When Capello first became England manager - when interviewed - he commented on just this point, saying that it was "the most important moment in a game".

He stated that the best two players "in transition" in the England squad were Upson, and Barry (both of whom have featured pretty regularly since) and it would seem that their inclusion - when fit - in all the squads he has named (and most teams I think) bears out the statement he made.

Re Jose, I did one of my coaching badges with some guys who work/worked at West Ham and Chelsea (not senior coaches, just community links types), and they told me that the first thing Jose did was to start a six aside where the ball never actually goes out of play - if it does, its just reintroduced immediatley.

He tells the players where he wants them, what he expects, and then makes sure that they do exactly that with this (almost multi ball) approach, and its a great drill for young players, who have a tendancy to watch everything but the player they are supposed to when the ball is "turned over" (just for Ouston).

When Clarke joined, one of the first things I noticed was that the players seemed to be incredibly well drilled, and I put this down to the work he had done with Jose. Sadly, with the loss of someone to drill the players during the game (imho Neill) that was completley lost this season.

Great point, I said at the start of the season that Lucas Neill was our greatest loss this season, for what he lacked in pace and ability he made up for in leadership, class and a healthy amount of arrogance. We had a very inexperienced team and he would have guided them and we would have finished a lot higher than we did.

we may not, but I bet the UK work permit issuing people do. In order to get a work permit you need to show that no home or EC national could fill the post.

You've missed out the important phrase "of equal quality". I'd challenge anyone at the work permit office to show me a British manager who has taken teams to the Champions League and FA Cup finals in the last 4 years and would agree to manage us right now!!!

Actually Chuck, we do that (did that) a whole lot. You place loads of balls outside the area in which you are playing. As soon as the ball goes out of play they grab the nearest one and continue. Makes players keep their focus (as much as my under 9 and 10's could do ) but when working with the older boys it got them either into, or out of trouble depending upon which way they reacted.

It's not rocket science. Speed of play (an area much associated with transition in it's own way) is another way in which we were found lacking. Barcelona excelled in this (as did other teams). Inter did a great job of stopping the other team from playing, but never quite got players forward in the same way. I would say defensively they got as many players back behind the ball as did/do Barca, they just don't get players forward in numbers the way that Barca do (they start with more players behind the ball). Ergo, difficult to score against, but subsequently don't score many. (But sometimes "not many" is enough).

I look forward to Chuck and myself throwing in our expertise....
