No fairytale: It looked like recalled Adebayor's screamer had won it for Spurs

The Filth 1-2 West Ham: Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga's late goals clinch Capital One Cup semi spot

Tim Sherwood's first sip from the poisoned chalice turned out to be pure cyanide.

For 80 minutes, Sherwood appeared to have consigned the dreary, soulless era of Andre Villas-Boas and his dossiers to the dustbin at White Hart Lane.

But Santa's hat is claret and blue, and two goals in the last five minutes earned West Ham the booby prize of a Capital One Cup semi-final date with Manchester City.

Good luck with that one, fellas.

If this was caretaker manager Sherwood's audition for the Tottenham job full-time, he only fluffed his lines in the last 15 minutes when Tottenham remembered to lock all the doors - but forgot that Santa comes down the chimney.

Sure enough, the Hammers took the aerial route to salvation, leaving Sherwood to wonder if his spell in charge will be for one night only.

The job is already taking its toll on him.

"It's different - I slept like a baby last night," he said. "I woke up crying four times."

Tottenham's late collapse was the stuff of nightmares after Emmanuel Adebayor, restored to the front line after being ludicrously exiled and banished to train with the kids by AVB, had volleyed them in front, crashing Jermain Defoe's left-wing cross in off the crossbar midway through the second half.

But West Ham boss Sam Allardyce spoiled Sherwood's coronation expertly.

If you need a house guest to spoil the party, mutilate the turkey and scoff all the Quality Street next week, Big Sam's your man.

Allardyce sent on Mohamed Diame, Modibo Maiga and Ravel Morrison to retrieve the cause, and before Sherwood knew what had hit him, the pearly kings were celebrating an unlikely sequel to their 3-0 win at the Lane in October.

The equaliser was hardly from Barcelona's tiki-taka manual, Maiga and Matt Taylor helping on goalkeeper Adrian's long clearance for Matt Jarvis to finish high and handsome beyond Hugo Lloris.

And it was just Sherwood's luck that Maiga, without a goal in 2013, should rise to meet Diame's cross with a firm header into the bottom corner five minutes later.

There was even enough time for the Mali goal machine to crash a long-range missile against the bar as Allardyce's Christmases all came at once.

Sherwood said: "To be honest, we ran out of steam. I think the players are fit enough to play a certain way, but I asked them to go a bit more gung-ho, and it was a complete change of mindset.

"West Ham bombarded us aerially late on and they got the breaks, but it's a major disappointment to the lads. They are absolutely sick in there, and so am I."

As if Tottenham's night did not end in enough crushing anti-climax, England winger Andros Townsend will miss the Christmas and New Year programme after pulling a hamstring.

The only consolation for Sherwood was the reintegration of Adebayor, whose brilliant goal and all-round contribution made a mockery of AVB restricting him to just 45 minutes of Premier League action, in the humiliating 6-0 rout at City, this season.

Spurs' interim coach said: "Adebayor showed enough to prove he can play a key role. He was dropping deep, scored a fantastic goal and put us in the driving seat, but unfortunately we fell off it."

With Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend deployed as orthodox wingers - club-record £30million signing Erik Lamela was not even on the bench - and two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation AVB wouldn't touch with a bargepole, Spurs made a bright start bristling with verve and purpose.

In fact, there was more excitement in the first 10 minutes of Sherwood's reign than in 18 months under the unlamented Portugese.

But as the heavens opened and the Hammers closed ranks, Tottenham's enthusiasm for an early kill was gradually asphyxiated.

Mod men: West Ham mob matchwinner Modibo Maiga

West Ham's League Cup win over Tottenham one for the fans says Sam Allardyce

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was delighted after beating big-spending Tottenham to book a League Cup semi-final place.

Goals in the last 10 minutes from Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga cancelled out a superb strike from Emmanuel Adebayor and set the Hammers up for a two-legged battle with Manchester City next month for a place at Wembley in March.

After defeating the home side's debutant caretaker manager Tim Sherwood, Allardyce crowed: "It was a case of exploiting the spaces Tottenham left.

"Territorially, we didn't play as well as we would have liked, but I hope the way we finished the game will give the players a big lift.

"My squad is probably worth only a fifth of the money Tottenham have spent on theirs, so it's been a great night for us - that's two wins on the trot here, and I know how much that means to West Ham fans."

West Ham, one place and one point above the bottom three, are back to fighting relegation on Saturday when they travel to Old Trafford to meet champions Manchester United in a potential league Cup Final dress rehearsal.

"We hope it's a big, big lift for the players," said Allardyce of Wednesday's win. "We have only got 16 fit players today. It's a brilliant effort from the squad today and a great night for the West Ham fans.

"It's a victory we can enjoy tonight but tomorrow it's up and at them again and getting ready for Manchester United and with a resilience like we showed tonight, who knows, we may get something there. Hopefully it will kick us on."

Allardyce, who made seven changes from Saturday, helped change the game with his three second-half substitutions.

"We knew Tottenham had had a few problems with centre-halves and we exploited that, but that's what it is all about," he said.

"They can say they rested players but we had nine injuries. We've really enjoyed it, and enjoyed coming back against our own rivals."

On facing in-form City in the semis, Allardyce conceded: "It's a tough one. If it was one leg and it was at our place not at theirs it would have been nice, but over two legs it makes it more difficult. Manchester City have scored four goals every home game. So I am just hoping we play at home first!"

Here's Modibo Maiga's winner for West Ham..

The Filth 1 West Ham 2: Maiga spoils Sherwood's big day as Hammers produce cup comeback after Adebayor opener

As Modibo Maiga’s header settled into the net and the visiting West Ham fans rejoiced with a cheeky Cockney verse, Tottenham were reacquainted with that once familiar feeling of high-octane heartbreak.

This is how it always used to be at White Hart Lane: thrilling football, dashing wingers and lots of goalmouth activity, often followed by disappointment.

They were a goal up and could smell the Capital One Cup semi-final. Interim manager Tim Sherwood had firmly re-established the Spurs identity, with two strikers and stylish, attacking football, then the hope vanished as the defence caved in and conceded two goals in the last 10 minutes.

Spurs: Lloris 6, Walker 6, Capoue 6, Chiriches 6, Rose 6 (Fryers 62, 5), Lennon 7, Dembele 6, Sigurdsson 6, Townsend 6 (Chadli 73, 5), Adebayor 7 (Holtby 78), Defoe 7

Subs not used: Soldado, Eriksen, Friedel, Fredericks

Goal: Adebayor 67

Booked: Adebayor

Interim Manager: Tim Sherwood 6

West Ham: Adrian 6, O'Brien 6, Collins 6, McCartney 6, Rat 5, Collison 6, Diarra 6 (Morrison 79), Taylor 7, Joe Cole 5 (Diame 70, 7), Carlton Cole 6 (Maiga 65, 7), Jarvis 6

Subs not used: Noble, Demel, Jaaskelainen, Chambers

Goals: Jarvis 80, Maiga 85

Booked: Diarra

Manager: Sam Allardyce 7

Man of the Match: Modibo Maiga

Referee: Neil Swarbrick 6

Attendance: 34,080

Maiga, the £4.7million Mali striker, who has come to define all that is wrong with Sam Allardyce’s badly balanced squad, won the tie with his first goal for more than a year.

Equally importantly as far as the travelling fans were concerned, he deepened the misery of West Ham’s neighbours and rivals, kicked them when they were down. Maiga’s transformation from figure of fun to cult hero is under way.

Tottenham and Sherwood were crushed. Aspects of their display were encouraging but this was not the result Sherwood needed to convince chairman Daniel Levy he deserves the permanent job.

Just three days after they were humiliated in a 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool, they were humbled by a weakened West Ham team as Allardyce left several first-team regulars on the bench.

It proved to be a tactical decision as inspired as the one to play at White Hart Lane in October without a recognised striker. Then, they beat Spurs 3-0.

That defeat was the beginning of the end for Andre Villas-Boas, sacked after Sunday’s thrashing by Liverpool.

Allardyce slowly drew the sting from Spurs; letting them tear around at a frantic pace and wearing them down.
Allardyce: Substitutions changed the game

They rode their luck. Spurs squandered early chances before the deadlock was broken by a brilliant volley from Emmanuel Adebayor, who had been frozen out by Villas-Boas. Then Allardyce threw on Mo Diame, Ravel Morrison and Maiga, and they turned the game round.

Matt Jarvis equalised 10 minutes from time before Maiga pounced, and the visitors could have scored more as the tie closed amid an East End knees-up.

Maiga smashed a 30-yarder against the bar and Hugo Lloris saved from Jack Collison.
Tim Sherwood: I can do good job as Spurs boss

Modibo Maiga's winner was his first goal for West Ham since he scored in their 3-1 win over Chelsea at Upton Park on December 1, 2012.

Tottenham trooped off looking every bit as dejected as they had after the Liverpool defeat. To make matters worse, Andros Townsend limped off with a hamstring pull.

How had they lost after setting out looking so hot?

Adebayor, starting for the first time this season, may not have been match sharp but was straight into the game. His touch was sound in the first minute as he collected the ball deep, spun and released Aaron Lennon down the right.

Lennon’s low, skiddy cross spilled to Jermain Defoe who whipped a shot narrowly wide of the far post.
On the touchline, Sherwood spun on his heel and cursed. He had promised his team would attack and they were straight on the offensive with dashing wing play but no early goal to settle the nerves.

Townsend lashed a crisp left-foot shot wide from 20 yards after wriggling clear of Collison, Lennon tortured Razvan Rat, tearing past the left back time and again, and Joey O’Brien almost headed a Lennon cross into his own goal.

Adebayor was blowing as half-time arrived and Spurs lost their tempo. Sherwood later suggested they were not fit enough to play the high-tempo style he had asked them to adopt.

West Ham started to counter-attack. They usually involved long and early passes to Carlton Cole his aerial strength was a test for central defensive duo Vlad Chiriches and Etienne Capoue, and one they did not relish.

Lloris was forced into his first save of the game from Cole as half-time approached but Sherwood revived his players, albeit briefly, at the break and Tottenham took the lead in emphatic style.
Defoe drove past Rat and clipped over a deep cross which was smashed in by Adebayor via the underside of the bar.

The Togo striker, sent to train with the youth team this season, did not try to conceal his delight.

The script seemed written. But on went Diame, who forced Lloris into action and Matt Taylor worked the goalkeeper, too, before the equaliser. Then Maiga headed a high ball down to Taylor, who eased it towards Jarvis. He clipped his left-foot shot high into the net with the Spurs defence in a mess.

Five minutes later, the much-maligned Maiga struck, climbing above Chiriches to head home Diame’s cross.

West Ham keeper Adrian saved from Gylfi Sigurdsson to protect the lead and there would be no late salvation for Tottenham.

BAD START: Tim Sherwood did not get the start he would have wanted

The Filth 1 - West Ham 2: Modibo Maiga's first goal in a year seals victory for Hammers

MATT JARVIS and Modibo Maiga ruined interim boss Tim Sherwood's first match in charge of Spurs at rain-soaked White Hart Lane last night.

Sherwood had vowed to bring back Spurs' old attacking style.

And he also brought back Emmanuel Adebayor, who was frozen out under sacked Andre Villas-Boas.

“Sherwood had vowed to bring back Spurs' old attacking style”

It was all set up for a glory, glory night when Togo striker Adebayor struck.

He fired home a superb volley after 67 minutes as Spurs eyed a place in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup.

But West Ham won 3-0 in the Premier League at Tottenham in October and refused to buckle.

First Matt Taylor teed up Jarvis for a stunning finish, slamming the ball high into the roof of the net after 80 minutes.

Then, five minutes later goal-starved Maiga, who had not scored for more than a year, rose high to head the winner.

The Filkth 1 - West Ham 2: Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has the wrong blueprint

DANIEL LEVY rarely looks like he is enjoying watching Tottenham play when the cameras zoom in for those shots showing the poker face he presumably employs as one of football’s toughest boardroom negotiators.

He cannot have enjoyed last night’s 2-1 defeat and it was a fair guess that he was not in the mood for appreciating the wry irony which was at work as Tim Sherwood took his seat in the dug-out as the ninth manager of Levy’s 11-year reign as chairman here in the wind and rain.

Who was it who brought Sherwood into the club five years ago and set him on the course which has won him great admiration from Levy for his skills both as a coach and a technical executive?

Well, it was only Harry Redknapp, the manager who was jettisoned by Levy despite being the only man to satisfy the cravings of the ownership at White Hart Lane for Champions League football.

In fact, Redknapp whipped Sherwood into the place within days of taking over in October 2008. Perhaps he knew something. Perhaps he had a plan.

Do you wonder if that has made Levy question at all the way he likes to run things during the turmoil of this past week?

It certainly might make people wonder if the Tottenham hierarchy’s fixation with running things the European way – with a succession of technical directors passing through – is nothing more than a lot of posturing that has taken the club precisely nowhere. It surely prompts the question that Spurs may have been trying to be too clever by half for too long.

English coaches are not so old school as a lot of people like to think, anyway. But it was certainly a kind of thinking bred within the domestic game which was in evidence in the wake of the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, the coach whose laminated play-books would have been drenched by the foul conditions which were the backdrop of this London derby.

In his first game as interim boss, Sherwood sent out the kind of team which would probably have been picked by Redknapp for a cup tie at home.

It took some time to deliver any payback. But when recalled striker Emmanuel Adebayor finally scored in the 67th minute, it was with a finish stunning enough to utterly vindicate Sherwood’s decision to bring him back from the periphery of the club where he had been placed by Villas-Boas.

Sherwood’s shake-up had involved picking two forwards, – Adebayor and Jermain Defoe – and two wide men, Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend.

Tottenham consequently got at West Ham from the very beginning with a sense of drive and tempo which was in marked contrast to the stuttering vagueness which had marked so many of Spurs’ performances this season under Villas-Boas.

It wasn’t rocket science, but who wanted that in the howling wind and rain of a London derby?

Sherwood was a feisty, combative force in Tottenham’s midfield for four years and is a natural communicator. He was true to his bold nature here last night.

And first it looked like Spurs’ change of style would quickly put an end to the goalscoring problems that blighted the previous months.

Only two minutes had passed when Lennon scurried down the right and crossed for Defoe to turn a screwing shot narrowly wide. Soon afterwards, Adebayor headed narrowly wide. For long spells, West Ham – fielding a slightly more weakened side – were pinned in their own half and the crosses poured in.

Sherwood then ran into his first bout of touchline frustration – even though he and Sam Allardyce indulged in a laugh-a-minute swapping of one-liners throughout most of the evening.

Spurs’ dominance simply did not yield enough serious chances. Adebayor – making his first start of the season – and Defoe experienced the same lack of clear-cut opportunity which had plagued the £26?million signing Roberto Soldado, who was on the bench here.

West Ham made Spurs pay when first Matt Jarvis and then substitute Modibo Maiga poached the goals which left Levy looking more stoney-faced than ever.

Late West Ham goals ruin Tim Sherwood's opening act at Tottenham

The fILTH 1 West Ham 2

Spurs

Emmanuel Adebayor 67

West Ham

Matthew Jarvis 80,
Modibo Maiga 85

West Ham United had emphatically not read the script. This was supposed to be Tim Sherwood's big night; the first time he had managed in the professional game and, also, the first steps towards redemption for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Adebayor had almost become Tottenham Hotspur's forgotten man, although the chairman, Daniel Levy, remained well aware of the monthly direct debit that entered the striker's bank account. It was one of the reasons why Levy finally tired of André Villas-Boas, who would not pick Adebayor, and sacked the Portuguese on Monday.

Sherwood picked Adebayor and the caretaker watched him put Tottenham en route to victory in this Capital One Cup quarter-final with a stunning right-footed volley. When he was substituted in the 78th minute, he departed to a standing ovation.

But it was merely the prompt for West Ham to stamp their authority on the game. After a few nibbles, they found the cutting edge to enjoy another stunning victory at this stadium. Their supporters had only just stopped celebrating the 3-0 Premier League win here on 6 October, which had set in motion the unravelling of Villas-Boas's managerial tenure, but this actually topped it.

It was glorious for West Ham because it had felt so unexpected until the closing stages. They had not mustered a threat on Hugo Lloris's goal until the substitute Mohamed Diamé tested him seriously in the 70th minute. But they turned the tie around so sharply as to leave everyone dizzy. The travelling support were delirious as they basked in another triumph over the club they love to hate.

It was Sam Allardyce's three substitutes who played the key roles. After Matt Taylor had forced Lloris into another smart save, Modibo Maïga, the first change, rose to flick on a high ball to Taylor, who supplied Matt Jarvis, and he plunged the first pin into Sherwood's bubble.

The winner came shortly afterwards. Ravel Morrison, Allardyce's final change, found Diamé and when he crossed, Maïga leapt majestically to direct a header down and into the corner. West Ham's bench punched the air as one; Sherwood's air punches came in bitter frustration.

Maïga had not scored since 1 December last year but one of the final acts of the game was his clubbing left-footed drive from distance threatening to uproot the crossbar.

This was a game that Tottenham had held in the palm of their hand only to surrender, and there was plenty of wackiness to the final quarter. After Jarvis's equaliser, Nacer Chadli went through only to hesitate and be thwarted by Joey O'Brien's excellent tackle while, after Maïga's header, Jermain Defoe and Gylfi Sigurdsson went agonisingly close for Tottenham.

But two things stood out in the final analysis. Firstly, Sherwood's admission that, having asked his players to go "a bit more gung-ho and up-and-at-them", they effectively lacked the fitness to see the job through and, secondly, Allardyce's amazement that Tottenham had not sought to close the game at 1-0. The West Ham manager talked of the spaces that Tottenham left at the back and which his team were able to exploit.

Sherwood had reverted to 4-4-2, the footballing equivalent of meat and two veg, and there was a back-to-British-basics feel about his team, as the rain lashed down. It was the antithesis of the Villas-Boas era and Tottenham started with the bit between their teeth.

Defoe dragged past the post from close range; Andros Townsend, who would depart with a worrying-looking hamstring pull, fizzed wide from distance and O'Brien almost headed into his own goal. Adebayor also went close. All this in the first 10 minutes.

Sherwood lived every moment as the rain tumbled down. He had gone for the tracksuit-and-trainers look and it quickly became apparent that he would not be the silent touchline type. He went through all manner of agonies.

The game became scrappy; heavy on 110% commitment but low on finesse until Adebayor, who had given everything, found a way to make the difference and send Sherwood into a frenzy of high-knee-jumping excitement.

Townsend bobbed and weaved before releasing Defoe down the left and his cross sought Adebayor. There remained plenty to do but his technique and body shape was perfect. The connection was pure and there was the added bonus of seeing the ball ping down and in off the underside of the crossbar. They are always the best ones.

Adebayor had previously played for only 45 minutes of the season at Manchester City and his withdrawal seemed inevitable. Sherwood left the decision for as late as he could but when he made it, the headlines had been written. The drama, though, was only just beginning.

The Filth 1 West Ham United 2 match report: A different manager, but same old story as Spurs are dumped out of Capital One

The manager has changed, a page has been turned, but Daniel Levy is still watching his Tottenham Hotspur team with the expression of a man who has just got the whiff of a very bad smell.

Defeat in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup to West Ham, which, excruciatingly for the Spurs chairman, was their second home defeat of the season to the club to the east. For interim manager Tim Sherwood, it was the worst possible start to what he hopes might one day be a permanent job.

By contrast, judging by his light-hearted demeanour for much of the game one could only assume that Sam Allardyce was not too fussed whether he won or lost. His team will face Manchester City in the semi-final.

Not only that, but Spurs lost Andros Townsend in the second half to what looked like a very bad tear to a thigh muscle. Of course, the real business of rescuing the season starts away at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday but this was an abysmal postscript to the short-lived Andre Villas-Boas era. The chant, inevitably, from the West Ham fans to Sherwood was that he was “getting sacked in the morning”.

That may yet turn out to be right, in a manner of speaking. After the game, Sherwood admitted that he did not even know if he would be in charge for Sunday's game. “It would have to be right for me and right for the football club,” he said when asked if he wanted the job long-term. “There are a lot of big names being bandied about, and rightly so. The chairman needs to make a decision.”

He added that the last 48 hours, since he was called to Levy's office at 10.15am on Monday, had been “mad”. “I'm not used to sleeping two hours a night and thinking about footballers all the time. I said to someone today that I had slept like a baby - that is waking up four times a night crying.”

Spurs started brightly and the lead given to them on 66 minutes by Emmanuel Adebayor, called in from the cold by Sherwood, was reward for a fine attacking performance, especially in the first half. But there are still dire problems in the centre of defence where the combination of Vlad Chiriches and Etienne Capoue was found badly wanting when West Ham launched their comeback.

Two goals in the last 11 minutes from Matt Jarvis and then the substitute Modibo Maiga sealed it. Later Sherwood said that his team had tired badly in the final stages, a consequence, he said, of being asked to play a more “gung-ho” style than that favoured by his predecessor.

As for Allardyce, the gamble on bringing on Maiga who had previously failed to score in more than 12 months at the club paid off handsomely. The Malian international played a crucial part in the Jarvis goal too and Allardyce said later that the striker had “shown glimpses of what we saw when we watched him in France” prior to his £4.7m transfer from Sochaux in July last year.

Allardyce revealed that West Ham had spotted the potential for weakness at the heart of Spurs' defence - “they have had a few problems with centre-halves” - and tried to exploit it. The absence of the suspended Michael Dawson meant that Spurs passed the ball out from the back better but they also lacked his presence in the air.

The team the Spurs interim coach selected had a return-to-the-old-ways feel about it. There were five Englishmen in it for a start, with Kyle Walker as captain and Jermain Defoe restored to the forward line. Back came Danny Rose at left-back behind Townsend with Aaron Lennon on the opposite wing. And of course, there was Adebayor in the team for his first start of the season.

As for the seven who arrived in the summer there was only Capoue and Chiriches who started in the first XI. There were three more on the bench with Paulinho suspended and Erik Lamela injured. The system was 4-4-2 and the attitude was direct.

Spurs really should have scored in the early storm they unleashed on West Ham, undertaken with the classic brio of a team with a newly-installed manager. Sherwood proved himself to be particularly demonstrative, spinning around in frustration when Defoe dragged a shot just wide in the first minute after Adebayor had played a beautiful ball down the right channel to get Lennon clear.

In those early stages it was fair to say Spurs were much that they had not been in the dog days of the Villas-Boas era. They took the initiative, especially Townsend, a particular favourite of Sherwood who has overseen much of his development. He struck a left-foot shot just wide on four minutes. While there was much endeavour after that, Spurs never created chances as good for the rest of the half.

On the touchline, Sherwood insisted that they pass the ball forward at every opportunity and did not hide his frustration when his team failed to do so. As for West Ham, even with a five man midfield and Carlton Cole on his own up front they often looked outnumbered. But their defence coped admirably, James Collins and George McCartney in particular, with Jack Collison and Alou Diarra tidying up nicely in front.

There was scarcely a chance for the away team in the first half and Spurs only really came alive when half-time loomed again. A shot from Adebayor was so wild that it ended up in the second tier of the Park Lane end with five minutes of the half to play. A minute later he exchanged passes with Defoe but Diarra was able to see the ball away from trouble.

West Ham's best early second half chance was a free-kick from Collins from which the Spurs players anticipated possession would be given back to them. Instead, the West Ham captain hit a free-kick from his own half that forced Hugo Lloris to retreat and push the ball out virtually on his own line. Collins' approach did not please his opponents, especially Adebayor.

The Spurs striker was doing his best to show effort and willing and for long periods in the second half dropped so deep that he was at times a fifth midfielder. Sherwood's team needed greater momentum in those stages but they probably did not need Adebayor occupying the place on the pitch where their midfielders had to play.

In the end, Adebayor arrived at the right time, in the right place, to give his team the lead. It was a beautifully taken goal, a full-blooded volley with his left foot from Defoe's cross from the left. It was his first goal for Spurs since one in the 2-1 win away to Stoke on 12 May. Yet in the aftermath West Ham came into their own.

Allardyce had replaced Carlton Cole with Maiga and then brought on Mohamed Diame for Joe Cole in quick succession after the Adebayor goal on 66 minutes. Lloris was obliged to save twice from Diame and then later Matt Taylor. In what was to prove his last burst down the right wing, Townsend pulled up short. He had to be helped around the pitch and down the tunnel.

West Ham's first goal was typically direct and asked questions of Spurs' central defenders that will have been troubling Sherwood all evening. Maiga won the knockdown from a free-kick, Taylor laid the ball off and in the left channel, Jarvis hit a fast-rising shot past Lloris.

That vulnerability in Spurs' defence was evident for the second goal. Diame, fed the ball by substitute Ravel Morrison, struck a cross from the right with far too much loft on it, yet no Spurs player challenged decisively. Maiga proved the most effective and was rewarded with a goal.

In the final stages, the Spanish goalkeeper Adrian made a fine save from Gylfi Sigurdsson and then Maiga struck the bar with a shot of astonishing power. After that, West Ham, League Cup semi-finalists, looked comfortable for the second time at White Hart Lane this season.

Tottenham (4-4-2): Lloris; Walker, Capoue, Chiriches, Rose (Fryers 61); Lennon, Sigurdsson, Dembele, Townsend (Chadli 72); Defoe, Adebayor (Holtby 77).

West Ham (4-1-4-1): Adrian; O'Brien, Collins, McCartney, Rat; Diarra (Morrison 78); J Cole (Diame 69), Collison, Taylor, Jarvis; C Cole (Maiga 640.

Image
Right on time: Modibo Maïga scores his first goal in just over a year as West Ham shock Spurs at the Lane again

The Filth 1 West Ham United 2:

At the end of this ultimately eventful Capital One Cup quarter-final, Sam Allardyce shook hands with the host, Tim Sherwood, and strolled off with all the delighted air of a gate-crasher who had found the cigars and champagne on his way out of the party.

White Hart Lane’s welcome bash for Sherwood had been going so well. His attacking, wing-borne 4-4-2 tactics were well-received by the fans. His talks before kick-off and at half-time clearly struck a chord with players, who started both halves strongly.

Tottenham Hotspur deservedly took the lead after 67 minutes through the excellent Emmanuel Adebayor, whose restoration to the starting line-up after being cold-shouldered by Andre Villas-Boas proved a masterstroke by Sherwood.

His withdrawal with 12 minutes remaining proved costly.

Adebayor was tiring slightly, inevitably so after having only played 45 minutes previously for Spurs this season, but he could have eked out a few more minutes, taking the team closer to the safety of the final whistle.

Sam Allardyce delighted with cup win

Capital One Cup: Allardyce hails West Ham's "fantastic victory" over The Filth

Sam Allardyce hailed West Ham's "resilient performance" after knocking Spurs out of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

The Hammers came from behind to claim a second successive win at White Hart Lane.

Allardyce's men won 3-0 in the Premier League encounter in October in one of the results which ultimately cost Andre Villas-Boas his job and saw Tim Sherwood placed in charge of Spurs for the League Cup quarter-final.

Sherwood thought he had made a dream start to life in the dugout when Emmanuel Adebayor put Spurs in front midway through the second half, but Matt Jarvis scored 10 minutes from time and Modibo Maiga headed in an 85th-minute winner.

That sent the Hammers, struggling in the Premier League, into the semi-finals, where they will face Manchester City.

Allardyce hopes the win can provide a much-needed fillip for his relegation-threatened side - and said: "It was a fantastic victory for us.

"It's a brilliant effort from the squad. It's a great night for us, it's a great night for the West Ham fans, because it's twice on the trot.

"It's a victory we can enjoy tonight, but tomorrow it's up and at it again and getting ready for Manchester United.

"With a resilient performance - like we showed tonight - against Manchester United, hopefully we might get something there. Hopefully it will kick us on."

It was Maiga's first goal in more than a year and Allardyce hopes it will be the start for him, too.

"I'm delighted for him because he's showed glimpses of what we saw when we watched him in France," Allardyce added.

"All I hope is it's unlocked the door for him and he goes on to continue to score more goals."

Looking ahead to the two-leg semi-final against City - the Hammers travel to the Etihad first - Allardyce said: "It's a tough one, isn't it? If it had been one leg and if it was a draw and it pulled out that it was at our place, not at theirs, it would have been nice.

"Over two legs it makes it a little bit more difficult when you know Man City have scored on average four goals every home game."

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is wanted by Arsenal. :

Sir Alex Ferguson has always been a keen racing fan. You'll know that, particularly if you read his latest memoir and noticed the passing mention of the seismic and decidedly ill-advised row over champion stallion Rock of Gibraltar in which he became embroiled with his former employers John Magnier and JP McManus. Yesterday a slightly less controversial beast named I'm Fraam Govan, which Ferguson actually does own, won the former Manchester United manager a prize pot worth £60,000 at Kempton Park, getting his head in front over 11 furlongs under a fine hold-up ride from his jockey Jim Crowley. The only surprise? That in the wake of his slightly awkward appearance in the guard of honour for Ferguson at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, Ferguson's forelock-tugging successor David Moyes was not on hand to lead the horse in to the winner's enclosure on behalf of his master.

The Rumour Mill jests of course, as Moyes was otherwise engaged masterminding his greatest football triumph to date: passing the acid test of football management that is victory for a visiting team at the Britannia Stadium on as filthy, dirty, wet and windy a Wednesday night at Stoke as you're ever likely to see. Despite fielding a team comprised largely of reserves, Moyes still chose not to give Wilfried Zaha a run out, a state of affairs that suggests the winger will almost certainly feeling that he has no option to go out on loan if he wants to play football on a regular basis this season. With - deep breath - Newcastle, Swansea City, West Ham, West Brom and Aston Villa believed to be among up to 10 clubs who fancy signing up Zaha in January, Moyes is likely to spend an hour or two studying the fixture list in a bid to figure out which interested party is most likely to take the most points off his main rivals.

With Atletico Madrid joint top of the Spanish League and having been handed an eminently winnable Champions League last 16 draw against the worst Milan team the Rumour Mill has ever seen, their in-form striker Diego Costa is unlikely to want to leave the Vicente Calderon any time soon. This won't stop Arsenal trying to sign the 25-year-old Brazilian who has scored 22 goals already this season; the Premier League leaders are believed to be interested in triggering the £32m release clause in his contract once the January transfer window inches open and have already opened negotiations with the player's "people". Costa's is believed to be one name on a five-man shortlist of strikers drawn up by Arsenal, the others being Juventus striker Fernando Llorente, AC Milan's Stephan El Shaarawy, Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski and Paris Saint-Germain's Ezequiel Lavezzi.

The Daily Mirror reports that Iker Casillas is being touted around the upper echelons of the Premier League, where both Arsenal and Manchester City have been approached by shifty Arthur Daly types enquiring if they'd be interested in buying a 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper with one careful owner and about 630 appearances for club and country on the clock.

The Mirror also reports that Manchester City midfielder Abdisalam Ibrahim is wanted by Swansea, Reading and Queens Park Rangers. The 22-year-old spent the first part of this season on loan at Norwegian side Strømsgodset, who he helped win the Tippeligaen, the country's equivalent of the Premier League. Crystal Palace and Everton have been linked with Ibrahim in the past, while he is also believed to have turned heads in France and Italy.

In news that will come as no surprise to regular readers of the Rumour Mill, assorted newspapers continue to report that Real Madrid are planning a summer move for Luis Suárez, while Seattle Sounders striker Clint Dempsey is about to return to Fulham on loan. Meanwhile in Italy, Inter centre-back Andrea Ranocchi is set to usurp St Francis as Assisi's favourite local celebrity, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal all interested in bringing him to England.

The Irish Independent reveals that Aiden McGeady's January move to Everton is advancing full steam ahead, although Hull City, Newcastle and Aston Villa are also sniffing around the Spartak Moscow winger, whose contract expires next summer. McGeady was suspended in late November for apparently failing to heed his manager's instructions and is believed to be anxious to leave the Russian club sooner rather than later.

And finally, Juventus and Inter both like the cut of Manchester City defender Aleksandar Kolarov's jib, while Tottenham want to install Ajax boss Frank De Boer as their new manager. André Villas-Boas is a surprise contender for the vacant manager's position at West Brom.

That winning feeling: Modibo Maiga celebrates after scoring West Ham’s late winner to put Tottenham out of the Capital One Cup at White Hart Lane

West Ham time it to perfection to pull off Great Lane Robbery at Tottenham

As Oscar Wilde so nearly put it, to lose once at home to West Ham may be regarded as unfortunate. To lose twice looks like carelessness. But, much to West Ham’s delight, that is what has happened to Tottenham this season.

The reaction to October’s victory at White Hart Lane, the only highlight of a miserable last few months, will have made Sam Allardyce realise just how much this fixture means to the West Ham fans.

So his team could not possibly have chosen a better time than one of the most miserable nights of the year to give their long-suffering fans the Christmas bonus they deserve – coming from behind for the first time this season to win and secure a place in the last four of the Capital One Cup.

This win brings some much-needed feelgood factor back to the club

As if to underline West Ham’s much-publicised lack of attacking threat, Spurs started with two strikers capable of scoring a hatful of goals, Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe, but such are Tottenham’s striking options that, ironically, both players have been touted as possible targets for West Ham in the transfer window.

Adebayor is a player who divides opinion among fans more than most – devastating when the mood takes him, but equally capable of being utterly exasperating – so when Defoe set him up to volley Spurs ahead, their fans must already have been sizing up the options for the semi-final draw. After all, it was West Ham.

But they were oh so wrong. Shortly after Adebayor, Tottenham’s main aerial threat, was substituted, West Ham keeper Adrian went for the route one approach, with a length-of-the-field clearance. The much-maligned Modibo Maiga (more of that later) touched it on to Matt Taylor, who played the ball into the path of Matt Jarvis – and bang, it was in. 1-1 with 10 minutes to go. All substitutions made, and it’s got to be settled on the night – who wants it more?

Maiga has come in for masses of stick recently, but given that he is a) paid to score goals, b) practices doing so all week and c) hadn’t managed to do so all season, his detractors do have a valid point. But such thoughts were consigned to the dustbin of history when he got on the end of fellow substitute Mohammed Diame’s cross to head home with five minutes left.

West Ham’s fans were delirious and their players fevered, while Tottenham were simply stunned. Defeat was most definitely not in the schedule for the launching of the glorious new post-AVB era. But that’s how it finished – Spurs down and out, West Ham through and flying.

One swallow does not a summer make, especially not in December – West Ham’s league form and position are still desperate and in need of drastic improvement. But this win brings some much-needed feelgood factor back to the club, and a feeling that things really can be turned round. And if you can’t have hopes and dreams at Christmas, then when can you?
