Go West: Will Carlton Cole cross London and sign for QPR?

West Ham's Carlton Cole a transfer target in winter window for QPR boss Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp is ready to prise Carlton Cole out of West Ham in the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old striker re-signed for the Hammers in October after being released last summer. An injury crisis and dearth of attacking options prompted Cole’s shock return.

But the former England international was only offered an initial three month deal.

With the window opening this week QPR boss Redknapp, desperate to keep his team on course for promotion, wants to boost his side’s attacking powers.

It will be a controversial raid by ’Arry on the club he managed for seven years.

The Loftus Road boss has grown increasingly frustrated by the form of Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson. As a free agent, Cole could prove a useful addition to Rangers’ attack.

Relegation-threatened West Ham are keen to add to their squad in the next month.

Manager Sam Allardyce recognises the need for more goal-scoring options and has also enquired about Everton defender John Heitinga. They will face competition from Fulham and Norwich for the Holland international.

Asamoah Gyan has also cast doubts on a January move to West Ham - insisting he is happy with UAE club Al Ain.

“My heart and soul are attached to Al Ain,” striker Gyan, 28, said. “I can confirm West Ham have made an offer for me. But it is up to Al Ain to make a decision”

A new contract for young midfielder Ravel Morrison is also being discussed.

Under a clause in his contract, if West Ham receive a bid of £10million they must quadruple his current £15,000-a-week wage. The alternative will be to sell the England Under-21 international.

Given West Ham’s precarious position, owners David Sullivan and David Gold won’t want to over-stretch the club.

Morrison’s deal has 18 months left and one alternative would be to negotiate a new one, including a big pay rise, but without the punishing clauses.

West Ham 3 West Brom 3: Struggling sides serve up goal feast as Berahino strike thwarts Hammers comeback

When the true believers boast of ‘the best league in the world’, these are the kind of results they cite. Two sides who are desperately short of points and form casting dull caution to the winds and sharing six goals.

What more could anybody ask? To which the answer must be: quite a lot, actually. It was the kind of breathless, barnstorming knockabout exhibition which may well have amused the neutrals on lunchtime television.

But the fact that six goals were shared owes far more to chaotic defending than to any obvious creative virtues these teams may possess.

The muffled boos which greeted the close lacked the rancorous edge of recent weeks. A point is reason for qualified relief at Upton Park in these desperate days.

But even that reward would have proved beyond West Ham had Saido Berahino’s wickedly curling free-kick not smashed against a post instead of finding the success it deserved. Victory, of course, was an impertinent dream, since they have now won just two of their 10 home league games this season.

Albion’s predicament is considerably less acute, though their defending was almost equally inept.

Youssouf Mulumbu had performed with majestic, match-long midfield persistence. Nicolas Anelka had demonstrated with two opportunistic goals that the years have yet to dim his finishing powers; the suggestion that he had also demonstrated some highly dubious political allegiances was embarrassing Albion officials.

Yet those efforts were betrayed by defenders who were never more than a nervous moment from their next telling mistake.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce was making great play of the full-backs he had been forced to draft into central defence but, as with so much of the manager’s pleading, it sounded uncannily like an excuse.

Still, three goals represented an outrageous return by West Ham’s usual standards, and you could sense the faint surprise tainting the home crowd’s acclaim. But their League position is neither deceptive nor unmerited, and it is becoming difficult to imagine that the league contains three sides less equipped for survival.

The fact that so much importance is being placed upon the return of Andy Carroll is a reasonable gauge of their desperation.

Their captain, Kevin Nolan, pluckily parroted the party line, describing the day as ‘a fantastic team performance’, an assessment which says everything about current standards in this part of east London.

For the team seem woefully short of the basic essentials for avoiding relegation; from creative ability, to inspirational leadership, to the basic organisation of admittedly limited resources.
Sam Allardcye: Anybody could have won that game

Allardyce had earlier blamed ‘the outside world’ for creating relegation pressure, as if his players would otherwise be unaware of their predicament. Three victories all season tells its own tale, and it is in these kind of matches, against fellow-strugglers, that they have to find their points. Their search is becoming increasingly forlorn.

Albion stand-in manager Keith Downing was markedly less pressurised, like a man who knows he is highly unlikely to land the full-time job. He reflected that it ‘might have been a good game to watch’, but, with a masterly piece of understatement, he conceded: ‘I can’t say I’m satisfied with the way the team defended.’

He spoke of ‘tired legs’ which affected decision-making, but he knew he had done the very best he could in his situation. His reluctance to seek personal advantage was entirely to his credit.

He had looked a good deal less sanguine in the fourth minute, when his defence were caught square as West Ham pressed hesitantly forward. A short ball was worked to Joe Cole, and his finish revived memories of those days when he looked a major talent in the making.

West Ham lost James Tomkins with a groin injury in the tenth minute but their better, more inventive, players, like Cole and Mohamed Diame, maintained the balance of control until the 40th minute.

Their defending had always hinted at catastrophe, and it arrived when Chris Blunt shovelled a resourceful pass between a couple of laughably square defenders, leaving Anelka to go loping in for a goal of the utmost simplicity. It was his first in the Premier League since scoring for Chelsea, against Albion, in August 2011.

Five minutes later, in added time, West Bromwich won a disputed corner on the left. Carlton Cole took the ball off his line in the subsequent tussle but Anelka came looming in and nudged the ball into the net.

MAKING A LASTING IMPRESSION...

Carlton Cole and Saido Berahino made their mark on Saturday’s game for different reasons.

West Ham’s Cole left a nasty gash on Jonas Olsson’s left thigh after catching him with a raised leg, while Berahino had plenty to celebrate after earning a point for Albion.
Blood marks: The gashes down Jonas Olsson's legs

Silence descended, swiftly followed by plaintive abuse. Although West Ham looked more purposeful with the introduction of Modibo Maiga, West Bromwich forced the better of the chances. Yet they conceded an equaliser after 65 minutes when Maiga whipped in a left-foot effort which bounced in front of Ben Foster and tunnelled its way into the far corner.

It was the signal for a few moments of madness. In the 67th minute, West Ham were ahead again, with Maiga nodding down a chance inside the box and Nolan twisting his body to score.

But equality was restored when Berahino drifted into the box, exploited the absence of tackles and shot across Jussi Jaaskelainen.

West Brom then seemed likely to score with every attack, never more than when Berahino struck that post but the points were shared and the tension is lifted by another notch. Come the start of May, it could well feel unbearable.

Available: West Ham could sell Ravel Morrison (left) next month

West Ham United prepared to sacrifice Ravel Morrison in pursuit of new January signings

West Ham United are prepared to sell Ravel Morrison in the January transfer window to boost the funds to strengthen Sam Allardyce’s injury-ravaged squad.

Allardyce’s position as manager is not under threat despite West Ham being in the bottom three and money will be made available when the window opens even if Morrison is not sold.

However, it is understood that the 20-year-old midfielder, who has 18 months left on his current contract, can go if an acceptable bid is tabled.

West Ham have already received enquiries over Morrison.

The player’s current deal is complicated and West Ham would like to renegotiate it if he does stay.

The real issue with Big Sam

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Stoke City v Blackburn Rovers - Britannia StadiumAfter witnessing West Ham show four minutes of passion during the West Bromwich Albion match, I wonder if there is anything any manager could do with our resources and “unluckiness”?

How unlucky are injuries? They are inevitable. Everyone gets them; it depends on how important the player is to your team. It is more than likely that we would be in far less trouble had we had Andy Carroll from the beginning of the season. Then losing Winston Reid and Stewart Downing through injury after impressing in previous matches.

We therefore have over £20million worth of summer signings who have missed large parts and in Carroll’s case, the entire season. Last season’s rock and Hammer of the Year, Winston Reid, started the season in a strong manner and has joined the injury list for a long stay.

Among other injuries, Sam Allardyce faced West Brom in a crunch game, missing some of the most important players in the squad. I raise the question; What would (enter the best manager in world football’s name) do with our resources? Four full backs in defence. No Ravel Morrison to change the game. An unnatural wide-man. A fatiguing captain. Does the problem lie with Sam?

I appreciate all of the above and I know that we have been relatively unlucky compared to other Premier League sides; however, the lack of passion shown by Sam is something, which really gets under my skin.

We had a short while where the players and fans where fighting for the same cause. A lapse in defending stopped that momentum in its tracks. Allardyce was largely slumped in his chair, and probably noting down the statistics. The game of football is far more fluid than I believe “Big Sam” gives it credit for. You can have all the stats and all the figures, but passion and belief have to be installed internally. Knowing that Nicolas Anelka likes to shift the ball onto his right foot 76.4% of the time matters little when a ball falls to his feet 5 yards out. It’s like West Ham haven’t planned to concede with a bit of luck against them.

I thought the players had managed to break out of the “boring” statistic mind-set, and perhaps they did for the three minutes which brought two West Ham goals.

What separates the relegated sides come the end of the season, and the sides who stay up, is fight and passion. Unless Sam Allardyce can install that in the players he has available then he has to go. Get a manager in who will fire the players up, however that doesn’t mean a manager who will abandon all tactics (Paolo Di Canio).

What do you think? Time for Big Sam to go for the good of the team? OR Big Sam to stay as the unluckiness has been just that – unlucky?

Allardyce: Most of my January targets have snubbed West Ham

Sam Allardyce concedes "most" of West Ham's initial January transfer targets will not be heading to Upton Park.

Allardyce's squad has been ravaged by injuries this season, with defender James Tomkins the latest to join the growing casualty list after being withdrawn after 11 minutes of the 3-3 draw with West Brom on Saturday with a groin problem.

The West Ham manager has spoken openly of his desire to strengthen next month, but has now revealed that some players he is keen on have either snubbed a move to the Premier League strugglers or are in talks with other clubs.

"I have to say that disappointingly from our point of view, most of the targets we hoped to sign by January 2 are now not available, having either decided not to join us or ventured on a new negotiation elsewhere," Allardyce told the club's official website.

"We've been at it for six weeks now and my need is ever more desperate than the position we're in for new players in January, but our desire to get new players in has fallen because most clubs don't want to loan players or let them go.

"We hope we will get new recruits but they have to be good enough.

"If I pick a player who is not good enough then everybody will destroy him before he starts, so I need to pick a player who can hit the ground running from the start and do the business from the beginning. That's the issue.

"We didn't want to have to sign any players in January but it looks like we might have to.

"More important than recruiting new players is getting our injured players fit as soon as possible."

Bizarre clause revealed in West Ham ace’s contract

In a world dominated by agents, nothing tends to surprise me in football, as those guys will do absolutely anything to squeeze every penny possible out of a deal.

However, the latest clause to emerge in Ravel Morrison’s contract is, not only a bizarre one, but also a worrying one.

The Telegraph is reporting that, should West Ham receive a £10 million plus bid for the England U-21 international, then the Hammers are forced to quadruple Morrison’s wage.

The former Manchester United is believed to earn nearly £15,000-a-week which means – if my mathematics are correct – he will stand to pocket almost £60,000-a-week.

This latest news comes just a month or so after his £18 million release fee clause was reported. You have to wonder, especially with the possibility of relegation growing, how much longer the Irons can hold onto their rising star?

Allardyce still hopeful of landing Southampton striker.

Saints Striker Rickie Lambert Still High On West Ham Wish List

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce is still hopeful of being able to bring Southampton striker Rickie Lambert to Upton Park on loan next month, according to reports in Sports Direct News.

The Hammers boss is a known admirer of the England international and has already made an official enquiry into the 31-year-old’s availability come the new year.

The Saints have not ruled out a potential loan deal for the Liverpool-born forward, though they did reject an initial advance from West Ham over the summer, who turned their attentions to Andy Carroll after seeing an £8m bid rejected.

Lambert has largely being playing second fiddle to summer signing Dani Osvaldo this season, but has still managed to clock up eight goals so far, though that has not stopped reports linking the club with another unnamed striker during the January transfer window, and therefore may consider allowing Lambert to exit the club on a short term basis.

A club source said: “Rickie has always been high on our list of preferred targets – we have to have better than we’ve got.

“But it’s about everything falling into place at the right time. If Saints get the striker they want, we have a decent chance on Lambert.

“We have about ten targets. Rickie is right up there. Another might well be Nicklas bendtner were Arsenal to make him available.”

Sullivan and Gold Sleepwalk towards the Championship

After failing in the self-proclaimed and latest of the ‘must win’ games, Allardyce can rest easy tonight and for the foreseeable future. You see, whilst all of our major competitors’ owners have seen fit to relinquish their managers of their responsibilities, with the resultant improvement in virtually all of them, Gold and Sullivan pride themselves on their loyalty and conviction and will, like their manager does with his captain, stick with their man through thin and thinner.

Saturday’s match was a game between two very poor teams, let’s be clear about that. Having gained an early advantage through a well worked goal between Nolan and Joe Cole, West Ham failed to create another meaningful chance in a first half of insipid and uninspired tippy-tappy. The result was that West Bromwich Albion grew in confidence as the half progressed and, Nikolas Anelka found himself in the currently unusual position of helping himself to two goals inside 4 minutes as half time approached.

In truth, Allardyce does at least have a point in terms of our current injury crisis. Losing Tomkins half way through the first half left us with 4 full backs marshaling the central and wide defensive positions and we looked consequently vulnerable to just about any attack, even by an outfit as poor as WBA.

It was pleasing to see Maiga grab a goal after the break, particularly since he had clearly made a considerable impact once on for the hapless Carlton Cole at half time. The sponsors’ decision to award him man of the match was typically Champagne-quaffing-induced but nonetheless he was a considerable improvement on the player that some are still advocates for in the forward position.

I cannot pretend that I was pleased to see Nolan score. He remains a passenger in this team but, as we know, is considered to be the jewel in the crown by our deluded manager.

This is a Championship side, make no mistake. Of the players on display on Saturday, only Jarvis and Noble looked in any way premiership standard.

It’s January soon. Failure to buy effectively will see us relegated in May. Reliance on the other teams around us, of which granted there is some equal dross, is a dodgy game to play. Nonetheless, it’s the game that Sullivan and Gold seem resolved to play.

How’s ya luck?

Results: Player Performances v WBA

A sight many of us never thought we’d see – Maiga at the top of the chart. Well done to him. it clearly meant a lot to him as we became very emotional after he scored and could be seen wiping tears away from his eyes. Good to see Matt Jarvis near the top too. He did well today.

He is going to be one of the best strikers for England in the coming years. I like the kid he's taken a nice pay increase to 15k per week isn't greedy and wants to repay West Brom for giving him a chance and England for allowing his family to settle here when he was 10 years old.

I've not seen him out and about (in the rags) acting flash covered in tattoo's and trying to live like a rockstar. I hope he keeps a level head and stays ambitious.

Really refreshing to see from a young player.

Tough times: West Ham boss Allardyce is under pressure and his side are in a relegation scrap

Carroll boost for Hammers as chairman makes Golden announcement that striker is nearing return from injury nightmare

West Ham chairman David Gold has revealed that Andy Carroll should be back in action within two to three weeks.

The England striker has been sidelined all season with an ankle injury, leaving the Hammers desperately short in front of goal.

Carroll has undergone specialist rehabilitation in Antwerp, Belgium and the £15million signing is finally nearing his comeback, according to a Twitter post from Gold.

Carroll himself tweeted on Sunday morning, hinting that his injury comeback is imminent: 'The time is near..!' said the striker.

Gold also revealed that Stewart Downing, who suffered an Achilles injury against Liverpool, is three to four weeks away from his return.

Sam Allardyce is under growing pressure as West Ham manager and his side are warming the basement of the Premier League in 19th position.

Carroll and Downing will provide a major boost to their relegation scrap but Gold revealed defender Winston Reid may not make his return until late February.

Ricardo Vaz Te faces another month of recovery from a shoulder injury as the London side consider a move in the January transfer window for striker reinforcements.

Return dates for James Tomkins and James Collins are unknown.

Yeah, because welcoming the kid to Upton Park is really going to help.

I want players to be frightened to play in front of our supporters at the Boleyn, like in the old days, not cheered when scoring against us..
