KEVIN NOLAN and James Collison struck as West Ham saw off Championship new-boys Bournemouth.

Skipper Nolan broke the deadlock early on in Stephen Purches’ testimonial at Dean Court.

And Collison struck a controversial second just before the break to give Sam Allardyce’s men an easy friendly win.

Nolan used his loaf to put the Hammers ahead when he nodded home Guy Demel’s ninth-minute cross.

Collison then put the game safe — but the Cherries felt hard-done by after seeing a free-kick shout fall on deaf ears.

Modibo Maiga initially lost the ball on the touchline but won it back off Steve Cook.

Bournemouth wanted a foul but play was waved on and Maiga freed Collison to round keeper Darryl Flahavan.

Former Spurs star and Cherries icon Darren Anderton was given a late run-out in the match, to celebrate Purches’ decade at the club.

Bournemouth 0 West Ham 2: Nolan and Collison net as Hammers squash Cherries

Kevin Nolan scored the opener before going off injured in what was a straight-forward 2-0 pre-season friendly win for West Ham over Bournemouth.

The win, which is the Hammers’ third pre-season victory in a row, saw Sam Allardyce’s men take the lead early on through a Nolan header before Jack Collison tapped in the second.

But the West Ham manager’s main concern after the testimonial match for Cherries legend Stephen Purches, will be the knock to inspirational skipper Nolan.

The midfielder looked to have injured his knee in an innocuous challenge with Harry Arter on the 52nd minute before making way straight after.

Bournemouth’s box to box midfielder Arter had the first shot in anger after three minutes but veteran keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen pulled off a flying save to tip the pile driver around the post.

In-demand Jack Collison then missed a clear one-on-one opportunity before the opener came on eight minutes.

Right-back Guy Demel swung in a pin point cross to pick out Nolan to nod home unmarked.

The Upton Park club looked in control throughout the first-half and had chances to extend their lead through Nolan and winger Matt Jarvis before they doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time.

It was Collison who finally got his goal, rounding a stranded Darryl Flahavan after Bournemouth defender Steve Cook had been caught in possession.

The south-coast club, who entertain Real Madrid next week, came out of the blocks quickly in the second period and Wes Thomas should have netted on the 46th minute but shot wide.

Fellow sub Charlie Daniels provided the closest thing to a Cherries goal when his left-foot drive after 65 minutes cannoned into the side-netting.

Not even a flurry of substitutes after the break could help Eddie Howe’s men pull a goal back.

Modibo Maiga, playing in the centre forward role in the absence of star striker Andy Carroll, looked a threat and fired a free header wide before miscuing a golden opportunity on 71 minutes.

The clean-through Malian broke free from the Bournemouth back line but saw his lobbed effort cannon back off the post across the goal line before being cleared.

Bournemouth hero Purches, who grew up in the West Ham youth team alongside the likes of Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole, joined the action on 67 minutes to a standing ovation and was joined late on by other club greats Darren Anderton and Steve Fletcher.

Jack Collison tapped in the second for the Hammers in this testimonial match to honour Bournemouth’s Stephen Purches.

Former Tottenham and England star Darren Anderton, who finished his career at Bournemouth, came on for the Cherries late on.

Bournemouth mad

AFC Bournemouth 0-2 West Ham United Att: 7080

A fine turn out showed respect to Stephen Purches as a crowd in excess of 7000 came out to celebrate a fine career.

On a hot and sultry day at Dean Court, this was never going to a classic pre-season match given the conditions and numerours breaks to take on liquid by all concered. That said, it was the Cherries to started the brighter, kicking towards the new stand, as the home side looked to test Jaaskelainen in the Hammers goal.

First to shot goal wards was Grabban. Sadly his shot lacked power and conviction to test the Hammers keeper, that after neat build up play involving Pitman. Arter was next to try, as Jaaskelainen parried the ball away.

Despite early Cherries pressure, first blood went to West Ham after a towering Kevin Nolan header was unchallenged, leaving Flahaven stranded after 9 minutes.

Just before the half hour mark, the lively MacDermott (it's nice to see him back in full flow again), won a free kick after he was unended not too far outside the area. Sadly the resulting free kick cannoned off the wall from Ian Harte and to safety.

Another to impress, Ryan Fraser, looked lively down the left wing. He was presented with an excellent shooting opportunity, only to be dispossessed at the key moment when a shot looked on. Moments later Pitman was well wide with a header.

A moment of controversy came in first half stoppage time when Cook appeared to pick up a knock in the face, play continued (why? given that the ref stopped play for all similar knocks), which saw Collison to put in to an unguarded net, even though it seemed clear to many in the East Stand that the players concerned were clesrly off side.

The second half saw the first of a string of changes, one of which saw Wes Thomas introduced to the match. His first opportunity, was a clear goal scoring opportunity, which he inexplicably managed to out well wide of the mark. His stance was so wrong in trying to score with his right foot from the position he was in. In this reporters humble opinion, why is Thomas still allowed to wear a Cherries shirt?

The best chances for the Cherries in the second period came courtesy of Charlie Daniels. The first came in the 65th minute when a lovely ball from Grabban set up a shooting opportunity, which Daniels fired in to the side netting. The second came 6 minutes later when a curling free kick was narrowly wide of the target.

Mention in this report for 16-year-old Sam Matthews who was a breath of fresh air when he came on in the 59th minute. He touch and control against much bigger Premiership opposition was most impressive.

Mention too for Wes Fogden who gave it his all at right back - an interesting conversion if ever there was one.

Stephen Purches got a standing ovation when he was introduce to the game in the 67th minute, as did the likes of Darren Anderton and Cherries legend Steve Fletcher.

Okay, the Cherries lost by two goals, but the matched demonstrated that we can play against higher league opposition and retain decent possession. Where we lost out was using that possession to create clear cut chances which were going to hurt the opposition. Okay, West Ham are Premiership, but at times, the Cherries were slow in their approach play. We will need to be more incisive when the season kicks off on August 3rd. That said we're not going to be playing Premiership opposition every week. I also believe we need something extra up front and in midfield. In Eddie we Trust!

West Ham boss Allardyce tempted by Engelaar

The Netherlands international featured for the Hammers in the victory over Bournemouth and the 58-year-old says he is considering signing him up

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce will consider whether to offer trialist Orlando Engelaar a contract over the coming days.

The 33-year-old Netherlands international is training with the club and featured as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 pre-season win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Engelaar has been capped 14 times during a career that has seen him represent NAC Breda, Racing Genk, Twente, Schalke and PSV.

He was released by the Eredivisie runners-up at the end of last season and Allardyce will now consider whether to take him on a more permanent basis.

"A player of his experience and his quality, we'll have him with us for a few days to see if he could be a valuable member of our team," he told West Ham TV.

"We'll obviously make that decision in the near future."

West Ham Close In On £5m Deal For Inter Milan Midfielder Zdravko

Serbian set for Upton Park move.

West Ham have opened talks over a £5million deal to sign Inter Milan midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic, reports the Metro.

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is eyeing bargain deals for the remainder of the summer, having spent the bulk of his transfer budget on Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll, who signed in a £15million deal last month. Inter Milan are reportedly considering selling Kuzmanovic this summer, just six months after he joined the club.

Having joined in January from German side Stuttgart, the 25-year old midfielder has made a string of disappointing appearances for Inter, and manager Walter Marazzi is willing to part company with the Serbian, with Allardyce weighing up a £5million offer for him. The Irons are willing to go as high as £5million for the midfielder, but will throw up a season-long loan option for him.

In search of more midfield options, Allardyce has identified Bolton’s Stuart Holden and Wigan’s James McCarthy as potential additions this summer, as well as bringing ex- Schalke and FC Twente midfielder Orlando Engelaar on trial, following his release from PSV this summer. Kuzmanovic will reportedly be offered a four-year contract, and will become one of the highest earners at the club.

The Hammers are also set to complete the £6.7million signing of Estudiantes striker Duvan Zapata in the coming weeks. The 22-year old Colombian forward, formerly a target of AS Roma, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund, had his release clause triggered in his contract, and has agreed personal terms with the club. The club are awaiting the response for a work permit application, allowing Zapata to join the club soon.

Cheers, CH.

I think we should be wary of Kuzmanovic: he didn't do well at Stuttgart either. Loan might pay off, but transfer too risky.

Cheers CH ~ Sorry to hear of your problematical neighbours, they can make your life misery at times.

I hope we sign Kusmanovic. Whenever, I have seen him on the box for Inter, he has always struck me as a no nonsense type of player. Unspectacular, but does the simple things and does them well. Intercepts the ball through intelligent reading of the game, breaks up play and just distributes the ball. The sort of player, I think, we need. Players like this are just as vital to winning football matches as any striker.

Cole hails new signing

West Ham United midfielder Joe Cole has publicly praised the signing of striker Andy Carroll on a permanent basis. The former Liverpool striker spent last season on loan at West Ham, but this summer finally sealed a permanent move to Upton Park. Cole, a former Liverpool player himself, has hailed the signing, suggesting that it shows the direction and ambition of the Hammers.

“It is a boost for the club and shows where we are going,” Cole told the club’s official website in an interview. “Andy Carroll is a young, England centre-forward and clubs do not usually sell them. He’s a big talent. He did a good job and we just want him to get fit and come back because he is a big part of our team.”

West Ham found themselves in the middle of the pack in the Premier League last season, finishing in tenth place. Andy Carroll clearly impressed enough during last season’s campaign to warrant his move this summer, as the England international picked up seven Premier League goals and four assists in his 26 league appearances for the Hammers.

Joe Cole and his teammates will be hoping for a quick start to their new Premier League season, with three win-able fixtures at the beginning of their season. They open the new season at home against Premier League newcomers Cardiff City before taking on Newcastle United and Stoke City before the end of August and the close of the transfer window.

West Ham Waiting On Work Permit Application To Sign Striker Duvan Zapata

Upton Park side look to complete deal to sign Colombian ace.

West Ham have sent off a work permit application as they look to finalise a deal to sign Estudiantes striker Duvan Zapata, according to Sky Sports.

The Hammers agreed to meet the release clause of the Colombian striker, believed to be around £6.7million, and the Argentine club have allowed Zapata to hold talks with the East London club ahead of a move. It’s understood the player and club have agreed a long-term deal, and are now awaiting a response to a work permit hearing for his transfer.

The 22-year old forward is eager to secure his ‘dream move’ to the Premier League, after snubbing interest from Italy, Portugal and Germany, with Napoli, Porto and Borussia Dortmund all reportedly interested in the young star. West Ham are hopeful of securing the work permit for the striker, under the ‘special talent’ ruling, and have lined up numerous high-profile figures in world football to vouch for their case.

The Hammers are in desperate need of another striker, with only ineffective Malian striker Modibo Maiga, and new signing Andy Carroll on their books, following the releases of Carlton Cole and Robert Hall. Zapata is known for his tremendous strength in and around the box and compsed finishing, two key assets to the Sam Allardyce style of football.

The club attempted to bring in highly-rated Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku on loan to the club, but the Belgian rejected the chance to go out on loan again. The Irons are also said to be interested in a number of forwards as they look to strengthen, with Demba Ba, Gary Hooper and Javier Saviola all being considered
