Re: Sports Personality of the Year 2008
It seems a relatively low-key shortlist this year? Should probably be Geraint Thomas or Lizzie Yarnold I think.
Definitely don't think Kane should win it. He's had another great year and is a top pro, but thought he was quite disappointing in the WC (despite winning the golden boot!).

Being one of the very lucky thousands of Brits on Alpe D’Huez, Geraint Thomas taking that honour is a superb achievement for him and cycling

Geraint Thomas, Jimmy Anderson are Lewis Hamilton are my 3 top British Sportsmen so was a pretty good shortlist.
Very happy G won.

Aside of the undoubted sporting prowess that is showcased, what an absolutely s**t show this has become.
I used to enjoy this show as a bit of a highlight of the year but recently, and in particular tonight, it is dire. The format, venue, direction, etc. Is terrible.

Added to the list of god awful programmes the bbc force us to pay for, which have become more vehicles for
their social politics.... see the multi-million pound we have have paid for a new Eastenders set....
What does it actually mean "sports personality of the year"?
If they carried out winning the tour de france whilst telling jokes i'd be happy with it.

Re: Sports Personality of the Year 2008
As pleased as I am that the winner came from Wales the shortlist was hardly inspiring - someone who rides a bike or someone who drives a car fast - I haven't seen a single race he's competed in , I haven't any interest in the sport and as for Lewis Hamilton , how can he even appeal to anyone , I think I've heard him speak twice and the sport he competes has become so elitist there's very little chance of your average working class kid competing any more [ yes I know Lewis Hamilton grew up in a council flat ] .
Who on here honestly watched Geraint Thomas this year , come on , hands up ?
I didn't watch last night's programme but I did see the Winner of their ' Unsung Hero ' hero award , Kirsty Ewen who coaches young kids at the Inverness Swimming Pool , somewhere we took our kids when they were young and still go on occasion , she was a breath of fresh air , a lovely lovely girl and a worthy winner .
Well done , Kirsty !

Re: Sports Personality of the Year 2008
I did - in fact I've followed his career closely for a number of years, both on the road and on track, being a big cycling fan and as he always came across as a very likeable guy, as well as a good servant to his team. He was nearly always the right-hand man to the leader so it was especially astonishing to see him come out and win one of the toughest sporting events in the World. The Old Man of Storr wrote: Who on here honestly watched Geraint Thomas this year , come on , hands up ?

Re: Sports Personality of the Year 2008
i did and have watched likewhitters his carreer blossom over the years and some cruel injuries curtail hisdevelopement at times, i as i already said above was on Alpe D'Huez, to watch him and the other lads finish on that historic mountain stage, to win that stage was monumental but to then win the Tour was fantastic and a testament to his hard work and talent
in the over 30 years ive followed cycling, we have so much as a nation to be proud of in such a short space of tie, our track cyclsts like cav , geraint, boardman wiggins etc etc took the sport to a new level in the arenas, but bit by bit they got rides at tour teams and the interest grew in cycling, when i started watching the tour, to have a brit in le grande depart was a huge achievement, these days our riders are all over the tour and the top players on it
with froome, thomas and the yates brothers and plenty of other talent coming through and already in the tour we as a countryare very lucky to have these lads, and creating a healthy nation as well as the uptake in cycling is huge for not only leisure but for commmuting as well as sport

Re: Sports Personality of the Year 2008
Bet Froome said "what the f***"
I personally would have liked one of the two ladies to win it, I think their achievements "slightly" outweigh the others, but in truth have no issue with Geraint winning it, anyone winning the tour has my upmost respect, it's brutal.
Thought it was a cracking show personally, TOMOS, rewatch the end, plus when Billy Monger was getting his award, look at how Lewis was with Billy's mum, and talking to the other contestants, he was spot on last night and I get why he gets some criticism, but he is a different guy to what he was.
