Happy Hammer: Jarvis celebrates his goal against Spurs

Matt Jarvis confident West Ham can build on Tottenham triumph with win at Manchester United

Matt Jarvis has insisted West Ham now have the belief to become the latest side to shock Manchester United at Old Trafford.

West Brom, Everton and Newcastle have all won at the defending champions this season.

Sam Allardyce's side have slipped down to 17th place during a troubled Premier League campaign.

But their Capital One Cup victory at Tottenham meant they have recorded back-to-back wins at White Hart Lane for the first time since 1966. And now Jarvis reckons they can take this confidence into the fight for survival - and win at Old Trafford for the first time since 2007.

"It was a fantastic result and just what we needed," he said. "Now I don't see why we can't get something at Manchester United. Teams have gone to Old Trafford this season and got results.

"At home, we'll try and be as solid as we usually are and try and get some points there. They're still a fantastic side. But we can go there full of confidence."

Despite the qualified support of co-owner David Sullivan, Allardyce admitted before the visit to Tottenham that he needed to start winning or his job would be in danger. The three teams below West Ham have all changed managers this season while 16th-placed West Brom sacked Steve Clarke at the weekend.

After the win, the other co-owner David Gold tweeted: "Brilliant. Well done Big Sam. Well done the players. Well done to our fabulous fans you were at your very best tonight. Thank you."

The come-from-behind win was achieved without suspended captain Kevin Nolan and injuries to Stewart Downing, Winston Reid and Andy Carroll - arguably the club's four best players.

But after some dire performances this season, this was the display of determined side playing for their under-pressure manager. Former Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas could have done with the same reaction in recent weeks.

Jarvis, who scored the equaliser, said: "I don't think us all backing Sam has ever been in doubt. We work extremely hard and show great team spirit. We back the manager and it came out today.

"The problem is that we've just not been putting our chances away. We've created loads of chances and not put them away. We've kept eight clean sheets but we need to score when we get the opportunities.

"When we get the chances if we can put them away it takes the pressure off the whole team defensively and that's what we did at Tottenham. It doesn't get any better for us coming away from home against a big rival and to get a win playing as well as we did."

West Ham can kick on after defeating Tottenham according to Matt Jarvis

MATT JARVIS reckons West Ham can follow up their League Cup heroics by piling more Old Trafford misery on Manchester United.

The Hammers stunned Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane on Wednesday to reach the Capital One Cup semi-finals.

And the victory was all the more impressive because boss Sam Allardyce rested some of his star men for the upcoming trip to United tomorrow and the visit of Arsenal on Boxing Day. West Brom, Everton and Newcastle have all notched historic wins at United this season.

And Jarvis, 27, who bagged the equaliser at Spurs, said: “I don’t see why we can’t get a result.

“Teams have gone to Old Trafford this season and got results.

“We needed a win and to get it against Spurs is massive”
Matt Jarvis

“I don’t know if it’s easier now. They’re still a fantastic side.

“But we can go there full of confidence after beating Spurs, which people didn’t expect.”

West Ham’s reward for dumping out their London rivals is a two-legged semi-final against cup favourites Manchester City.

And the winger added: “It’s a massive challenge. We need to concentrate on the league for the time being.

“We needed a win and to get it against Spurs is massive.”

Wednesday night saw the Hammers defeat a troubled Tottenham

Old Trafford doesn’t scare West Ham, says Matt Jarvis ahead of Manchester United clash

MATT JARVIS says West Ham will go to Manchester United tomorrow full of belief that they can also prove Old Trafford is no longer the fortress it once was.

West Ham’s confidence barometer has swung widely in a fluctuating season but reads ‘high’ after Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup victory at Tottenham.

Midfielder Jarvis says that win and the fact that Newcastle, Everton and West Brom have won at the home of the champions this season only fuels the belief that the Hammers could cause another upset.

He said: “I don’t see why we can’t get something there. Teams have gone to Old Trafford this season and got results.

“I don’t know if it’s easier to play there now, they are still a fantastic side. But we can go there full of confidence.

“It was a hard-fought victory against Spurs and a massive confidence boost for ourselves. It doesn’t get any better for us coming away from home against a big rival and to get a win and play as well as we did.”

It was in May 2007 that West Ham last won at United, with Carlos Tevez scoring the winner that kept them up that season.

If they are to triumph, they will have to take any chance that comes their way – something they have struggled to do all season. West Ham have eight clean sheets but have scored only 13 goals this campaign and lie 17th in the table with 14 points.

Jarvis, who scored the first against Spurs, said the result showed the players’ faith in manager Sam Allardyce, who has been under fire in recent weeks.

“We work extremely hard and show great team spirit,” he said. “We back the manager and it came out against Spurs. I don’t think it has ever been in doubt.”

West Ham's Matt Jarvis celebrates with team-mate Modibo Maiga after scoring the equaliser against Spurs in the Capital One Cup quarter-final, which his team went on to win

West Ham's Matt Jarvis hopes cup win at Spurs will spark league revival
• Winger confident about next game at Manchester United
• Hammers consider taking Robbie Keane on loan

The West Ham forward Matt Jarvis believes the club's progress into the Capital One Cup semi-finals can act as a springboard for an improvement in their league form as they seek to gain reward from Saturday's trip to Manchester United.

Victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday – their second success at White Hart Lane this season – gave Sam Allardyce's side a semi-final with Manchester City next month, though attention is fixed first on hoisting themselves up the Premier League table. West Ham have been hampered by the absence of Andy Carroll through injury this term and, denied a regular goalscorer, languish 17th and a point clear of the bottom three.

While Carroll nears a return from a persistent foot injury, the club have explored the possibility of taking Robbie Keane on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy – the Republic of Ireland captain spent the second half of the 2010-11 season at Upton Park – before the start of the Major League Soccer season in March. Galaxy would need to be persuaded that the 33-year-old's achilles, upon which he had surgery in November, has recovered sufficiently for him to make the move and the coach, Bruce Arena, is understood to be keener for the player to rest up before the resumption of pre-season training in mid-January.

Regardless of the success of that pursuit, there is optimism that form will pick up and the players and management are encouraged by the resilient display at White Hart Lane. "It was a hard-fought victory and a massive confidence boost for ourselves," said Jarvis, who scored his side's equaliser before Modibo Maiga's late winner. "It doesn't get any better for us, coming away from home against a big rival, than to get a win and play as well as we did.

"I don't think our support for the manager has ever been in doubt. We work extremely hard and show great team spirit. We back the manager and it came out at Spurs. Obviously we just want to keep putting in the performances and getting the right results. I don't see why we can't get anything at Manchester United. Teams have gone to Old Trafford this season and got results. They're still a fantastic side but we go there full of confidence."

West Ham host Arsenal on Boxing Day before fixtures against West Bromwich Albion and Fulham, teams directly around them in the table, complete the festive season. "We've just not been putting our chances away," added Jarvis as he tried to explain his side's toils. "We've created loads of chances and not put them away. We've kept eight clean sheets but we need to score when we get the opportunities. When we get the chances, if we can put them away, it takes the pressure off the whole team defensively."

Finnbogason has been a prolific goal scorer

West Ham aim to foil Celtic's iceman chase

WEST HAM could scupper Celtic’s hopes of landing Alfred Finnbogason.

The Iceland international has been a prolific scorer, netting more than 40 goals in his last 18 months in the Netherlands, and a number of top European clubs have started to take note.Lennon is desperate to add more firepower and will have to move quickly if he wants to land Finnbogason,

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has had the 24-year-old watched in recent weeks and is on the lookout for another striker next month as record signing Andy Carroll continues to struggle with injury.

A striker remains a priority for Celtic as Teemu Pukki, Anthony Stokes and Amido Balde have all failed to nail down the main striking slot

Celtic would have to pay around £5million to get their man and his salary wouldn’t break their wage structure, although that could change if other sides make bids.

If that becomes the case then the Hoops would have to look elsewhere – knowing they don’t have the financial muscle to compete with the English Premier League sides.

A striker remains a priority for Celtic as Teemu Pukki, Anthony Stokes and Amido Balde have all failed to nail down the main striking slot.

There are also concerns that Georgios Samaras could join Joe Ledley in quitting at the end of the season.

Matt Jarvis netted the first to bring West Ham back level before Maiga scored the winner with five minutes remaining

Bring on Man Utd! West Ham's Modibo Maiga brimming with confidence after slaying Spurs

WEST HAM striker Modibo Maiga is eyeing a surprise victory over Manchester United this weekend after his goal dumped Tottenham out of the Capital One Cup last night.

The Mali international ended a barren run in front of goal at White Hart Lane with a headed 85th minute winner to seal a 2-1 comeback victory over Spurs and West Ham's passage through to semi-finals of the competition.

Manchester City stand in the way of a Wembley final for the Hammers, but Maiga is putting cup glory to one side as he aims to down the current Premier League champions at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"Well, the draw's good and we'll see how it goes. But that's done and now we go again for the next league game, which is very, very important for us as well, for West Ham, for everyone. So for now, we're thinking about that," he told the club's official website.

“It's Manchester United, we know what to expect. We're going to push to beat them”

"It's Manchester United, we know what to expect. We're going to push to beat them. That's all I can say, we're going there to win and come the end we'll see."

The former Sochaux man joined the East Londoners in 2012 following promotion back to the Premier League, but failed to establish himself in Sam Allardyce's first-team with Andy Carroll preferred in attack.

Prior to last night's winner Maiga had failed to score since his strike in the 3-1 victory over Chelsea last December and the Hammers' front man spoke of the relief at finally getting off the mark.

"Already it feels great, because for me, what was going on wasn't normal! But that's football and that's how it goes," he said.

"You have to think, you have to work and, sometimes, to wait.

"It [the goal] was always going to come and it happened on Wednesday night. Here's hoping it carries on."

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce ‘earning more than Spain coach Del Bosque’

Sam Allardyce is earning more than Roberto Mancini, Rafael Benitez and Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, according to a report released today.

And the report also claims Harry Redknapp – boss of Championship QPR – is No.26 on the list, higher than Del Bosque.

West Ham boss Allardyce is shown to be bringing home a wage of just under £3million – placing him at No.13 in the world in terms of the highest-earning football managers, as revealed in a study by Brazilian sports economics firm Pluri Consultoria.

That is level with England boss Roy Hodgson and above former Manchester City boss Mancini, who is now in charge of Turkish club Galatasaray and is 15th with earnings of £2.918m.

Despite his pay packet, Allardyce’s men sit just one place and one point above the Premier League relegation zone ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester United.

Benitez, who left Chelsea at the end of last season and took over at Napoli, is joint-15th with Mancini.

Redknapp – boss of Championship club QPR – actually earns more (£2.084m) per annum than Del Bosque, the coach of world and European champions Spain, who takes home £1.959m.

The highest-paid boss in world football is former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, who earns £14m for his role as Bayern Munich manager.

Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho is second with £8.364m, Marcello Lippi, who now coaches Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande, is next with £8.340m, just ahead of Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger (£6.889m).

Manchester United supremo David Moyes comes in a lowly seventh, with Manuel Pellegrini – boss of Manchester rivals City – in tenth place.

Of the top ten, six have worked, or are working, in England. Only one – former England coach Fabio Capello – is a current national-team boss, with Russia. The rest are all working at club level.

None of the top ten are English – Moyes is the only Briton – with the rest being from Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany and Chile.

Top ten high-earning managers (as reported by Pluri Consultoria):

1. Pep Guardiola (Bayern Munich) £14.176million

2. Jose Mourinho (Chelsea) £8.364m

3. Marcello Lippi (Guangzhou E.) £8.340m

4. Arsene Wenger (Arsenal) £6.889m

5. Fabio Capello (Russia) £6.504m

6. Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid) £6.254m

7. David Moyes (Man United) £4.920m

8. Tata Martino (Barcelona) £4.503m

9. Jurgen Klopp (Borussia Dortmund) £3.586m

10. Manuel Pellegrini (Man City) £3.473m

Manchester United v West Ham United - Match Preview, Stats & Team News

To be played on Saturday 21st December 2013 at 15:00. Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester.

Odds: Manchester United 4/11 Draw 17/4, West Ham United 17/2

Last season: 1-0

Preview & injury news

Have Manchester United got the makings of going on a run and mounting a decent defence to their Premier League title? Well, they go into this game having won three games on the bounce in all competitions and ten points off top spot. Here they have a run of winnable fixtures coming up as they look to improve on their eighth place standing in the Premier League. West Ham could do with picking up some points in though they will have been delighted at managing to turn around their Capital One Cup tie against Spurs to qualify for the semi-finals. The table doesn't make pretty reading for the Hammers at the moment as they currently sit one point above the drop zone.

On the injury front, the fresh injury worry seems to revolve around Wayne Rooney who picked up a groin injury in the past week but manager David Moyes has said it is not serious and should be able to return to the side. Robin Van Persie and Michael Carrick are still sidelined with thigh and calf injuries respectively, whilst United could welcome back Nemanja Vidic (knock) and Marouane Fellaini (back) to the squad after their respective injuries.

For West Ham, they still have a few injury concerns but they could welcome back James Tomkins to the squad after a groin problem. Stewart Downing is out until February with a calf injury whilst Winston Reid is expected back in late January at the earliest with his ankle injury. Andy Carroll is expected to return for the Hammers early on in the New Year whilst Ricardo Vaz Te continues to recover from a dislocated shoulder.

Key stats

Wayne Rooney is Manchester United's top scorer in the league this season with eight goals.

Ravel Morrison is West Ham United's top scorer in the league this season with three goals.

Manchester United had 56% possession in their last league match, a 3-0 away win against Aston Villa.

West Ham United had 41% possession in their last league match, a 0-0 draw at home against Sunderland.

5 players to watch

Tom Cleverley - He can be used a scapegoat for some of Manchester United's failings this season but in the middle of the park he is going to have a big job if he plays, and a performance similar to that against Aston Villa would go down nicely.

Ravel Morrison - It was no secret that he was rated highly by Manchester United but events off the field meant he left the club for West Ham. This weekend he returns and he will hope to demonstrate that talent at Old Trafford to help the Hammers to a positive result.

Ashley Young - After his impressive strike against Stoke City in the League Cup in midweek to end a barren streak in front of goal, will David Moyes reward him with another opportunity to impress this weekend against the Hammers?

Modibo Maiga - His towering header gave West Ham victory in the Capital One Cup in midweek but up front is an area where they have struggled this season. Old Trafford wouldn't be a bad place for Maiga to find the net and help boost the goals scored column for the Hammers.

Wayne Rooney - David Moyes has said that Rooney's injury isn't serious and should play against West Ham on Saturday. He has been the star performer for Moyes this season so it's worth keeping an eye on his fitness, and of course he may find himself playing a starring role yet against for the Champions.

Last time they met

West Ham United 2-2 Manchester United, Premier League April 2013

The same scoreline as their FA Cup meeting at Upton Park that season but a different pattern of scoring as United got that little bit closer to winning the League despite dropping points. Ricardo Vaz Te gave the Hammers the lead with a diving header from a Matt Jarvis cross but Antonio Valencia equalised after good work from Shinji Kagawa on the half hour mark. The Hammers restored their lead through Mohamed Diame's low drive before Robin Van Persie equalised by turning on Kagawa's shot on the rebound, after it had two posts and James Collins. However, it was suggested that Van Persie was offside, leaving Sam Allardyce less than happy.

Can Man United extend their winning run?

Maiga; a striker in the making?

I know from previous comments about this player that, to put it politely, he divides opinion. I started off the season trying to defend him but, as the weeks went on and he was asked to play a role by the manager that he is plainly unsuited to, failure followed failure and defence became untenable – the guy was clearly a donkey.

At he back of my mind I still blamed Allardyce. Well, I usually do. In this case though, my reason is that Maiga is not suited to be the lone target man but would, I believe, benefit more from football played on the ground. That said, he is improving in terms of his ability to win most of the aerial balls pumped his way (and God knows he gets enough practice) and in the Capital One cup tie at White Hart Lane his impact was undeniable.

Going back to the Fulham game, I thought he played extremely well and the point was made by Shearer on MOTD that when Carlton Cole came on and scored, Maiga had almost had an assist in terms of the leg-work he had put in.

His goal last night was an extremely well taken header. If Carroll had scored it, everyone would be raving. He then followed up by crashing an unstoppable effort against the crossbar from 25 yards. He looked a different player.

Confidence? Attacking formation? Luck?

So, I ask the question. Maiga; ‘proper player (potentially) ‘ or, as some have suggested ‘the worst player to pull on a West ham shirt in 25 years’?

Tottenham are hopeful that Andros Townsend will not miss more than a month of first-team football after his hamstring tear against West Ham, with the early indications that the England international's injury is not as severe as first feared.

Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, has described Tottenham's attempt to hire him as manager last year as a "close shave" and declared, while dismissing the notion of considering another job offer from White Hart Lane, that the north London club's frequent sacking of managers put him off any idea of working for them.

Kevin Nolan's ban in December makes it fifth season in a row!

West Ham captain Kevin Nolan’s three match ban over Christmas is the fifth season in a row he has picked up a suspension in December.

Nolan’s straight red card for a deliberate stamp at Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson at Anfield will rule him out of the trip up north to Manchester United.

Last season he picked up a fifth booking of the season against Reading on Boxing Day that saw him suspended for our next game against Norwich on New Year’s Day.

In 2011 he was banned for West Ham’s match against Derby on December 29th after collecting five bookings after a tackle on Zigic of Birmingham which was almost a carbon copy of the Jordan Hendicerson which got him sent off!.

A fifth caution of the season against Manchester City on Boxing Day 2010 while playing for Newcastle meant he missed the trip to Spurs two days later.

In 2009, while a Newcastle player a red card against Watford on December 5th led to a one-game ban.

At the Season Ticket Holders Fans Forum earlier this moth he apologised for his silly challenge but strongly denied he wanted to have time off. The video can be seen below.

Kevin said “It was a silly tackle and stupid of me. I’m rarely disappointed in myself but I am sorry for that. I apologised to all the lads as well”

“I’ll be working hard on the training ground,” the 31-year-old said. “I’m certainly not getting away with it. I’ll be in on Wednesday while all the other lads are off”

David Gold later that evening suggested Kevin Nolan’s ban would give Ravel Morrison a chance to shine and gave a strange analogy of how catching his best friend with his wife led to strange twist of good fortune in his life.

I met Kevin Nolan on Wednesday at the Fans Forum and submitted a question on why the gaffer always chooses him to start if he is fit. The question didn’t make the cut for questions to be asked.
