C2C to stop at Stratford

Post by Basildon WHU »

C2C have been awarded a new 15 year franchise to run the line and from December 2015 have plans to have a quarter of the weekend trains stop at Stratford and onto Liverpool St. Good news for some including me.

Good news yes.

But -

A quarter of trains will mean only one per hour for stations from West Horndon to Pitsea,.
And it will mean 25% fewer trains serving West Ham for those who may prefer a walk than a queue to get into Stratford station.

may not be that bad because they also plan to have an extra 438 trains every week (over 21% on a weekend)

Brownout... how you can pick the negatives out of that is beyond me.

It is great news for anyone along the Barking, Dagenham, Hornchurch, Upminster, Pitsea and Chafford route which are all clear hot bed areas of West Ham support.

It depends on the queues to get into Stratford station. If it takes 20 minutes to queue for Stratford station it will be quicker to walk to West Ham. A few trains from Stratford and a few less from West Ham won't help those who choose to walk rather than queue, although will help most travelling outward to games from the C2C area. It is good that some C2C trains will call at Stratford but maybe not 100% positive.

In all seriousness, we have no idea how the queues will affect the Stratford station. But there are more platforms and lines going to various parts of London / South East via differing forms of rail network (tube, regional, DLR, crossrail etc..) it's a moot point until witnessed. Also remember there are other stations to filter to as is the case at the home now (east ham, plaistow)
With regard extra the service to Stratford for C2C this has to make it easier quicker and possibly cheaper without having to change to the tube at West Ham station.

True, we can speculate all we want but I suspect it may even take a season or two to settle down. If there are long queues some people will start walking to other stations or leaving early.

This is a good point, for those on the direct C2C line there will be no tube journey so presumably cheaper.

But if most of the C2C punters have gone to Stratford then you'll even get a seat on the West Ham C2C trains

We have a string idea with how the station coped with the games which held more people

They will increase trains per hour to say 10 and have 2 per hour go to Liverpool street, maybe the rain ham service will go there? I mean people can change at barking for fen church street

Yep those are the ones I was referring to, there were talks a few years back but I haven't heard anything for a while.

It would be excellent if they did!

Good news.

C2C by far the best service I've used. Even if it was only from Upminster to Fenchurch St every two weeks.

Much better than the East Coast jobbies.

The reason that DB have not started their service yet is because the ICE3 trains they had planned on using did not meet the line's safety requirements. They are fixed formation EMU's and couldn't be uncoupled in the tunnel in case of emergency, and also they are distributed traction, which means even if they were uncoupled, there would be no powered loco at each end to get the train out of the tunnel.

Although the regulations have now changed to allow EMUs with distributed traction, they also didn't have the fire proofing required either.

DB have since placed an order for a new fleet of ICE trains, the Velaro D, which do meet the safety requirements and services to Frankfurt, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam via Brussels will start next year.

On a side note, Eurostar have also ordered a fleet of the 16 car version of the Velaro D to replace and work alongside it's current fleet of TGV based trains, whilst Spanish operator RENFE has also shown an interest in running AVE services from Spain to London via Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Madrid and Lisbon using the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line now its AVE network is connected to France via the Barcelona to Figueras and Perpignan to Figueras lines.
