Big miss: Carroll's absence has been felt by the Irons

Under fire: The pressure is on Big Sam after a string of poor results

West Ham wouldn't be in a relegation scrap if Andy Carroll was fit, says Sam Allardcye

Sam Allardyce reckons West Ham would not be battling the drop had he been able to call upon Andy Carroll this season.

The West Ham manager is under intense pressure to turn things around and will rush back his £15m striker at Cardiff.

Carroll has not featured since making his moving to Upton Park permanent after twice sustaining heel injuries. And despite the need to ease the forward back into the fold, Allardyce is set to name him on the bench on Saturday.

“No, I don’t think so,” said Allardyce when asked if his team would be in such disarray with a fit and firing Carroll.

“The game time on a lot of our major players is less than 50 per cent in most cases. That’s difficult for a club like ours, losing the core strength from its major players.

“Squads have to step in and step up to the mark, but on a long-term basis that becomes more difficult, particularly with more injuries setting in.”

Allardyce emailed the club’s supporters promising to “get angry and come out fighting” after the 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City.

The rallying cry came in the wake of the second public backing in a week that co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan had felt the need to issue to irate supporters.

The fans’ frustrations are understandable with their team sat 19th in the league and with just one win in their last 13 matches. And after conceding 11 goals in two cup matches this week – including five against Nottingham Forest – Allardyce has turned to Carroll to provide him with a timely boost.

“I always say that, in the end, the most important thing is that your leading front man will be 50 per cent of your team or more,” he added.

“If there’s nothing wrong with the injury any more, it’s a calculated risk with him in the squad trying to get time on the field.

“It’s a lack of match fitness. As long as they’re saying the injury’s completely healed and it’s all about his match fitness, it may be a risk or a gamble worth taking.

“It depends on Andy, how he feels. Certainly it’s more about him being back in the squad than actually playing.

“The lift of having our major investment, a fantastic centre-forward, a great target man and a really good goalscorer... that’s a boost for everyone, just having him back, given where we are at the moment.

“It’s a boost for the fans and the players. We’ve waited so long and so patiently for this moment to come.

“We all want him back but you can’t put the player at too much risk by trying to play him when he’s not ready.”

Big Sam hopeful his big man can fire West Ham out of trouble

Sam Allardyce may be forced into ''calculated risk'' by bringing Andy Carroll back early from injury

West Ham's under-fire boss Sam Allardyce has admitted he may be forced into a "calculated risk" in accelerating Andy Carroll's return to the first team as the Hammers face Cardiff this weekend.

The relegation strugglers are without a Premier league win since the end of November - a 3-0 victory over Fulham - and have dropped to second bottom in the table.

And speaking ahead of Saturday's game, the Hammers boss says he could rush his £15million signing back from injury - but only after consulting medical staff.

He explained: "Andy is training ok and we have to talk to the lads who are looking after him on whether he's ready or not.

"We'll look at him in training today and then take a decision from there. It may be a calculated risk I'm prepared to take."

Allardyce was hounded by travelling fans at the Etihad on Wednesday night in the Capital One Cup tie where he saw his side beaten 6-0 by a rampant Manchester City side, following on from their 5-0 FA Cup defeat at the hands of Championship side Nottingham Forest.

The former Newcastle man hit seven league goals for the Hammers last season during a loan spell from Liverpool, while last season's top scorer, Kevin Nolan, has struggled and is currently suspended after his second red card in a matter of weeks.

West Ham, in 19th position, head to fellow strugglers Cardiff, themselves in 17th just four points above the east London club in what will be new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first taste of Premier League management - having guided the Bluebirds to FA Cup victory over Newcastle United last weekend.

Allardyce added: "My most important two games now are Cardiff City and Newcastle, before we get to the second leg. That is the biggest and major concern for me, getting up and getting the lads ready for that."

Fulham set to make £7.5m bid for Morrison with young star ready to quit West Ham

The youngster's Hammers contract runs out at the end of next

West Ham are braced for another blow, with Fulham set to make a £7.5million approach for Ravel Morrison and fellow midfielder Mohamed Diame.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is under huge pressure heading into Saturday's trip to Cardiff. He will be loath to lose Morrison but, as Sportsmail revealed on Friday, the former Manchester United youngster is unsettled at Upton Park and has told friends he is ready to quit the struggling club.

Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen, who worked with Morrison at United’s academy, is hoping to complete a double swoop before the end of the month.

The Dutchman refused to be drawn on a bid for Morrison but, when asked if the England Under 21 star was a player who needed special attention, he said: ‘Yes. It’s our responsibility as a coach to create the right environment. Ravel is a very talented player. He loves football and is a delight to coach.’

Morrison’s contract at West Ham expires at the end of next season and he is reluctant to sign a new one.

The Manchester-born midfielder announced his arrival on the Premier League stage with a stunning solo goal in West Ham’s win at Spurs in October.

And Meulensteen says he always expected as much from Morrison. ‘It’s not a surprise that he’s flourished and is doing well,’ he added. ‘There is so much more to come from him.

‘When you’re a young player and you’ve proved that you can play at this level then you want to get playing; you want to keep on going.’

Fulham, who entertain Sunderland this afternoon, will also look to include Diame in the deal. The Senegal midfielder is also out of contract next summer and Meulensteen said: ‘Any player that could be interesting for us and would really, really strengthen us, we will have a good look at.

‘It would be daft not to, that’s why the transfer windows are there. If things can be done and it’s possible then we’ll look at it like any other club.’

Fulham’s Costa Rica forward Bryan Ruiz will be allowed to leave — he is in talks with Real Betis over a loan move — but Meulensteen is keen to retain leading goalscorer Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian looks set to return to the starting line-up today, and his manager said: ‘If he left, we would lose quality, experience, that special aspect that makes him stand out from the others. He can do things, turn things on, pull things out the hat. He is an exceptional player.’

Fulham have won two from three in the league to move two points clear of the drop zone and Meulensteen said: ‘The quality has been there and it is starting to pay off. Hopefully that will be the same against Sunderland, this is a huge game for us.’

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s Vito Mannone admits their form is even baffling the players.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper, who made several key saves in Tuesday’s 2-1 Capital One Cup semi-final victory over Manchester United, said: ‘It is a funny game. Somehow we produce great performances against the big clubs. We all talk with each other and we can’t find the reason why we don’t beat the teams around us.

‘We were told to enjoy the semi-final because we had nothing to lose in a game against one of the best teams in the country. We have to approach every game in the same way. I am tired of saying we have the team to compete, good ability and a good squad.

'You can tell when we play these games that we don’t beat these big clubs with luck. That’s four in a row.

‘We need to have the same attitude against the smaller teams. The smaller teams maybe put 10 bodies behind the ball, and it’s more open against the better teams. We have to survive and give our all.

‘Fulham is definitely more important now. We have to compete and make sure we take three points.’

Welcome return: West Ham's record signing Andy Carroll in training on Thursday

Big Sam for the chopper? Under-fire West Ham boss finally toppled as 'G-OLDO' comes in to land his helicopter at the training ground

Sam Allardyce is battling to save West Ham's season - and possibly his job - and co-owner David Gold decided this was the right time to make a flying visit to the training ground.

Big Sam was spotted rolling around on the floor at the club's Chadwell Heath base not long before Gold arrived, piloting a helicopter, landing on one of the pitches.

Surely the joint-chairman wasn't targeting his manager, who has lost five of the last six matches and seen his side concede 11 goals in the last two games?

The West Ham manager has included Andy Carroll in the squad for the crucial match at Cardiff on Saturday.

Allardyce is desperate for a change in fortune and has turned to the England striker despite him not playing a game this season.

'If everything goes OK and according to plan, I'll make a final decision from the information I get,' he said.

'He's feeling fine and training well, but he's not played since last May. He'll not have his match fitness.

'Ideally, we'd like to progress it a little slower but, based on the circumstances and where we are, it'll be a calculated risk.'
Allardyce: Andy Carroll could feature in the squad for Cardiff

Carroll is not expected to start against Cardiff due to severely lacking match fitness.

Speaking later on talkSPORT, Allardyce confirmed Carroll would get game time: 'We've had a little boost today that Andy Carroll gets into the squad for the first time this season,' he said.

'That'll lift everybody. He'll be on the bench and will play a small part at some stage because obviously he hasn't kicked any footballs or been in a match for a very long time.

'We think it's a small gamble worth taking having got the all-clear in terms of his injury.'

Allardyce is boosted by the availability of centre back James Tomkins and Roger Johnson is set to make his Premier League debut for the club. West Ham have struggled to field recognised central defenders recently due to injuries.

Allardyce is not expected to be sacked if he loses to Cardiff, but another hammering is likely to cost him his job.

'I'll talk about that after we've played Cardiff,' he added.

'I'm still here and I'm still fighting. We're in a situation where, on the outside world, one result is the most important thing: if it's for us the pressure's relieved. If not, it increases.'

i must say it was very nice of mr gold to get his chopper out at chadwell heath i bet everyone one was impressed with it

Andy Carroll is closing in on a return to action Andy Carroll is closing in on a return to action

Carroll return will boost Allardyce

West Ham have been fighting for survival with "50 per cent" of their team missing according to manager Sam Allardyce, who played up the impact of Andy Carroll's injury on the club's current fortunes.

The 25-year-old England international has yet to play this season after struggling to overcome two similar foot injuries, with the Hammers badly missing his contributions.

Without Carroll, West Ham have slipped to 19th in the Barclays Premier League and have been on the receiving end of cup thrashings from Nottingham Forest and Manchester City in the last week.

The former Liverpool man, who was initially on loan at Upton Park last season, is likely to be in the squad which travels to face fellow strugglers Cardiff on Saturday and Allardyce is looking forward to getting his talismanic figure back amongst his squad.

"I always say that in the end the most important thing is that your leading front man will be 50 per cent of your team or more," he said.

"It was proven to be the case for me when I signed Nicolas Anelka from Fenerbahce for Bolton. That was more than 50 per cent of the continuing success we gained from there on.

"In some cases, the squad behind Nicolas got a bit weaker than it used to be, by players getting older and retiring, like Youri Djorkaeff and Jay-Jay Okocha, but with Nicolas there we ended up competing in the Champions League spots. We've been without Andy all season. With him, we'd be an awful lot better."

Allardyce made comparisons to other Premier League clubs, in particular Manchester United, who have suffered a downturn in form with both Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie sidelined with injuries.

He said: "If United's demise is down to some of the results not going for them, it's because Van Persie and Rooney haven't been there.

"[Manchester] City's whole team is brilliant, but they've got so many great finishers it makes it easier for them to win matches. They put the ball in the net more than anyone else.

"You can't find more than one great finisher if you're us. Even Arsenal, with [Olivier] Giroud, don't have too much more after that. What would Liverpool be without Luis Suarez? They coped very well before that, but have scored even more since he's been back. How difficult would it be without him?"

Carroll has not been rushed back into first-team action despite the Hammers not winning a league match since November but could be on the bench for the crunch match at Cardiff.

Allardyce believes Carroll is champing at the bit to return and, if he does feature, will not shirk the physical challenge of being back in action.

"Mentally he's fine," Allardyce added.

"He is frustrated and eager to get back as quickly as he can. We've had to keep him calm and focused on the time it's going to take to make sure it's right.

"I don't know whether Andy can play 'within himself'. When he's on the field, he's on the field. All thoughts of injury leave him. It's about passion for playing football."

A win would see West Ham move above Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Bluebirds in the table but would not necessarily take them out of the relegation zone.

The Hammers are coming to the end of a full-blown injury crisis, with Carroll's return coinciding with James Tomkins and Ricardo Vaz Te approaching full fitness.

Allardyce has cited his long injury list over the festive period as the main reason for West Ham's plight and believes, with a few January additions, that his squad is good enough to survive.

"If I'd had a fully fit squad for the Christmas period and the cup games and the results had gone badly, I'd be really, really worried then," he said.

"But I'm confident we'll get the players back fitness and add to that. We've got Roger Johnson in with all his experience from the Premier League, and he knows what the task is and how difficult it is at this level. He's experienced it with Birmingham. He can also draw on his experience at Wolves."

WHAT SAM'S BEEN MISSING: Carroll celebrates a goal last season

West Ham's crisis is down to Andy Carroll's absence according to Sam Allardyce

SAM ALLARDYCE reckons he wouldn't be fighting for his job had West Ham's record-signing Andy Carroll been fit this season.

The striker has not played a single game since his £15m permanent move to Upton Park in the summer, missing more than five months with two heel injuries.

And Allardyce admits that Carroll is far from fully fit for today's relegation tussle at Cardiff.

But the England international will return to the bench and could be risked as his under-fire manager looks for a timely lift.

Strength When asked directly if the Hammers would have been battling relegation with a firing Carroll in their line-up, Allardyce said: "No, I don't think so "The game-time for a lot of our major players is less than 50 per cent. That's difficult for a club like ours, losing the core strength from its major players.

"Squads have to step in and step up to the mark, but on a long-term basis that becomes more difficult - particularly with more injuries setting in."

The Hammers have had a disastrous week after shipping 11 goals in the two cup competitions. But Allardyce has refused to apologise to the club's supporters for the thrashings, despite e-mailing them, vowing to "get angry and come out fighting".

Big Sam knows he could face the sack if his side lose at Cardiff and that is why he is prepared to throw ex-Newcastle star Carroll in if things look bad.

"I always say that, in the end, the most important thing is that your leading frontman will be 50 per cent of your team or more," he said.

"If there's nothing wrong with the injury any more, it's a calculated risk, with him in the squad trying to get time on the field.

“We have been in need for Andy for so many weeks now,”
Sam Allardyce, West Ham United manager

"It's a lack of match fitness. As long as they are saying the injury is completely healed and it's all about his match fitness, it may be a gamble worth taking.

"It depends on Andy, how he feels.

Certainly it is more about him being back in the squad than actually playing.

"The lift of having our major investment, a fantastic centre-forward, a great target man and a really good goalscorer - that is a boost for everyone - just having him back.

Difficult "In terms of game-time, if chosen as a sub, it would be very little. Hopefully he wouldn't be needed. It is a boost for the fans and the players. We have waited so long and so patiently for this moment to come.

"It has been a difficult period because of the Andy situation, it has been on-going for so, so long. Sometimes you wonder if it will ever end.

"We have been in need for Andy for so many weeks now, that the temptation is to try and rush these things.

"We all want him back, but you can't put the player at too much risk by trying to play him when he is not ready."

Andy Carroll’s foot injury has prevented him playing for West Ham since his £15m summer move from Liverpool.

Sam Allardyce has no regrets about blowing budget on Andy Carroll
• West Ham told there was only a 4% chance of injury recurring
• Striker could be on bench for dogfight at Cardiff City

Sam Allardyce does not regret ploughing the vast bulk of last summer's transfer budget into the pursuit of Andy Carroll, a player who has yet to kick a ball in anger this season, as West Ham United prepare to welcome the England striker back to the bench for their critical Premier League game at Cardiff.

West Ham spent a club record £15m to make Carroll's loan move from Liverpool permanent despite the 25-year-old having torn the lateral plantar fascia on the outside of his right foot during the final game of last season. According to Allardyce, West Ham were told there was a "4%" chance of a recurrence of the injury, only for the forward to rupture the medial tendon in the same foot in September. He has since spent time with a specialist in Antwerp as part of a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

Yet Carroll has trained well over the last two weeks, with the manager – desperate to improve the mood after one league win in 13 matches and successive 5-0 and 6-0 defeats in the domestic cup competitions – prepared to take the "calculated risk" to restore him to the bench at Cardiff. "If we had our time over again, would we have signed him? Yes, on the information we had," Allardyce said. "It appeared that the risk of re-injury was about 4%. Unfortunately, for us and for him, Andy became one of the 4%. I don't think we'd be in this position if we'd had him fit.

"In the end, your leading front man will (influence) 50% of your team or more. It was proven to be the case for me when I signed Nicolas Anelka for Bolton from Fenerbahce: he contributed to more than 50% of the success we gained from then on. In some cases, the squad behind Nicolas got a bit weaker than it used to be, by players getting older and retiring like Fernando Hierro, Youri Djorkaeff and Jayjay Okocha. But with Nicolas there we ended up competing for the Champions League spots and targeting the top five or six, because he scored goals for us.

"If Manchester United's results are not going for them right now, it's because Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney haven't been there. Manchester City's whole team is brilliant but they've got so many great finishers it makes it easier for them to win matches. They put the ball in the net more than anyone else. How difficult would it be without him? We've been without Andy all season. With him, we'd be an awful lot better."

West Ham travel to Cardiff to confront the side immediately above the cut-off with Allardyce's position effectively on the line, for all the messages of support issued this week by the co-chairmen, David Gold and David Sullivan.

The return of James Tomkins from injury has been offset by the loss of Joey O'Brien to a knock suffered at the Etihad Stadium, where the club's support made clear their desire for managerial change. The hope remains that James Collins, Ricardo Vaz Tê – who returned for the under-21s on Friday night – and Winston Reid should all be back in training before the end of the month.

There should be reinforcements by then, too, though Lacina Traoré's work permit request will go to a tribunal next week, while West Ham must still convince Parma to allow them to take Ishak Belfodil on loan from Internazionale. The former own a 50% stake in the player.

"It's been a tough few weeks but I'm still here and I'm still fighting," Allardyce said. "All I do is say why we are where we are, why results are bad. If I'd had a fully fit squad for the Christmas period and the cup games and the results had gone badly, I'd be really worried. I'm confident we'll get the players back to fitness and add to that.

Waiting to make a mark: Andy Carroll has yet to appear for West Ham since signing for them permanently

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce defends decision to bring in record signing Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll is set to return to the West Ham substitutes’ bench at Cardiff, having failed to play a single game since making his £15 million permanent move to Upton Park in the summer
Andy Carroll - West Ham manager Sam Allardyce defends decision to sign Andy Carroll

Sam Allardyce insists he was right to blow his West Ham budget on Andy Carroll and would sign the striker with an injury again.

Carroll is set to return to the West Ham substitutes’ bench at Cardiff, having failed to play a single game since making his £15 million permanent move to Upton Park in the summer.

Allardyce was told Carroll would return from his heel injury by September. But the 25-year-old, who earns around £80,000-a-week, has sat out the entire first half of the season, leaving West Ham woefully short of strikers.

Rather than trying to secure a backup forward in time for the start of the campaign with his remaining £6m, Allardyce signed winger Stewart Downing.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan admitted he would not have sanctioned a move for Carroll if he had known the former Liverpool man would be out for so long.

Fulham plot move for West Ham duo

Mohamed DiameFulham are at it again but this time they want Ravel Morrison AND Mohamed Diame, report the Daily Express.

There were rumours earlier in the week that the Cottagers had bid £5 million for Morrison and that the former Manchester United midfielder was keen on the move – those reports have since been rubbished by the player.

You’d imagine a club would’ve have to bid north of £10 million for Ravel for the board to even consider selling. However, we are powerless in stopping Diame leaving with that bloomin’ release fee clause still hanging around.

An interesting snippet from the Express re: Diame is that he has apparently been unsettled at Upton Park for a while and wants a new £75,000-a-week contract.

Former West Ham United player and Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio

Italian dreams of Hammers return

Ex-Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio is reportedly open to taking over at his former club West Ham United if the Hammers dismiss under-pressure boss Sam Allardyce.

Italian source Tutto Sport claims the fiery Italian, a cult hero at Upton Park since his playing days, is “dreaming of a return”.

The revelation comes hot on the heels of West Ham supporters singing his name throughout Wednesday night’s 6-0 loss at Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final, first leg.

While Allardyce received public support from his board earlier in the week, the manager himself today admitted that results have to improve to prevent patience running out in the corridors of power.

He also risked alienating Hammers fans even further by refusing to apologise to them during a press conference.

The City thrashing followed a 5-0 reverse at Nottingham Forest, which saw Allardyce’s side crash out of the FA Cup at the third round stage.

Rush Carroll back? Maybe his heel has mended but if his body isn't ready for a match I can see a hamstring injury coming.

Cheers CH  why would we even consider selling two players, not just to another premier league club but to a direct relegation rival, is beyond me, especially when no half about replacements would seem to touch us with a bargepole

Cheers CH I read your news every day and never say thank you

So thank you :-)

I feel a bit sorry for AC his first game back and Sam has already pilled the pressure on him by saying if he was fit we wouldn't be in a relegation battle , while this is true he should have let AC settle back in for a few weeks at least.

Chhers CH

We start selling our remaining first team players - we are doomed.

What a mess. Sad thing is - we could all see it coming.
