Hammers, Lions told to keep cool
HANDS UP ... a Hammers fan at 2009 Carling Cup tie

WEST HAM and Millwall have been told to cool celebrations tomorrow — or risk a repeat of their last clash at Upton Park.

In the Carling Cup three years ago, serious crowd trouble marred the Hammers' extra-time win.

There were running battles outside and inside the ground, with one man stabbed near the stadium.

Now Chief Superintendent Sean Vickers has warned: "We appreciate a healthy rivalry between the clubs but anything that deviates from this will be dealt with quickly and robustly.

"There will be no excuses. If you are intent on trouble, you will be targeted by our officers and dealt with appropriately."

Vickers, one of London's top cops, has been working with his team of officers for two months to make sure the London derby goes off without any trouble.

He will speak to match ref Steve Jones, remind him of the responsibilities players have and demand his message be passed on to both dressing rooms.

Vickers added: "I don't personally speak to the players but I will talk to the referee about the club rivalries and the players are told to manage their goal celebrations, so they do not cause any risk to anyone in the crowd.

"The match is a 12.30pm kick-off and the agreed time for the pubs to open around the ground is 4pm. There is a direct correlation between alcohol and violence and we want to reduce any risk.

"Since 2009, West Ham has seen very, very little disorder. It has the lowest arrest rates of any London club and the lowest ejection rates as well.

"It has been a very successful partnership between police and the football club in the last two or three years."

In addition to the late pub openings, anyone drinking in the streets will be arrested, mounted police will back up uniformed officers and plain-clothes detectives will mingle with the crowd.

Vickers said: "Local people have been reassured we will provide a safe environment for them."

Nicky: I’m sorry City

NICKY MAYNARD has said sorry to Bristol City fans for the way he quit the Ashton Gate club.

The striker, 25, joined West Ham on deadline day for a cut-price £2million and admitted he had become unpopular among some City supporters.

He was out of contract in the summer and Bristol City faced the prospect of losing him for nothing.

But Maynard said: "I always had a good relationship with the fans and I regret how things ended."

Maynard was even booed when he came on as a late substitute in his last match at Reading.

He added: "That was a blow but the chance to join a massive club like West Ham was too good to turn down."

West Ham and Millwall players warned about goal celebrations ahead of derby

West Ham and Millwall players will be warned to rein in their goal celebrations as part of a police operation aimed at ensuring Saturday's Championship derby passes off without incident.

Police have been working with both clubs for months to try and avoid a repeat of the disgraceful scenes which marred the Carling Cup tie at Upton Park in August 2009.

Chief Superintendent Sean Vickers said: ‘I will talk to the referee (Mike Jones) about the club rivalries and the players are told to manage their goal celebrations so that they do not cause any risk to anyone in the crowd. It’s about having personal responsibility.’

Can Morrison Turn His Life And Career Around At West Ham?

Losing talented players is never an easy thing for football clubs to do with. Over the years of course Manchester United and all the top clubs in Europe have been used to bringing in talented youngsters who seemingly have bright futures in the game.

However they very rarely let such talent go which they have nurtured and have hoped to mould into a superstar of tomorrow. For reasons which have been well documented United have let the enigmatic enigma who is Ravel Morrison go.

Whether or not Morrison will emerge from his dark clouds that hanged over him which he had in Manchester and mature as a person and as a footballer at West Ham, only time can tell, but it may not sound a bad move for him.

Sam Allardyce has worked wonders with players who have had bad reputations as being trouble-makers. You may not like him, but he has to be respected. Here is a man who got the best out of that wonderful chap named El-Hadji Diouf twice at both Bolton and at Blackburn

Allardyce has a knack of working with tainted players and you can bet that Sir Alex Ferguson would not have sold one of his good friends a damaged egg, so to speak in Morrison if he didn’t think it was in his friend's best interests.

Morrison has certainly created a bad perception and the move to London and the Championship will give him a chance to lie low and get back to playing football, which right now given all the negative press he's been getting will be the best thing for him.

Whether or not he will fall back into the same dark circles again or not, is something only time will be able to tell us. It’s now up to him to prove Sir Alex wrong, becoming the player and person that everyone at Old Trafford wanted him to be. If he does that, it will be some story to say the least.

Tony Carr has seen many young hopefuls pass through in his 39 years on the coaching staff at the academy of football. On 15 February he will oversee West Ham United's under-18 side in a fifth-round FA Youth Cup tie against Chelsea. The team are not yet on a level with the 1999 class, headed by Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, who won the competition; or the Frank Lampard-Rio Ferdinand crop who lost the 1996 final to Liverpool. But they have a chance, according to Carr.

An impressive 84 scouts attended the previous round to see a side featuring Daniel Potts, son of the Hammers legend Steve, and Elliot Lee, offspring of the former Newcastle United midfielder Rob, take apart Brighton & Hove Albion 4-1.

Already the 17-year-old Potts, a left-back like his father, and the forward Robert Hall, 18, have made it into Sam Allardyce's first team. Potts has started three of his four appearances, while Hall has been a replacement on four occasions.

When was the last time Carr's coaching alchemy transformed two youth-teamers into West Ham senior XI personnel in the same season? "That would be in the Cole and Carrick days, and the Ferdinand and Lampard days," says Carr, the club's youth director, who is careful to avoid trite comparisons with those two vintage intakes.

"We were in the Premier League then and now we're in the Championship. With respect, it's a little bit easier to break into the first team as a Championship side.

"No one gets carried away at this stage. It's when they've played 50 games that we think that we've done the job."

Here we see a message to Potts, Hall and their fellow pretenders that they are still a million miles from making it. "Robert Hall and Daniel Potts have done very well and we feel there are a couple of others who in a year or so could break into the first team. We've got two other England players in the squad with Matthias Fanimo and Blair Turgott. We've also got Leo Chambers, who is the under-17 captain, playing at the back, and Kenzer Lee, a centre-back, so we feel there's potential.

"Rob Lee West Ham youth academy One youngster is floored in training, while the opposition celebrate. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian 's son, Elliot, is only a first-year and he's our leading goalscorer – we hope in the next year to 18 months he'll be another knocking on the door. The difficult thing about youth football is that sometimes the potential doesn't realise itself."

Carr offers a further illustration of the fragility of the professional game. From that all-conquering 1999 side, less than half achieved longevity: "Cole, Carrick, Richard Garcia now at Hull, Stephen Bywater [Sheffield Wednesday], and Adam Newton, who played for West Ham, and other clubs."

Hall had his own stark reminder of the tough career path when he came on as a substitute at Ipswich Town in the Championship on Tuesday evening during West Ham's 5-1 defeat.

Despite the realism, Carr will concede the achievement. "It doesn't happen every year to have two players getting into the first team. It's something you hope for but it doesn't always happen. We feel that's a very good achievement."

Carr believes that, in Allardyce, West Ham have a manager who can see the line from youth to senior player and who understands the value of a club being holistic in approach. On most Fridays Allardyce has the youth team line up against the senior players in training. "We go down there and the manager likes to re-enact the formation of the opposition the next day, do some match preparation. We try to mimic the opposition," Carr says.

This was how Allardyce spotted Potts and Hall. "He has a close look at the players at that time and gives his opinion," Carr adds. "It's massive that the manager shows that interest. It shows the players there is a pathway, that we're not a team in isolation, we're a football club and everybody's important, and with Potts and Hall you can still be a youth-team player and make your way into the first team."

Against Chelsea Carr's latest group of highly talented cadets will be led by the captain Potts, who overcame illness as a child and who signed a first professional contract of two and a half years in December. "At 12 he was diagnosed with leukaemia and he spent two years out of the game," Carr says. "He's done remarkably well to carve a living out of pro football."

Carr exp West Ham youth academy The life of a young footballer isn't always glamorous. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian ects another sizeable turnout of scouts for the Youth Cup tie at Staines. "At West Ham-Chelsea there will be an equal number because it sounds a very attractive tie – we've got players who can hurt them and they've got players who can hurt us.

"We have a philosophy of the way we want to play, and how we try to bring up players off the field. We like an expansive game, and try to encourage players to express themselves. We're not team-builders, we're trying to develop players – that's the key element of what we do. As they grow older, you start to teach them about learning to win.

"The side that won the Youth Cup [in 1999] was outstanding. If this team get anywhere near emulating them they'd have done very well. That's not to say they're not as good. For this side the challenge is there, isn't it?"

Too true Pinky, I know it's Millwall but with all the measures put in place for this game I get the feeling it could just be a dull day/game.

Hopefully tomorrow will be different to how I think it might be...hopefully.

I also believe our 'lowest ejection rate' is due to our pretty decent/understanding stewards that we have more than anything as they are far from OTT like some clubs.

The month of February is to transfer rumours what new year's resolutions are to the rest of us. A period of big ideas that starts with a resolve to make things dramatically better at the first available opportunity, followed by the realisation of how much work that actually entails, which leads to whatever crazy chemes were bouncing around quickly descending into some half-baked idea involving a short-term loan deal for Yakubu, a plan to run a 10k at some unspecified point later in the year in preparation for next year's marathon, and a decision that three of your five-a-day is probably good enough to attain a level of health you would be content with.

But things are different down Stamford Bridge way. They have bigger plans afoot there after José Mourinho only went and said he would like to return to Chelsea as manager. Yep. That's right. You saw it regurgitated here first. But what about his tempestuous relationship with Roman Abramovich you may be wondering? Well fear not because one of his "closest confidantes" has told The Sun: "He would say 'Roman, you are the owner and I am the boss here. Let's work together and the power is in our hands'. For José that would be the perfect partnership." This seems odd because that was the exact same partnership the last time out when Mourinho, as boss, learned that the power was very much in the hands of the owner, Roman Abramovitch.

Of course there is the other (small) problem that Chelsea already have a manager in André Villas-Boas, someone who was bandied about as "the new special one" last summer on account of having learned his trade under the original "special one", Mourinho, so bringing back the old "special one" doesn't actually sound that enticing unless of course the 'new special' one isn't all that special and it was just made it up for a cheap soundbite, but that doesn't sound like some thing the media would do.

And Mourinho may not be the only Madridista pitching up in west London in the summer. Real Madrid hope to offload Gonzalo Higuaín to Chelsea which will free up room for an audacious move for Higuaín's Argentina team-mate and Manchester restaurant lover Sergio Agüero. Manchester City may yet have something top say about that particular deal, but might be distracted by trying to tie up a move for everyone's favourite Belgian (apart from Poirot, Tintin and Jean-Claude Van Damme) Eden Hazard, with manager Roberto Mancini calling the 21-year-old an "enormous talent." Mancini will have to bash heads will Chelsea to get his hands on Hazard. The Blues have gone to watch him play for Lille 20 times and figure this commitment will be enough to swing the deal in their favour. Or land them with a stalking charge. Either, or.

Elsewhere Juventus are planning a shock move for Luiz Suarez. The Old Lady want the Liverpool striker to replace their Old Man, Alessandro Del Piero, who will leave the club in the summer. Liverpool want to keep their South American quota up and are eyeing a move for Udinese's Chile midfielder Mauricio Isla. They reckon £12m in hard cash will persuade the Italians to sell.

Manchester United are smitten with Basel 20-year-old pop sensation Xherdan Shaqiri. Sir Alex Ferguson has kitted his bedroom, lunch box and school bag with pictures of Shaqiri, but may still face competition for his signature from Zenit St Petersburg.

North London must be a lovely place as Arsenal's favourite substitute Andrey Arshavin will turn down a move to Anzhi Makhachkala because he wants to stay at the Emirates, while a few miles away Heurelho Gomes has decided he would rather sit on the bench at Tottenham than move to CSKA Moscow.

Oh, and Carlos Tevez is wanted by Anzhi Makhachkala who have three more weeks of their transfer window remaining, because Russia don't play by the rules. But we all know that this particular saga has about as much chance of ending soon as any of the rest of us have of seeing through any resolutions, other than the short-term loan deal for the Yak, obviously.
