Out in the cold: But the heat remains on Sam Allardyce

Image
Disappointing: Andy Carroll hasn't produced the return on investment West Ham were after... yet

Sam Allardyce remains under pressure after owner writes-off painfully poor West Ham's season

Sam Allardyce plans to pick a weakened team against Spurs in the League Cup on Wednesday. But after watching this goalless draw West Ham fans will ask: ‘How can it get any weaker?’

On the day co-owner David Sullivan went public with his frustration and declared the season a “write-off” , the Hammers were painfully poor in their latest goalless draw.

Until the cavalry arrive in January – either a new striker or the return of Andy Carroll – Allardyce’s side simply do not look like scoring. With their best players Kevin Nolan and Stewart Downing also out, Saturday’s team made the Hammers side relegated in 2003 – including Joe Cole and Paolo Di Canio – look like Brazil in 1970.

And with Manchester United and Arsenal their next two Premier League opponents, the trip to White Hart Lane is looking daunting. Especially with Tottenham hurting from West Ham’s 3-0 win there in October.

“I have to try and get a team ready to get some points at Manchester United,” Allardyce said. “Our Premier League status is the most important thing at the club. The more important game for me, as much as I don’t like to say it, is Man U and getting points (rather than) Tottenham on Wednesday, based on the position in the league and the squad I have available at the moment.

“There won’t be any young players – that is one thing for sure – but there will be some players who haven’t played as much in the first team.”

Sullivan’s interview on BBC’s Football Focus was surprisingly timed but totally accurate. Carroll has not offered a return on his big investment. And although Sullivan insisted he was backing Allardyce, he added tellingly: “But let’s judge him at the end of the season.”

Allardyce chose his words carefully in response to the “write-off” comment, and effectively urged his boss to hold his nerve. “David is obviously in a position where he gets extremely anxious of the situation,” he said. “That’s the way he is as a person.

“The pressure comes on him as much as it does on me and everyone else. I think dealing with pressure is one thing you have to be capable of doing.

“And he can always say what he thinks because he is the owner. But it’s a big responsibility for us all and going into the new stadium, this club has to be in the Premier League.

“So we have to make sure we have a team capable of staying there. At the moment, we’re not quite there but I think that is down to the injured players and the players missing on a regular basis.

“Once we get them back and ready and back in the team and hopefully staying in the team, we will be OK.”

Sub Jack Collison admitted: “It’s frustrating for us as players. It’s not through a lack of effort and the fans have to know we are trying hard.”

Rising star: In the absence of Andy Carroll, Ravel Morrison has been asked to provide the creative spark for West Ham

Meet the enter-pain-ers! Big Andy is the new Santa Claus at Upton Park as they cling to hope of his return... but it promises to be a winter of discontent for unhappy Hammers

Their supporters crave a team of entertainers, they are being served the enter-pain-ers.

For in toiling toward a fifth goalless draw – football’s most arduous outcome – West Ham have now put their fans through more stalemates than the Bundesliga has endured in the entirety of its season.

It is a torturous task following the Hammers right now.

As Allardyce said in the wake of Saturday’s 0-0 against Sunderland, there are three teams worse off when league standings are considered, but if ever a statement was worthy of the ‘clutching at straws’ idiom then that was it.

The Boleyn boys are dining on a pretty drab diet at present, starved of offensive nourishment, occasionally thrown a bone when Ravel Morrison musters the gusto to attack the opposition.

Their seat at the top table of English football is in grave danger of relocation to the overcrowded buffet hall which is the Championship, where everyone scraps it out for the meal ticket back to the Premier League.

Andy Carroll is the great hope; for in East London, talk of his arrival in time for the festivities has surpassed the chatter of children in anticipation of Santa Claus – they both have a beard, at least.

The lunchtime comments of co-owner David Sullivan - ‘had we known he would be out for this long, we would not have signed him’ – did nothing to ease the pressure on Allardyce, or the player himself.

But the promise of a Christmas Carroll is a bum note, for it will take a helluva lot more than a half-fit forward to strike a chord with these disenchanted followers.

For Carroll, at present, is a convenient excuse for all.

Still smiling: Despite West Ham's position in the league, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll find something to smile about during their draw with Sunderland

Teams have long since been robbed of talismen and, to pin so much reliance on an injury-prone one at that, is surely a massive error of judgement.

His impending return coupled with the looming winter window is the rhetoric of refusal being delivered to West Ham fans right now; ‘it’ll all be okay’ is the message.

Indeed, Allardyce wrote in his programme notes: ‘What we have to work for is to pick up 14 points from eight games somewhere, and then we’ll be fine’.

To give Allardyce’s assertion some context, his side have taken six points from their last eight outings; they are far from fine.

Gus Poyet thought that for the first time under his care, Sunderland did not look like ‘the worst team in the division’.

What does that say for their hosts?

The visitors should have won given the balance of chances and West Ham were a little fortunate to escape with a point, one which leaves them one place clear of the relegation zone.

However, barring an injection of verve into both of these impotent offences in January, this could well be a fixture renewed in the second tier next season.

That West Ham supporters were momentarily stirred from their slumber by a centre-back - James Tomkins marauding 50 yards down the wing before winning a throw-in – is damning of their final-third limitations.

It was the back-office administrator breaking ranks having taken for too long the failings of his front-of-shop colleagues.

Midfielder Morrison was not attempting to deceive, but his flattery – delivered via a string of step-over laden blind-alley pursuits – was an illusion, for even had he come good on end product – which he did not – there were no takers willing to climax his trickery.

It all amounted to a foreboding sense of inevitability.

An inevitability that, for the ninth time this season, the game would expire without score for The Irons; another nought in the goals column, another cross against Allardyce’s name.

It is no fun following the East Londoners at present.

Carroll is the prescribed pain relief.

You get the feeling, however, it will take more than the Geordie frontman to remedy their ills.

Rather, a winter of discontent lies ahead for the unhappy Hammers.

Move: Allardyce is hoping to boost West Ham's attacking options

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce plotting January move for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert

Sam Allardyce is plotting a January raid for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert to fire West Ham to Premier League survival.

Hammers boss Allardyce made enquiries for England World Cup hopeful Lambert in the summer only to be told he was not for sale.

But Lambert has found himself second choice to Saints' record signing Dani Osvaldo and was dropped to the bench for the recent games against Chelsea and Manchester City.

Allardyce believes Lambert, 32 in February, could be the solution to his side's scoring problems that have seen them slump to the brink of the relegation places.

Lambert - who has four goals this season - is under contract at St Mary's until 2016 and has previously expressed a desire to finish his career at Saints.

Eye-watering stuff: Sam Allardyce watched his West Ham side play out a fifth goalless draw of the season and is now struggling to meet the club's end-of-year points targe

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce under pressure with time running out to meet club's end-of-year points target

Sam Allardyce faces an uphill battle to hit his West Ham United end-of-year points target. The club hierarchy set manager Allardyce and his team the target of taking six points from their final four games of the year.

An uninspiring draw with bottom-of-the-table Sunderland, which had been billed as a ‘cup final’ inside Upton Park, was enough to keep West Ham out of the relegation zone. But the Hammers must now take five points from games against Manchester United, Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion to achieve their goal.

West Ham co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold have so far been supportive of Allardyce and do not like to sack managers. But there is also an acceptance within the club that they cannot afford to stand by Allardyce unconditionally, in the same way they backed Avram Grant and were relegated in 2011.

West Ham will be acutely aware that all of their relegation rivals among the bottom five clubs have now changed their managers to try to change their fortunes.

Steve Clarke was sacked on Saturday night by West Bromwich, who followed the examples of Sunderland, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

West Ham are worried about the short-term and long-term effects of going down. The club have an ageing squad, scattered with big earners such as injured striker Andy Carroll, captain Kevin Nolan and summer signing Stewart Downing.

Manager also says he will pick fringe players for Wednesday's League Cup tie

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce on weak ground to fight David Sullivan’s claims

Manager also says he will pick fringe players for Wednesday's League Cup tie

Sam Allardyce is in no position to take issue with David Sullivan, an owner for whom the term quixotic could have been invented. The veneer of his acceptance as West Ham manager is so thin it is virtually translucent.

He is obliged to balance understandable resistance to Sullivan’s suggestion that West Ham’s season is a “write-off” with a practical assessment of the weaknesses of his case. There is justifiable doubt he will survive the season, let alone be around for the tenancy of the Olympic Stadium.

“David is in a position where he gets extremely anxious. It is the way he is as a person,” Allardyce acknowledged after a grim goalless draw against Sunderland which reinforced Sullivan’s acutely-timed questioning of the wisdom of placing inordinate faith in the haphazard fitness of Andy Carroll.

“The pressure comes on to him as much as it goes on to me. He looks after the football club. That is a huge commitment, going forward, and a big responsibility for us all. This club has to be in the Premier League, going into the Olympic Stadium. We have to make sure we sustain our place.”

When a club of West Ham’s limited horizons effectively sacrifice the chance of a League Cup semi-final place to prepare for a League visit to Old Trafford, the extent of the challenge becomes clear.

Allardyce confirmed his intention to select fringe players for Wednesday’s quarter-final tie against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. “We have to prepare to do what others have done, get points at Manchester United,” he said. “As much as I don’t like to admit it, that’s the more important game.”

The paucity of his attacking options also underlined the significance of next month’s transfer window. He is ready to extend his search for viable loanees to South America if his current sweep of the European market for an experienced striker is frustrated.

According to Allardyce, a foreign signing of appropriate quality will not countenance a move unless he is paid a “net” wage, to protect him from a tax burden. “That doubles the deal,” he admitted. “Most of the time that is beyond our financial capabilities.”

He was in no mood to appreciate the irony of the dilemma. West Ham might be guaranteed a new home, at questionable cost to the taxpayer, but in football, as in life, it is rare to get something for nothing. He might pay for his problems with his job.

West Ham have to stick with Sam Allardyce

Sam AllardyceThings are bad at the moment, the performance against Sunderland was shocking, they played the better football and created the better chances, we’re fed up with not scoring, we’re fed up with not winning…but we need to stick with Sam Allardyce.

I can understand how some fans want Sam gone but when the question is posed as to who can come in and do a better job these same fans can’t come up with a decent replacement, and no Roberto Di Matteo doesn’t count as a decent replacement; as before his stint as Chelsea boss his CV wasn’t too impressive and Chelsea don’t count! For the love of God Avram Grant the worst manager in our club’s history came within a penalty kick of winning the Champions League with them and that had nothing do to with his ability as a manager; it had everything do to with the star-studded squad he inherited.

So those want Sam out you’ve got to come up with a name with Premier League experience and could instantly change things…the only man I can think of who fits the bill is Harry Redknapp and for various reasons that is one managerial appointment that simply isn’t possible.

I’m greatly intrigued as to who West Bromwich Albion are going to appoint after Steve Clarke got the bullet, if they appoint Di Matteo after sacking him a couple of years ago then they’re a joke, if they appoint Martin Jol after he was axed from Fulham then they’re delusional.

The teams around us are all appointing new managers and it simply cannot work for them all, we’re in a desperate situation and yeah maybe if there was an outstanding candidate available I too would be pleading for a change, but they’re simply isn’t one.

I’m pleased the owners are bucking the trend of believing a new manager will automatically solve all our problems, especially when the pool of potential candidates is so poor. Our shot of getting out of the mess we’re in lies in the January transfer window; it lies in getting Stewart Downing, Winston Reid and Andy Carroll on the pitch.

I’ve lost a lot faith in Allardyce this season, we all have, but the list of potential replacements is so poor that we must stick with him till the season’s end and re-assess the situation in the sum

Sasquatch sighting at Upton Park: But where is Andy Carroll?

Amidst all the horror of yesterday’s insipid performance against lowly Sunderland, there was yet more terror for the Bubbles faithful to endure as the stadium was held to siege by the latest sighting of the ‘hairy man’ or Sasquatch as he is known to our North American friends.

Eyewitness accounts said that the creature made a brazen appearance, showing no fear even when approached by West Ham’s self-appointed ‘enforcer’, Kevin Nolan. Instead, the beast merely laughed off Nolan’s advances before tucking into a few of the tasty pies on offer at the stadium.

Scientists have suggested that these pies may have satisfied his legendary appetite for raw and uncooked meat and thus possibly saved dozens of human lives. He was later seen hobbling off back into the bush towards the rear of the Boleyn Pub, howling in pain and holding his stomach.

Observers have hailed the sighting as a major breakthrough for conspiracy theorists and other nutters who will undoubtedly take the opportunity to remind an easily terrified public about the variety of unsolved mysteries ranging from the Loch Ness Monster to the disappearance of ‘Lucky’ Lord Lucan.
However, with the century-spanning mystery regarding the existence of Bigfoot now solved, Hammers fans attentions will return to the pressing question of where their marque Summer striker signing – ‘Sorefoot’ has disappeared to as there have been no sightings of the highly paid superstar in action for months on end.

Top scientists have scoffed at suggestions that the striker’s return may be imminent as there have been no verifiable sightings apart from reports by over-excitable and tiresomely optimistic Hammers fans – all of whom were so easily duped by the original fables of his early-Summer capture.

Meanwhile, longstanding tormented Hammers fan Phil Gassybottom, landlord at the White Lion pub in Fobbing, Essex offered an intriguing insight into the nature of the Sasquatch / Andy Carroll link – “Has anyone considered that maybe they are one and the same person – I ask you; have you ever seen them together”?

West Ham defender not offering enough

James Collins against LiverpoolSince re-joining West Ham, James Collins has been relatively good. However, in a team performing badly, what – if anything – does he offer to the side?

It seems from a quick look at the statistics that he makes a mass amount of effective clearances each game. That is also evidently obvious from watching a match. Is there any player in world football who can’t kick a ball about 40 yards? The majority of these clearances go straight out for an opposition throw-in, which you may argue is what makes an effective clearance, and yes he does that job well enough, but how hard is it?

Arguably the most frustrating thing about the Welsh international for me is the last ditch blocks that he so obviously loves. As a kid I was a defender and a last ditch block, whilst sliding across the ball-holder, was as close as I got to the feeling of a goal most weeks. It seems that James Collins still thrives for this feeling each week. Sometimes the last ditch tackle is very much welcomed but equally, when faced with a ‘tricky’ attacker, they can ‘sell’ him so easily. One quick dummy or faint and the Welshman goes sliding on by.

It’s perhaps unfair to focus on a defender when picking up a clean sheet, however – if Sunderland’s finishing was more accurate, that wouldn’t be the case. One tackle and zero interceptions by Collins versus Sunderland, he also didn’t manage a single block which he loves so. His centre half partner, James Tomkins, managed three tackles and also made one interception, he also tried despairingly to force West Ham up the pitch.

There is also no doubt that if Winston Reid were to be fit, that he would be occupying one of the centre half spots.

So perhaps he is good for something, but that something could be done by many. Still, a rugby career awaits the Welshman, who’s kicks could be very much more valued.

'If he wasn't our manager he is exactly the type of manager you would be bringing in'

David Sullivan speaking to BBC Football Focus gave his full backing to Sam Allardyce before yesterday’s no score draw.

He was asked whether Sam Allardyce will still be the manager in January?

DS “Absolutely!”

BBC “Does it matter about results?”

DS “It does matter about results but really we review a manager at the end of a season. If you asked me what kind of season Sam has had up to now, I would say ‘disappointing’. But let’s judge him at the end of the season. I think the Newcastle manager would have been sacked by most fans after a month of the season but now he is flavour of the month.”

DS “I am deeply concerned. Anybody who looks at where we are in the table and is not concerned are kidding themselves.”
“I really believe Sam is the man for the job. If he wasn’t our manager he is exactly the type of manager you would be bringing in to be the manager. Where do you get someone better than Sam to do the job that is now necessary?”

Image
Earlier this week David Gold at the Season Ticket Holders forum said “We have to rely on Sam and the players. We have to stick together.”

However, Big Sam accepts it will be “impossible” not to sack him if results at West Ham do not improve quickly. Sam said "They cannot be patient forever if I continue to lose football matches. It’s impossible for them to ride the pressure that will come upon them, impossible not to succumb to that pressure like many other owners have done.

“When you look at their history, they have always shown a level of patience to overcome difficult situations and I hope that will be the same. But I know that in the end it is about getting results.

“Everybody will speculate about my future now because I am in the same position as all the other clubs who have got rid of their managers. It is perceived that I am the next one in the line. But it is just about picking up a few points.”

“The owners are going to stick with me or they are not. It is entirely up to them and how they see me in the job and how they see the situation at the moment”

Sam Allardyce: Hopeful on sealing deal for mystery striker

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce in talks for mystery striker

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has revealed they are in advanced talks about signing a mystery striker in the January transfer window.

Allardyce is desperate to bolster his attacking options after seeing West Ham struggle for goals in the absence of the injured Andy Carroll.

West Ham's co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan have promised Allardyce they will fund a deal for a new striker and the Hammers boss has confirmed they are close to landing a new addition to the squad.

"It is an attacking player there are no doubts about that," said Allardyce.

"We are moving on to the next phase and we are talking to the club and the player's agent to see if he is going to join us or not.

"We are moving on to the next phase and we are talking to the club and the player's agent to see if he is going to join us or not."

"We will try and do the deal as quickly as we possibly can, David Sullivan is the quickest owner of a football club I have ever had. He doesn't 'ooh' 'ahh' and 'um' like most of the other owners I have been involved with."

Meanwhile, Allardyce insists he has no problem with Sullivan's comments that he regrets signing Carroll on a permanent basis in the summer with the striker yet to feature this season due to injury.

"David is the owner and he can always say what he thinks because he pays for and looks after the club," added Allardyce.

"The way he is as a person, he gets extremely anxious about the situation. The pressure comes on him as much as it does on to me and everyone else.

"Dealing with that is one thing you have to be capable of doing.

"The commitment to go forward is a big responsibility for us all because this club has to be in the Premier League when we go to the new stadium."

Fabio Capello's presence at White Hart Lane yesterday has got tongues wagging.

He may have vowed not to resign in the wake of his team's 5-0 home thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, but at odds of 2-7, Tottenham Hotspur manager André Villas-Boas remains white-hot favourite to be next Premier League manager to leave his post. A firm believer that if you already have £7 in your grubby little mitt it would be most unwise to risk it for an extra two, the Rumour Mill won't be investing, but the bookies don't tend to get too much wrong and probably have him at odds that short for a very good reason.

The Daily Mail reports that Villas-Boas "survived a crisis meeting" with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Franco Baldini in the immediate aftermath of Sunday's embarrassment, but state the club are already sounding out replacement and suggest incredibly well paid Russia manager Fabio Capello may be among them because he attended yesterday's game. Of course the Italian was also at Stamford Bridge the previous day to watch Chelsea's narrow victory over Crystal Palace, although rumours that he's about to replace José Mourinho or Tony Pulis are conspicuous by their absence.

With Steve Clarke on gardening leave and attending to those boring winter jobs such as cleaning old pots and seedtrays, browsing seed catalogues and digging new beds and borders in preparation for spring sowing, West Bromwich Albion are drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements as head coach, which is believed to feature former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan, former Blackburn Rovers boss Michael Appleton, Real Madrid No2 Paul Clement and Molde manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Despite having been repeatedly scouted by Manchester United, Koke has no desire to leave high-flying Atlético Madrid in January and with his team safely through to the knockout stages of the Champions League and level on points with Barcelona at the summit of La Liga it's not really difficult to see why. Furthermore, with just seven caps to his name and a World Cup looming, the man known as Jorge Resurrección Merodio to his mum believes the inevitable upheaval caused by such a mid-season move would only damage his chances of going to Brazil next summer.

Costa Rica's best known player Bryan Ruiz, by contrast, feels a January move is exactly what he needs, as he's dissatisfied with his lack of opportunities at Fulham and wants to get regular football under his belt ahead of his country's World Cup excursions against England, Uruguay and Italy. Having spent most of the season on the receiving end of dog's abuse from certain sections of Fulham fans for his poor form and apparent lack of effort, the striker is unlikely to be missed if a mooted move to Belgian side Anderlecht comes to pass. As well as offloadiung Ruiz, Fulham will attempt to pacify the aforementioned angry fans by bringing Seattle Sounders striker and former Cottager Clint Dempsey back to Craven Cottage on loan as soon as the January transfer window opens.

The Mirror reports that Manchester United will have to include Mexico striker Javier Hernández in any deal made with a view to bringing Fredy Guarín to Old Trafford, although David Moyes will have to fight off interest from Chelsea if he is to secure the services of the Inter and Colombia midfielder. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Guarin will cost potential suitors £18m, but Inter will apparently let him go for £14m if Chelsea or anyone else with access to their kind of readies pay the lot up front. Other media reports emanating from Italy reveal that Moyes will also offer Hernandez in exchange for Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, but will turn his beady eye towards Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Alex Teixeira if the Serie A side refuse to do business with him.

The chances of Andy Carroll returning to full fitness any time soon seem remote, if there's any truth to speculation linking West Ham with an imminent move for the burly Geordie's Scouse Southampton counterpart, Rickie Lambert. Carroll is currently recovering from a double fracture of his foot, which he suffered while already sidelined with a heel injury and will not have been thrilled to hear his employer David Sullivan recently voice his regret at signing a striker who has missed the entire Premier League campaign through injury. "We are not a rich enough club to deal with that," said Sullivan, speaking to Football Focus. "You know any player can get injured, but we can't buy a player knowing he is going to be out for half the season." Half the season and counting.

The number of louche Bulgarians spotted smoking Gitanes outside the drinking emporiums of Newcastle's Bigg Market could increase by one, if the local football team's plan to prise Dimitar Berbatov away from Fulham for a cut price £2m is a success, while the Toronto Sun has reported that their local MLS side, Toronto FC, have already wrapped up a deal to bring Spurs striker Jermain Defoe to Canada ahead of next season in a deal that would make the 31-year-old striker the highest paid player in MLS history.

Thanks CH, brilliant work as always.

If this isn't an elaborate double bluff from Allardyce re Wednesday then he needs gone. I've had thirty eight years of annoying, sometimes embarrassing defeats (there's been good times too obviously!), but to not even try is unacceptable...
