HOT STEW ... Liverpool ace Downing
We can’t Hammer out Downing deal
SAM ALLARDYCE has ruled out a move for Stewart Downing — because he’s too expensive.
The West Ham boss was keen to link up Downing with his old Liverpool team-mate Andy Carroll, who left Anfield to sign a permanent deal at Upton Park earlier this summer.
But Allardyce has given hope of adding the England winger to his ranks as he is out of the Hammers’ price range.
He said: “I wouldn’t have thought that we could afford Stewart, unfortunately.”
The former Newcastle manager is hopeful of completing a move for Colombian striker Duvan Zapata, however.
He explained: “It’s whether we think we can get the work permit through, that’s the only thing.
“Based on the fact that he’s not a full international, we would have to go to a hearing.
“We’d have to decide in the next 24 hours whether — on our part or the player’s part — that would be worth doing.”
Allardyce has also confirmed the club have no interest in signing West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans.
Staying put: Stewart Downing has moved to quell speculation of a move to West Ham as Liverpool touched down in Jakarta on the first leg of their pre-season tour
Downing turns down West Ham switch to fight for place at Liverpool as Reds touch down in Jakarta on pre-season tour
Stewart Downing has vowed to fight for his Liverpool future after making clear his intentions to stay at Anfield.
West Ham followed up an initial enquiry at the end of last season by approaching Liverpool earlier this month to discuss Downing's possible transfer but the winger is not prepared to consider a move to Upton Park.
Downing's two-year spell on Merseyside has been riddled with speculation about him moving on but he has spoken with manager Brendan Rodgers and received assurances the club are not actively trying to sell him.
Liverpool were greeted by a hundreds of supporters when they arrived here in Jakarta today and among the many banners that were unfurled at the airport was one which struck a chord with Downing: it simply read "SD19 Don't go!"
Things were a little quieter after Liverpool arrived at the national stadium, where they will play an Indonesian XI on Saturday, to stretch their legs following an 18-hour flight and after completing a couple of laps of the pitch, Downing put forward his case.
'It's not something I am going to consider,' said Downing, when asked about West ham's interest. 'I think there have been a couple of rumours going around and maybe that's because I was told last season I could leave.
But I have spoken to the manager and he's told me that he's happy for me to stay.
'As far as I see it I'm here to play. He wants to build a squad and not dismantle it. I I'm not in the team and not playing that is a discussion we will have to have then but at the minute I have absolutely no reason to leave

Allardyce won't rush Carroll return as he targets September comeback
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce remains hopeful club record signing Andy Carroll could be in contention for a first-team return before the September international break - but insists the England striker must not be rushed back into action.
The Irons are set to head off to Germany to step up their pre-season schedule, which continued on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win at Colchester.
Carroll - who joined West Ham in a £15million deal from Liverpool following a successful loan spell last season - did not feature in the end-of-season England friendlies because of a heel injury, but will join up with the rest of the Hammers squad as his rehabilitation continues.
Were the 24-year-old 6ft 3in forward to be fully fit by the time the next set of crucial World Cup qualifiers come around at the start of September, Carroll could well be a key figure for national-team boss Roy Hodgson.
Allardyce, though, is determined to take things one step at a time with the Irons’ marquee summer signing.
'Andy is still recovering. He has got four weeks or more to go before he starts full training. His rehab is going pretty well at the moment and will be joining us in Germany, and hopefully he will be available, as will George McCarthy, as quickly as possible,' the West Ham manager said.
'I hope it will be before [September] for both of them, but being fit and being ready to play are two different things - they may be fit from the injury, but they are unlikely to be capable of playing straight away.
'If we are going to put our lads through six weeks of preparation and then Andy gets fit with two days to go, you would not expect us to play him, would you?”
Allardyce feels his squad are sharpening up nicely ahead of the new Barclays Premier League campaign after a fourth straight warm-up win, with goals from midfielder Joe Cole and defender James Collins at the start of each half. Colchester substitute Jabo Ibehre headed in a stoppage-time consolation for the League One side.
West Ham will have matches against Mainz and Hamburg during their German camp, as preparations increase for the first competitive action at home to newly promoted Cardiff on August 17.
'It was a good workout for us, because Colchester are a couple of weeks ahead of where we are with their season starting earlier, so you would expect we would get a physical game. Our only disappointment was conceding a goal in the last minute,' said Allardyce.
'The wins, draws or loses mean nothing to what the season will entail, whether you win them all or lose them all, it means nothing to what the first (league) game will be.'
Allardyce hopes to bring in “at least one more” new arrival before the transfer window closes.
West Ham are considering an appeal for a work permit for Colombian striker Duvan Zapata in a £6.8m deal from Argentinian side Estudiantes.
'It is whether we think we can get the work permit through, that is the problem,' said Allardyce.
'The fact he is not a full international would mean we have to go to a hearing, and we have to decide if that is worth doing, which we will decide in the next 24 hours, but we would like to (get him) if we could.'
West Ham set to miss out on Inter midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic
WEST HAM look to be disappointed in their pursuit of Inter's Zdravko
The Hammers had hoped to push ahead with a move for Kuzmanovic after Sam Allardyce admitted he liked the Serbian international but, according to reports in Italy, now look set to be trumped by Malaga.
Zdravko KuzmanovicZdravko Kuzmanovic has failed to impress at Inter
When asked about Kuzmanovic on Saturday, Allardyce said: "He is a player I like, but I know nothing about it so cannot comment."
Sam AllardyceSam Allardyce looks to have been thwarted in his bid to sign Zdravko Kuzmanovic
It was thought that a bid of about £5m may be enough to bring Kuzmanovic to east London.

Thanks for the news as usual. With regard to Downing, let him warm the bench until January when the Bin Dippers will offer him to us with a gross of car stereos as a sweetener...
