Squad Numbers?Moderators: Lost Hammer, bonehead, chalks, goes2eleven, Alf Garnett's (Ex) Missus, bristolhammerfc, Wheels, sicknote, Romford, Rio, Gnome, Northern Paulo Squad Numbers?I know this is a bit early with potentially plenty more in's and out's over the next month or so.
I wonder which youngsters might get a 'promotion' if you like, from numbers in the late 20's/30's into the 1-22 range. Spence? Nouble? Will they give O'Neil a more 'sensible' number, or will he stick with 32? What numbers will newcomers Nolan and Faye get?
Re: Squad Numbers? Here are West Ham United's squad numbers for every season the club participated in the Premier League....
http://www.myfootballfacts.com/West_Ham_United_Squad_Numbers.html ...unfortunately, that's not going to be much help for season 2011-12. But with a bit of luck, I'll add a new row for 2012-13.
Re: Squad Numbers?Hard to say until we know who's leaving. If Gabbidon goes, I'd assume Nolan will take 4 (he wore that at Newcastle). We also have potentially available numbers 3, 7, 8 and 11 in the "normal" range too.
Re: Squad Numbers?
Number 32 IS a sensible number for us now! Infact, take it off GON... Its the shirt of heroes!
Re: Squad Numbers?
You saw who wore it in the 07/08 season right?
Re: Squad Numbers?I would like us to return to the days of properly numbered shirts, 1-11.
Lets see the first team by dint of having one of those numbers , and lets see anyone with 12 - 25 take it off them by pushing for a place . Call me old fashioned if you want .
Re: Squad Numbers?
Granted... Misguided... Hench why changed after 1 year I should imagine!
Re: Squad Numbers?
Totally agree, definitely a fan of the right positions having the 'right' numbers too. Slightly OCD though eh?
Re: Squad Numbers? We will not have our first team wearing 1 - 11 by virtue of 6 being retired... to be pedantic.
Re: Squad Numbers?
This raises another discussion point. Who actually likes this decision? I don't like it. I think it should be a case that players want to fight for the right to earn the No6 shirt. There are plenty of other ways to commemorate Bobby Moore.
Re: Squad Numbers?
would you have been happy if Upson had worn the number 6?
Re: Squad Numbers?
I find that boring, like the FA making the England team do the same. I'd rather the player picked any number he wanted from 1 to 99, good for morale.
Re: Squad Numbers?
And end up like all those european idiots with players with shirts up in the 80's and 90's?! No thanks - 1 - 30 odd for your possible squad with a few of the youngers given higher numbers when there are none left.
Re: Squad Numbers?
He did wear it before the retirement, did he not? Maybe being forced out to 15 upset him?
Re: Squad Numbers?
Agree with this. The one guy who gets my goat is Bendtner, who went from the relatively stupid #26 to the utterly ridiculous #52.
Re: Squad Numbers?
Well its mainly Serie A so I dont know about 'European idiots', seems like a bit of a blanket statement. Anyway, i enjoy watching Robinho in 70, Inler in 88, Muslera in 86 etc. Better than numbers like 15, 27 etc.
Re: Squad Numbers?
Maybe it was a bit blanket, fair enough. I still have to disagree with you though. In my mind I see those 'other' numbers as having a sensible position. Most of this will be based on players who have used it I guess. For example, as much as he's a ****, Upson has pretty much set in my mind that 15 should be a CB. I see 18 as a ST, probably Defoe done that one. 23 I used to see as a defender (Carragher) but now a winger after Beckham. Whilst I'm not saying how I imagine my squad numbers fitting should be what everyone adears to, I definitely think it makes more sense than someone wearing 77 because the 7 is already in use and they think of themselves as a silky smooth pretty boy winger. In that example, take 17 - like Nani and Man United!

The reason Bendtner has number 52 is because he earns £52,000 a week. What a prick.
Re: Squad Numbers? He said he took 52 cause it his fave number. Where on earth did ou hear is cause he earns 52k a week.
Re: Squad Numbers?A number is a number. Les Ferdinand took 99 when Shearer was signed at Newcastle.
I preferred the old 1-11 but it isn't going to come back pure and simply due to shirt sales and other crap club sells. Retiring the number 6 shirt was a tacky ***** idea. Are we gonna retire 10 when Sir Trevor croaks it or 4 for Bonzo ?
