard to see off the competition ahead of next month's Championship kick-off.

Parker is considering his options, following last week's £17million arrival of Brazilian Confederations Cup hero Paulinho.

The signing of the 24-year-old midfielder from Corinthians has pushed Parker down to fourth choice at White s hit Lane.

Redwanker, who signed him from West Ham two years ago, remains a fan of Parker's leadership qualities and see him as the player to spearhead the club's efforts for a quick return to the Premier League.

The move for Parker has only come about after concerns expressed behind the scenes at Loftus Road over Tottenham's possible demand for a transfer fee combined with Parker's £70,000-a-week wages.

QPR chief executive Phil Beard vetoed a move for another 32-year-old England international, left-back Wayne Bridge, on the basis that the package to sign him was too expensive.

But Parker is seen as a player still very much capable of competing at the top level, and Redknapp has convinced Fernandes that the former Charlton man can lead the club back into the big time.

Time to celebrate: The victory was a comfortable one for West Ham

Cole targets West Ham silverware after seeing new signings in action in 3-0 win over Boreham Wood

After playing in West Ham's 3-0 win over Boreham Wood on Wednesday, Joe Cole has targeted taking West Ham to Wembley and challenging for silverware.

The Hammers, featuring new signings Adrian, Ravzan Rat and Danny Whitehead, comfortably won at Meadow Park thanks to goals from Ravel Morrison, Ricardo Vaz Te and Kevin Nolan.

And now Cole, 31, who returned to his boyhood club in January after he failed to nail down a place at Liverpool, wants to see the club improve on last season's top-10 finish and collect a winners' medal along the way.

'I think the ambition of the club at the moment is improvement,' he said.

'But for me personally, I would love to finish better than 10th but I would love to take this club to Wembley because at the end of the day they are the days you remember in your career - it would be a massive achievement.

'You look at Swansea and Wigan last year and that is their day, we would like a bit of that because it has been such a long time since West Ham have been there, so that would be nice.'

Sam Allardyce led the Hammers to 10th on their return to the Barclays Premier League and has already added to his squad ahead of the new campaign.

The stand-out signings are those of Andy Carroll, who spent last season on loan at West Ham from Liverpool, and Romania captain Rat - brought in on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Cole believes the calibre of such players proves that West Ham are able to attract big names.

'It is a boost for the club and shows where we are going,' he added.

'Andy Carroll is a young, England centre-forward and clubs do not usually sell them and he is a big talent. He did a good job and we just want him to get fit and come back because he is a big part of our team.

'West Ham is a big club but it has been starved of success. You look at where we are in London and people want to come here and play in London and play for West Ham.

'It is great that players like Razvan and Andy are coming in and hopefully there will be a few more as well.'

The former Chelsea ace has had his fair share of injury problems in recent years and admits his first aim for the forthcoming season is to play as often as possible and even maybe attract the attention of England manager Roy Hodgson.

'I always keep my goals to myself and take it day-by-day but I just want to keep fit first and foremost,' said Cole.

'When I was fit last season my performances were good so the key for me is just staying fit and if I do that, the football for me has never been a problem.

'The ambition will always burn every time you go out on the football pitch and you want to do well, if you're an Englishman and you're playing well you are inevitably going to be talked about.

'I have played over 50 times for my country so if I can get playing you never know but at the moment I'm just concentrating on West Ham.'

Morrison tapped home on 20 minutes after Boreham Wood goalkeeper James Russell had made a sprawling save to prevent Rat's deflected cross creeping in.

The second came just moments later as Vaz Te headed home after a short-corner routine but, despite the visitors dominating for large periods, they did not add to their lead until skipper Nolan volleyed home with just under 10 minutes remaining.

West Ham are confident Andy Carroll will be fit for the start of the season.

West Ham officials are confident that England international Andy Carroll will be fighting fit for the start of the Premier League season.

GettyImagesWest Ham are confident Andy Carroll will be fit for the start of the season.

The 24-year-old completed a permanent move to Upton Park from Liverpool last month after leading the line for the Hammers last season while on loan from the Anfield club.

However, a heel injury has so far kept the club's record signing out of manager Sam Allardyce's pre-season squads, restricted to the training paddock as he continues his recovery.

But despite fears Carroll's injury may interrupt his preparations for the new season, assistant manager Neil McDonald was confident there was enough time to return the striker to the head of the attack.

"He is well under way in his rehab, he is working hard on the training ground and we just have to be a little bit patient," McDonald told Sky Sports.

"The injury that he has is quite extensive and it takes time for the body to heal itself. He is doing everything he can to push on.

"He has been working really hard and there is still plenty of time for him to get himself fit for the start of the season."

However, West Ham may not need to rely solely on Carroll's goals to shoot the club up the ladder, with McDonald confirming the club are still in the market to strengthen the squad.

"The manager and the hierarchy are working very hard behind the scenes to strengthen the team even more," he said.

"If we can bring one or two others in to give competition for places we will be in a really good place come the 17th of August."

West Ham Value Stewart Downing But Have No Intention of Bidding for Liverpool Winger

West Ham United’s assistant manager Neil McDonald has said that though he thinks highly of Stewart Downing he has sought to distance the club from any transfer talk concerning the two, Sky Sports reports.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the Hammers were looking to bring the Liverpool man down to east London to pair him up with fellow former Liverpool player Andy Carroll.

Downing has struggled for form and found himself in and out of the Liverpool side since completing his £20 million move from Aston Villa in 2011 and has finally started to be linked with a move away from Anfield.

The 28-year-old made 25 starts and four substitute appearances for the Reds in the Premier League last season, scoring three goals and claiming five assists – a considerably much better return than no goals or assists in 36 appearances the campaign before.

The Hammers are known to be in the market for wide players to provide a supply line for Carroll, who has now joined the club on a permanent basis.

And though Sam Allardyce’s right hand man, McDonald, is a fan of the 28-year-old, and would like the opportunity to work with him, he has admitted that and talk of a move is nothing but premature.

“He’s a very good player,” he said. “A player of that calibre and West Ham being involved would be great, but it’s all paper talk at the moment.”

Is it time for West Ham to stop calling themselves the ‘Academy of Football’?

Academy Of FootballOne of the great virtues of supporting a club like West Ham is the history, culture and tradition that goes with it.

The bond that develops comes not only from the current crop of players who turn out on a Saturday, but from those who played in bygone eras, achieved success, and represented a brand that was entrenched in the community from which it grew.

It was back in the 1960s that West Ham was first termed the ‘Academy of Football’. Many accept that it was a tribute designed to praise the philosophy and overall culture of the club, developed at that time by Ron Greenwood.

Home-grown players included the greats such as Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst. But more than just the players, it was the style and artistry that went with the performances which won such affection from observers.

Over the years, ‘The Academy’ has referenced more the youth set-up at the club, which nurtures the best talent, capable of playing ‘the West Ham way’ at the very highest level.

That youth mechanism working through the club has been somewhat maligned recently, and to some extent it is justified.

The departure of Rob Hall this summer further pressed the question about when the next student is going to graduate from the East London schooling onto the world stage.

I wrote the other week about the dearth of top class talent coming through the ranks. But it was pointed out to me that the classes of the 60s and early 00s cannot be expected to come through on a wholly regular basis.

Many clubs across the board are showing a shortage of high-class, young, talent. The reality can be seen in the majority of recent England international line-ups.

The fact West Ham is not currently quite the production machine and feeder club it has been in the past, does not detract from the glowing reports it has achieved in the past.

A reputation is forged from many years of dedication to a method, a way of thinking and playing, that is not wiped away by a more barren period. It is not something one manager, or one group of players, can change in just a few seasons of the modern game.

The honourable branding as the ‘Academy of Football’ should not be forgotten by wider football fans in general, as it has given so much to the sport.

Therefore, it is certainly not something the club should stop calling themselves. We as fans are rightly proud of our heritage, and here in Australia, it is that reputation which distinguishes our supporters from those apparent glory hunters with allegiances the ‘powerhouses’ of the modern game.

‘The Academy’ values are ingrained in the claret and blue, and there are enough true Hammers fans who remain associated with the club to never allow them to be forgotten.

DOUGIE FREEDMAN is sending Gary Fraser straight out on loan after finally luring him to Bolton.

The midfielder, 19, chose to stay at Hamilton despite passing a medical at the Reebok in January.

But having now switched he will spend a year at Partick Thistle.

FULHAM boss Martin Jol will need £10million to land Dnipro winger Evgen Konoployanka.

Norwich are also interested in the 23-year-old Ukrainian.

Konoployanka’s agent Barry O’Connor said: “Many clubs know what Evgen can offer.”

CHRIS HUGHTON has landed Martin Olsson, 25, from Blackburn on a four-year deal.

The Norwich boss said: “We are delighted with the addition of Martin.

The centre-half, 30, shattered his knee a year ago and boss Nigel Clough said: “He’s seen a specialist, but may not make it this season.

Let’s hope we see him but there’ll be no pressure from us.”

ARGENTINIAN full-back Gino Peruzzi is set to complete his move to Sunderland today.

It is a boost for boss Paolo Di Canio after a deal for the 21- year-old stalled earlier this week.

UNSETTLED centre-back Fabricio Coloccini, 31, will return to Newcastle next week according to boss Alan Pardew.

He said: “Colo wants to come back, he wants to lead us.”

NORWICH striker Simeon Jackson, 26, has joined Bournemouth on a free transfer.

MOHAMMED RABIU wants out of French side Evian to join Martin Jol at Fulham.

The Ghana midfielder, 23, said: “Fulham have a good manager.”

NEWCASTLE have failed with a £1.75m bid for PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch keeper Jeroen Zoet.

The Eredivisie outfit want £3m for the 22-year-old.

KEVIN DAVIES insists the only way is up after dropping down to join League One Preston.

Released by Bolton, the front man, 36, said: “I would not have done it if I didn’t think we would get promotion.”

SWANSEA will have to fork out at least £4million for target Wakaso Mubarak, 22, from Espanyol.

The Spanish club have rejected a £3.9m bid from a European side for the Ghana ace.

JEROME THOMAS has joined Ian Holloway’s Crystal Palace for free. The winger, 30, signed a two-year deal having left West Brom. He said: “Ollie’s the main factor but there’s a lot of talent here.”

BOSS Tony Mowbray says Middlesbrough cannot afford to bring David Wheater back from Bolton.
