FAC3: Sheffield Wednesday 1 West Ham Utd 0 (08/01/12)

Post by sutts07 »

Sunday 8th Jan 2012
3pm Kick Off
3,500 allocation given, (tickets still available)

I would expect the back four of Faubert, Reid, Tomkins and McCartney to stay unchanged as it is always good to get a settled back four. As for the rest of the side though... who knows!

Lots of mixed views as to how serious/bothered we should be about this game so it will be interesting to see how Big Sam approaches it. Could go with the option of resting players and give a few a chance to put their hat in the ring...

O'Neil, Diop and Lansbury...
Sears, Carew and Nouble...

Cole is knackkered, give Noble a rest, give Potts another chance out, likewise Nouble and Hall who deserve a run. I would love to rest Tomkins too, but can't see how.

Boffin
Faubert Tomkins Reid Potts
Nolan Lansbury Diop Piq
Hall Nouble

(Bring on Baldock and O'Neil for a half - Carew and Montenegro also on the bench)

Bring back some injured players, give some youth a chance.

Stech
Spence Tomkins Reid Potts
O'Neil Nolan Collison Montano
Nouble Baldock

Subs: Green Faye Noble Hall Cole

Keeping a solid base, but giving some younger players a chance to put a claim in for a starting place. As well as giving Nouble a chance to continue his good form. Baldock, O'Neil and Reid getting some minutes to get back from injury.

I think we will see quite a few changes for this one. For staters, I don't think he will put Robert Green in goal. Think he may even decide to rest Tomkins too, as he has had a lot of games inside just a few days and can't risk over exposure and him being sidelined through injury. BFS will give thought to this in his team selections. Think he will go O'Brien, but he might bring in Demel to give him a game, with young Danny Potts on the left side of defence and probably Faye and Winston Reid at the heart. In midfield, probably, Noble, Diop and Collison who needs a run of games in order to recpature some match sharpness and although none of us wants to see Piq anywhere near the first team again, I can see him picking him once again for this cup game.

So, the team I think BFS will put out is:

Stech, O'Brien, Faye, Reid, Potts, Faubert, Noble, Diop, Collison, Piq, Nouble

Bench: Boffin, Montenegro, Demel, Cole, Baldock

Hopefully give Faye, Taylor and Baldock a run out to get the fitness levels back up.

I hope we give the reserves and the kids a chance. We've seen how stretched the squad is with injuries and suspensions in recent weeks so we shouldn't be risking our best players for this one.

I'd like to see Rob Hall and Frank Nouble play upfront, perhaps with Olly Lee in midfield and Danny Potts at full back again. Give the main lads a break is key IMO.

Will be interesting to see how SA approaches this match and the FA Cup in general. The League Cup imo was viewed by him as nothing more than a training session/reserve match and not taken seriously. Shame as people paid to attend. He has to take this seriously. No league match for twelve days. Also some teams that go on a good FA Cup run, invariably tend to go on a good run
in the league as well. Reading for example turned their season around last year by going on a good run.

...........................Green................................
JOB........Tomkins.........Reid........Macartney
.....Lansbury......Noble.........Collison............
..........................Nolan..................................
..............Nouble...........Baldrick....................

Bench: Boffin, Diop (Faye), Potts, Montano, Hall, Faubert, Cole.

Should be a good opportunity to get the goals flying in again.

Pick as strong a team as possible, but...

Players who need resting should be rested - ie if Reid is still a bit off the pace, no point in risking him, but if he needs match time, it's an ideal game to play him.
I can understand playing players in league games, especially when down to the bare bones, perhaps before they are really ready, if it will give us a better chance of the points. No point in risking anything for this one

And on the other hand, players who might need games should be given a go if possible. Would seem like a good game for the likes of O'Neill to play in, for fitness reasons, and the likes of Nouble, to show the manager a bit more of what he's about

I guess I'd go something like:-

-------Green
JOB - Reid - Linda - Potts
Faubert - Diop - Collison - O'Neill
------Nouble - Baldock

Subs - Stech, Tomka, Nolan, Noble, Cole

It's all about our CD, if Reid is fit to play, and if Faye is ready. If both are, I'd be inclined to leave Potts out altogether, with Linda at LB, and either Faye or Tomka in the middle

Looking at Allardyce's comments after Coventry it would suggest Carew might get some game time this weekend:
Again, John Carew didn't play today. Why?

He hasn't played well enough when he's had the chance. Freddie Piquionne didn't even get on the bench. He's had the chance but he hasn't played well enough. Frank Nouble's come back from Gillingham, played really well at Derby and scored so he gets on the bench.

Have you spoken with John about this before?

If I have, it's got nothing to do with you...

but is he involved in your future plans here?

Yeah, I mean he could get a game at Sheffield Wednesday next week and get some vital match practise.

HS,
FA Cup i believe means 7 subs allowed. Could be wrong though.

Keep the laughter to a minimum as the players at the bottom are subs!
Not part of some elaborate 4-1-2-3-7 formation that would no doubt get us thrown out of the competition!
I am assuming you can have 7 subs for this BTW...?

As I said at the top of the thread I would expect the back four of Faubert, Reid, Tomkins and McCartney to stay unchanged as it is always good to get a settled back four playing back to back games.

I would also expect Nolan to start as it seems to be an unwritten rule for Big Sam to start him and the lack of leadership at Derby will have cemented this rule.

Lansbury needs games so I would start him, and I expect to see Sears or O'Neil (or Hall although I have to admit I have never seen him play) given a chance along with Nouble and Carew.

Not quite a 2nd string and plenty on the bench to see us through if needed :raver:

Any idea if game will be televised?

I don't know, I wouldn't rest too many players. After the game there's almost a week until the next league game which is plenty. We f*cked up the Carling Cup, why wouldn't we give it a go at FA Cup? Wembley is calling...

It's a long way to go to see a Reserve team, so lucky that some players are still recovering from injury and will jump at the chance of gaining match fitness. Really looking forward to this trip, the doris is driving us up early Saturday with a stop at Chatsworth House along the way. Let's just hope we get a win and a nice quick journey home.

When's the draw for the fourth round? Before or after our game?

Defintley Sears last chance, start Nouble, this could be the most boring game ver Big Sam vs Megson.

I think after Monday's fixture between Arsenal and Leeds (KO 19.45)

Seems to be what people think
Good news for us.
I'd be even more inclined to give some of those who need the games a start, with an experienced bench containing a variety of options for changes if those less established players are struggling

A good game for O'Neill, Baldock, Reid, Nouble, (Potts even) to get minutes under their belts, knowing we have plenty on the bench
