Everthing we hold dear as West Ham fans, the players, the way we play football, the 'Academy' can be traced back to this one person.

God bless, Ron.

RIP Ron Greenwood.

Probably did more than anyone to make West Ham the club they are. He was a forward thinking man in all ways of life. He was not afraid to try new ways of football and was instrumental in taking a "continental" style of footbal to England. He took West Ham from being an average and sometimes noticeable club to a national and internationally recognised club. Not only was he a great football man, he was also a gentleman. He always had time for supporters and never thought he was better than "the man in the street".

If there is a heaven, the great players that are up there now have another great manager.

I hope I speak for all Tottenham fans when I say RIP to a great man and fantastic manager. You showed tremendous respect for Bill Nicholson when he died.

Just saw it on sky sports news, very sad day, I hope the club do something to celebrate his life on Monday.
In my eyes, he was the one that put this club in the public eye.

If only we had a few more like him.

R I P Ron.

and with him goes another piece of the Old West Ham that those of us over 35 probably took for granted at the time, and have pined for ever since.

God bless you Ron

I wonder if West Ham should call the new East Stand the Greenwood stand?

Manager who brought us a European trophy.

Manager who coached Moore, Hurst & Peters. His training techniques were behind at least 2 of our goals inthe 66 World Cup Final thanks to the rapport between Moore and Hurst to say nothing of his gift to the nation in cultivating these talents. Do not underestimate Ron's role in this. To begin with Moore was a very average centre-back and Husrt a struggling midfielder, others first then Ron got them on the way to the top of the world.

Sir Geoff says ""It would not be overstating the case to say that Ron was the single most influential figure in my career. He opened the door to the world of modern football and I consider it a privilege to play for him."

On those counts alone he stands as an immense figure in WHU and England's history. Yet there was so much more to him which I will leave others to elaborate on.

He was West Ham manager when I was born and when I began to realise into which football club family I had had the privilege to have been born into.

84 is a good knock but I am still deeply saddened to learn of his passing away and forever grateful to his contribution to WHU. Without him, who knows where our club would have drifted to.

On this site we have often debated what is the "West ham way". Whatever it is, this man invented it.

Despite not living in his time I feel like I have lost someone I knew, or at least lost someone who was part of something very important in my life

At least it was nice that he passed away when things are so posative at the club, with a bright future and everyone feeling behind the team.

RIP Ron

Thats a fine idea, however it will probably be "the Jiffy" stand or something.

Dont often get involved in all these threads but this one has really gutted me. The man produced arguably our finest ever team, just a shame that some other teams were also very strong at the time or we would have walked the league (so i am told). My Grandad loved the man and knew him reasonably well from the training ground.

he always reffered to Ron as "Gent" seems to sum him up.
