Surely then you could argue that he wasn't being used effectively as he is less of a target man/hold the ball up type.Arch Dandy wrote:
Both.
With an in form Cole laying the ball off to him he would be much more effective ...
Or was it the standing there hands on hips looking for the pizza delivery boy attitude when opponents break away?

Re: Ashton top of Stoke's shopping list
Sorry Major, but I can't even get close to agreeing with you. Alan Shearer at his age had achieved far, far more than Ashton has. There's a very good reason for this, Alan Shearer was a far better player.Major wrote:You dont really know much about football do you ?
Dean Ashton is the best player we have by a long way. If he does even half of what he is capable of, one of the top 4 will have him at the end of the year. He is as good as Shearer was at his age IMO and has the talent to become one of the best in the league.
And while it's all well and good to say that "If he does even half of what he is capable of.......this, that and the other" the fact is he has to go out and actually do it, something he hasn't come close to doing in the last three years. Of course, he can't achieve anything whilst he's lying on the treatment table, but that doesn't mean he can assume greatness in the absence of producing anything at all.
Dean Ashton has got to go out and earn the praise and distinction he's been granted in the last three seasons. If he does that, fair play to the lad. I'll be the first to hold up my hands and say I was wrong. But this idea that he is a our best player on the basis of a literallya handful of decent performances in 2006 is in my opinion rather perverse. Until I actually see a player who measures up to sky high opinions of many on here, I can't join in the Ashton love-in and I certinaly wouldn't rule out seeking alternatives.
Re: Ashton top of Stoke's shopping list
the stoke fans seem to this it's basically a done deal.... would be pretty shocking .... could stoke even afford his transer fee??
Re: Ashton top of Stoke's shopping list
Sort of agree with the rest of it but Ashton is 26. At that age, Shearer had won the Premiership with Blackburn, was top scorer in the Premiership (34 goals) and was top scorer in a major international tournament, in which he reached the semi-finals with England.
And IMO given a full season he will be good enough to do all of that, i seriously can see him leading the England front line at the World Cup. And like i said he will move to a top 4 club and win the league
And we will get a ridiculous amount of womga for him...

And when are we likely to see this so far mythical full season of which you speak..given that it's taken him 3 full seasons to play 35 games?Major wrote:And IMO given a full season he will be good enough to do all of that, i seriously can see him leading the England front line at the World Cup. Re: Ashton top of Stoke's shopping list
Not really sure of the direct comparison with Shearer.
Different players in my opinion. Ashton more subtle and more skillfull.
Shearer more direct, quicker, stronger, better in the air and absolutely England's best finisher of the last 20 years.
If anything Ashton seems to be developing into more of a Teddy type player.

If he gets a full season behind him, gets into the endland set up and plays to his potential, he will be worth £20m+BLT319 wrote:

Yes, he is THAT good, only second to Rooney as England's best forward without any shadow of a doubt.

Re: Ashton top of Stoke's shopping list
Hmm, sort of has a ring of Hartson to Wimbledon about it. A small team flashing the cash. If he ends up there, he will end up like a Dean Windass, journyman striker who is forever moving between small clubs.
Re: Ashton top of Stoke's shopping list
Bad move. Would love to see a fit Ashton play. Yes, I know that he's been crock for most of his time here, but we know how well he can play, what a talent he can be when fit. My biggest issue with this is that it's just more money going out of the club. We'll see nothing from it.
I know he's a northerner and getting back home might just sway it, but I do hope he stays.
