Sorry chaps but I think you both substantially underestimate both those players athleticism - both in terms of stamina and short distance (15-20 yards) speed.......Of the top of my head I can't think of a quick holding player, as it's not a role that requires pace, but being able to read the game.
if anything lack of pace makes you play there. Makele hardly a whippit! Mascherano the same.
Noble is a good passer, excellent finisher.......but one of the slowest midfield players I've seen at West Ham in 35 years......
I've seen enough of people like Palacios ghosting past him like he was invisible and treading treacle to believe that a defensively minded role, especially in an ordinary midfield 4, plays to his weaknesses....
His future must be in a Lampard/Berkovic type role. He has the intelligence and technique.
