club call

Bouba Diop may figure for Hammers

Papa Bouba Diop could return to the West Ham starting line-up for the visit of Birmingham.

The Senegalese midfielder has been out for three months with a thigh tear, but returned as a late substitute in Friday's 4-0 win at Barnsley.
Right-back Joey O'Brien remains an injury doubt after missing out at Oakwell so fit-again Guy Demel should keep his place.
The Hammers suffered no new injuries so the bulk of the team should be unchanged, although Carlton Cole could be recalled to the starting line-up after he was rested against the Tykes.
Sam Allardyce's side have not won at home in six attempts and are now four points behind both leaders Southampton and second-placed Reading.

The Red Tops naturally picked up on the clever little grenade lobbed by Di Canio by saying:
"Hammers fans want Di Canio to replace Sam Allardyce at Upton Park and the Italian said: “I don’t know if Swindon still want me.”

Here we go then: the first direct barbs from the mercurial Italian to whip up a terrace reaction to engineer a return to West Ham. And there will be a small, loud element crying out for it to happen, no doubt paired with Julian Dicks on the “dream ticket”.

If ever West Ham needed stability it is now as we approach the run-in with automatic promotion still, albeit tenuously within our grasp. For all you Di Canioistas out there. How many ex-favourite players have returned to be successful managers at their former clubs? Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool? Kevin Keegan at Newcastle? Bryan Robson anywhere?

IF we do get there, who would you rather see in charge: a rookie manager once capable of truly fabulous displays as a player, yet with the finger permanently poised on the self-destruct button? Or a football hard nut who has overseen West Ham to just two league defeats this year, an unbeaten run which went 10 or 11 games and a club record 12 away wins this season, still rising?

In-form Birmingham won’t lay down like Barnsley on Friday. It will be our toughest call of the season and The Boleyn must rock with support for 90 minutes to help get us over the line. For the rest of the season, starting tomorrow, leave PDC up there in dreamland and get behind the manager and team that’s playing in the real world! :raver:

Spot on Freddie Sears is so quick off the mark

FREDDIE Sears was quick off the mark to take Colchester United’s 81st-minute penalty, to secure a 1-1 home draw against Hartlepool United on Good Friday.

Sears would normally have been well down the pecking order of spot-kick contenders, but he took full advantage of the absence of normal pretenders Steven Gillespie, Anthony Wordsworth and Ian Henderson.

All three had been substituted, so Sears didn’t need a second invitation.

“In a way I was lucky that all those lads were off the pitch,” admitted Sears.

“There were doubts about who was going to take the penalty, but I just wanted to take it. As a striker you want to score goals and be responsible for it.

“I had a chat with Rosy (Michael Rose and he said – ‘do you want it?’ – and I said ‘yes,’ especially as no one else went for the ball.

“Everyone was looking around, so I grabbed the ball and thankfully stuck it in.

“I’ve not taken many penalties. I’ve missed one (for Crystal Palace, against Scunthorpe), and scored one today, but I used to take them all the time for the Reserves and youth team at West Ham.

“I’m confident to step up and hit the target, and it felt good to score again,” added Sears.

It was only the fourth goal of Sears’ professional career, following three strikes (two in the league) for his parent club West Ham.

And his opportunities have been limited, since his loan switch to the U’s in mid-February. Good Friday was only his fourth start.

“I’ve been biding my time a bit, trying to break into the team, and I think I’ve done a good job today,” explained Sears.

“I’ve come in, looked lively, and played off Steven (Gillespie) in the first half and then Kayode (Odejayi) in the second half. I thought it went well.

“But we are disappointed with the result, because towards the end I thought we edged it,” added Sears.

The U’s travel to Bury for a 3pm kick-off tomorrow. The Shakers have only won one of their last 15 games and are in danger of dropping into the relegation zone during the closing weeks of the season.
