Fair enough if he wanted to leave but if i was BG i would have said I will try and get a replacement in for less or equal to the fee that we are going to recieve from your transfer, if we cant then you will have to wait till January.

I also don't see why someone who wants to leave, would sign a new 5 year contract...it's not like Sunderland were bidding any less at the time when he still had about 2/3 years left on it. Sorry, but this smells of the club selling him off.

I have a friend who has close connections with the communications officer at S***s. He's been right in the past, but also been wrong, so make of this what you will. A few hours ago I asked him for info and he told me that they'd put in a bid for Ashton and it was rejected as we had no intention of selling him. Their target was then switched to heskey. A couple of hours after that (at about 9pm) I got another text from him telling me that Heskey was off to Villa and another bid for Ashton had just gone in, as well as them wanting to sign Diarra.

As I said, make of that what you will.

Ive said it before and ill say it again , contracts dont mean a thing in this day and age, all it means is that the player gets an extra 10 k and thats all.

I agree that if a player signs a five-year deal then there's still little chance he will stay five years but it's unheard of for a player to sign one and leave a month later. I doubt he'd have thought 'right I'm going in a few weeks but I'll earn a few extra grand in the meantime'. No, when the deal was confirmed it was to kill off speculation of a move to Sunderland and a show of commitment to the club. I don't buy that he'd sign a contract while Sunderland are in for him then a month later change his mind and hand in a transfer request when the circumstances are identical. Unless of course the sale of Anton and the mugging off at Curbs has made him realise the club is going backwards and he'd be better off at Sunderland. Thinking about it, that sounds more likely.

Then the club would have said 'well it suits us to sell you but you can't make it public that you're leaving because you think Sunderland are a bigger club. Say this and then our fans will accept the sale and we'll let you move.'

Apparently, Spuds boards suggesting that the Club who wanted Barton was Portsmouth, meaning Diarra would go there.
