WEST HAM have emerged as the shock frontrunners in the race for Henrik Larsson.

Larsson, 36, is set to quit Helsingborgs and the Hammers have already made inquiries about the Sweden international.

The striker’s contract runs out at the end of the season and he could leave on a free in January or cost £1million now.

Everton are also eyeing the former Celtic ace, who was a big success on loan at Manchester United last season.

His agent Rob Jansen said: “Henrik is choosing his club and feels he can still do a job in the Premier League.”

Villa Raise Their Bid For Hammer Ashton

Although Martin O'Neill has already spent £48million on eight new players this summer - the latest recruit being James Milner from Newcstle United yesterday - he is willing to splash out more than £12million more to land West Ham striker Dean Ashton.

O'Neill has already had a bid of £12million rejected by West Ham, who are under orders from their owner to slash their huge wage bill. But he has put in an improved offer after another target, Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz, opted to commit his future to Rovers.

Former Crew Alexandra and Norwich City star Ashton, 24, signed a new five-year deal in June - but the pressures on the Hammers to cut costs have since intensified.

Ashton has indicated that he would only want to leave the Boleyn Ground if one of the Big Four, but with West Ham's financial problems getting worse, and Villa's ambitions clearly growing, there could be some movement.

The Hammers have recently shipped out Bobby Zamora, John Pantsil, Anton Ferdinand and Freddie Ljungberg to help balance their books.

Now O'Neill wants to test the club's resolve with a tempting cash offer for Ashton.

However, should he fail to land Ashton, the Mirror reckons he will turn his attentions towards Paris Saint-Germain's 29-year-old French striker Peguy Luyindula.

Aston Villa must splash the cash to sign West Ham Utd's Dean Ashton

Aug 31 2008 By Mat Kendrick

ASTON Villa have been warned that they will have to smash their transfer record for the second time in a week to tempt Dean Ashton away from West Ham.

The England striker has emerged as a prime target for Martin O’Neill who views the targetman as the final piece of the jigsaw in Villa’s push for a top four place.

But Ashton, who signed a new five-year deal at Upton Park in the summer, would command a fee nearer to £16m if West Ham could be persuaded to sell their prized asset.

Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has reportedly rejected Villa’s £12m bid for Ashton and is reluctant to part with him after being forced to sell Anton Ferdinand to Sunderland for £8m.

And sources close to Ashton say the 24-year-old will be unwilling to actively push for a move unless one of the established top four clubs make a late bid for his signature.

But O’Neill will be encouraged by the turnaround at Newcastle which allowed him to capture James Milner for a Villa club record fee believed to be around £12m on Friday despite the Geordie’s initial refusal to sell.

And the Villa boss is hoping to capitalise upon similar turmoil at West Ham where Curbishley is believed to be on borrowed time after cost-cutting by the Icelandic owners, who have also offloaded Bobby Zamora and Freddie Ljungberg.

O’Neill will hope his growing band of English talent will persuade former Crewe and Norwich forward Ashton to advance his international career at Villa Park.

Hammers eye Lazio man
Hammers keen to bolster defensive options

By Peter O'Rourke Last updated: 31st August 2008
Guglielmo Stendardo

West Ham are planning a beat-the-deadline move for Lazio defender Guglielmo Stendardo, skysports.com understands.

Stendardo's future at Lazio is uncertain with the central defender spending the second half of last season on loan at Juventus following a series of rows with coach Delio Rossi.

The 27-year-old is back at Lazio after Juve opted not to turn his loan move into a permanent deal.

A number of Italian sides have been linked with a move for the powerful defender, but now West Ham are ready to try and lure him to England.

The Hammers are in the market for a new defender, having sold Anton Ferdinand to Sunderland and they are exploring the option of bringing in Stendardo on loan.

West Ham will have to move quickly to land Stendardo on a season-long loan with the transfer window due to slam shut on midnight on Monday.

Chelsea full-back Paulo Ferreira is in talks over a possible move to West Ham, Sky Sports News understands.

The Portugal international, who joined the Blues in a £13.2million deal from Porto in 2004, signed a new five-year deal in February.

But the 29-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of compatriot Jose Bosingwa this summer, also from Porto.

West Ham are short of options at full-back with new Swiss winger Valon Behrami having had to fill in at right-back so far this season.

And Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has money to spend following Anton Ferdinand's £8m switch to Sunderland.

Sunderland have made a beat-the-deadline move to sign West Ham defender George McCartney, skysports.com understands.

McCartney has been chased by the Black Cats all summer, but the Northern Ireland rejected their overtures to pledge his future to Upton Park.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane is keen to bring in one more new signing before the closure of the transfer window as he looks to solve his problematic left-back quandary.

The 27-year-old arrived at Upton Park from the North East club in 2006 in a swap deal with Clive Clarke and he quickly established himself in East London.

McCartney recently signed a new deal at Upton Park, but Sunderland are hoping to persuade West Ham to do business with a big-money offer.

It is believed McCartney is currently on Wearside undergoing a medical as Sunderland look to tie up a deal before midnight.

Skysports.com understands that Ghana captain Stephen Appiah is in no hurry to commit his future to West Ham.

The Hammers have been strongly linked with the powerful midfielder and were reported to be ready to push through a deal before the deadline at midnight.

But Appiah, who is a free agent having parted company with Fenerbahce, is considering his options with a number of Europe's leading clubs believed to be interested.

Sources close to the player have told skysports.com that Appiah will not rush into putting pen to paper with any club due to his status as a free agent.

As he is no longer under contract with the Turkish giants, the former Juventus player will be able to sign for a new club after the closure of the transfer window.

The highly-rated Appiah is bound to attract interest in the Premier League, Spain, Italy and Germany with his combative talents much in demand.

Toffees in record swoop
Club record deal for Belgian starlet

Last updated: 2nd September 2008

Marouane Fellaini Belgium Under-21s

Fellaini: Record deal

Marouane Fellaini's agent has stated that the Belgian midfielder sealed a move to Everton before the transfer window closed on Monday evening.

Tottenham, Newcastle, West Ham and Everton were all reported to be locked in a battle to land the highly-rated Standard Liege star.

But it is now claimed that Everton won the race and sealed Fellaini's signature on a five-year contract in a club record deal.

It is reported in Belgium that Everton have agreed to pay €16million (£13m) - also Belgian transfer record - for the 20-year-old international.

Eveton looked to have worked right up to the deadline on Monday and look to have successfully brokered a deal with Standard's vice-president Luciano D'Onofrio.
Done deal

Fellaini's agent Christophe Henrotay confirmed the deal was done in time.

"It is all okay," he said.

"Marouane has signed for five-years and Standard gets €16 million."

Everton and Standard are both yet to confirm the deal but should David Moyes have sealed the move then it will be something of a coup as Fellaini is one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Europe.
