News on Owen (from Guardian)

Steve McClaren, the England coach, faced yet more injury concern yesterday when Michael Owen was sent for a scan on a groin problem by his club Newcastle United and his strike partner, Wigan's Emile Heskey, was declared "touch and go" to be fit for the next Euro 2008 qualifier.
Owen was replaced after 56 minutes of Newcastle's 1-0 defeat at Derby County on Monday night following an ineffectual performance, prompting fears the 27-year-old had picked up another niggling setback on his return from the knee injury he suffered at the World Cup in Germany last year.

However, Newcastle's manager, Sam Allardyce, was adamant yesterday that Owen does not require an operation, a confidence shared by the player, even though neither will discover the results of the scan until this morning.
Owen has played just 19 games for Newcastle since a £17m move from Real Madrid in 2005, and only returned from a thigh strain this month. However, he has scored five goals in five games for club and country while playing with this latest injury and is not troubled by it on a daily basis.

Nevertheless there are concerns the injury has deteriorated, and Allardyce and McClaren will anxiously await the scan results. If Owen needs surgery he is likely to be missing for at least three weeks, which would put his involvement in England's next round of qualifiers in jeopardy. England host Estonia on October 13 before travelling to Russia four days later.

Maybe a whole match is too much for him at the moment?

Solano may be available - apparently Curbs met him for the first time on Saturday

Curbs also confirmed that Neill flight was 25 hours before last saturdays game. Almost makes you wish we had decent right back cover - but our cover comes from Peru and USA!!!

More Owen News. Same HP.

Michael Owen seems destined to have yet more surgery after reliable sources last night insisted that the England striker requires a hernia operation which will sideline him for up to six weeks.
Although Newcastle United's manager, Sam Allardyce, said yesterday that Owen was "absolutely fine", it appears that the groin problem which forced his withdrawal during Monday's 1-0 defeat at Derby County is more serious than initially thought.

In the short term he can go on playing, and he could conceivably continue until December, but he needs to perform protracted, carefully planned warm-up exercises before taking the field and the danger of his groin trouble becoming aggravated and impeding his game increases the longer he remains on the pitch.

He is understood to be keen to delay surgery but, with his Nigerian attacking partner Obafemi Martins due to depart for the African Cup of Nations in the new year, Newcastle's interests would be best served by an operation in the next month. Indeed it is possible that the striker, who has scored five times in his past five games for Newcastle and England, will miss the crucial European Championship qualifiers at home to Estonia and away to Russia in the middle of next month.
The matter will need to be discussed between Owen, Allardyce, the striker's medical advisers and Steve McClaren, the England head coach, but from Newcastle's viewpoint the next international break might offer a suitable window for surgery. It is thought that Owen will be sent to Munich where the operation would be performed by Ulrike Muschaweck, a surgeon who has dealt with hernias suffered by Newcastle players such as Alan Shearer and Steve Harper.

This latest misfortune comes after Owen spent much of the close season recovering from a thigh strain. Before that he missed most of last season after rupturing a cruciate ligament during the 2006 World Cup, where he was newly fit in the wake of six months spent nursing a broken metatarsal.

Small wonder that only last week Allardyce refused to get carried away enthusing about Owen's return to scoring form and instead peppered his tributes to the striker with the repeated proviso, "if we can keep Michael free from groin and hamstring troubles".

Although the Newcastle manager's worst fears about his £17m striker's suspect fitness seem to have been confirmed, at least the fact that Owen is likely soon to be absent from the Premier League scoring charts for six weeks or so may deter leading clubs from attempting to lure him away from Tyneside during the January transfer window.

Will be interesting to see what Curbs plays up there to be honest.

The easy option would be to stick with what we have got, but maybe a 4-5-1 is best to accomodate the way they play.

Tough place to get a result of any discription, so bring in the experience of Parker and Ljungberg to replace Bowyer and Nobel imo

Just goes to show what a good squad we are developing, No Ferdinand on the bench & when Faubert, Dyer, Bellemy all get back to fitness great competion for places, and this is exactly what will deliver us a good solid mid table(+) season competiton for places.

You shouldnt expect a win though. A draw at a place like Newcastle would be a very solid result.
