Big Sam goes for it

The Hammers hold a 2-0 lead against Cardiff in their play-off semi-final.

And Big Sam wants his lads to go for the jugular and make sure the Bluebirds do not find a way back in today’s second leg.

The Boleyn boss said: “We’re only halfway there. We have got to be focused on job, try to win and not sit back and protect the lead.

“We have to go out and deliver a performance like we did against Brighton and Hull at home — if we do we can deliver another win.”

Allardyce’s side secured their win in Wales thanks to a Jack Collison double.

Collison said: “Everyone is in good form. We have lost once in 19 games and that is down to teamwork.

“We were superb in the first leg and if play like that like again we will be hard to beat.”

We deserve to go up! Hammers No 2 eyes Wembley ahead of crunch Cardiff return

West Ham assistant manager Neil McDonald loves the play-offs but hopes the system does not punish his side after what he feels has been an 'impressive' season.

The Hammers missed out on automatic promotion to Southampton on the final day of the season but have responded superbly, winning the first leg of their semi-final 2-0 at Cardiff on Thursday.

West Ham welcome the Welsh outfit to Upton Park on Monday as they bid to secure a place at the Wembley finale at the expense of a side that finished 13 points behind them in the standings.

'I think the play-offs have been one of the best things that has been introduced to football along with three points,' assistant manager McDonald said.

'It gives everybody a chance, it keeps the whole season going and, yes, it is slightly disappointing to finish third and so many points above fourth, [fifth and sixth] but we knew what was happening.

'We knew what the situation was and we've tried to put that to the back of our mind now.

'Everybody is equal, the whole four teams in the play-offs are in good form and the Blackpool v Birmingham game is on a knife edge.

'I suppose so is ours but we have a good advantage going into the second leg 2-0 up and we have to try and take advantage of that.

'I think it has been an impressive season even though we have not got automatic promotion.

'I suppose the fans are looking more so to the Wembley final but we're so concentrated on the one game on Monday against Cardiff.

'If we can get through that then we can start planning to try and enjoy the experience at Wembley.'

Jack Collison's brace in the first leg makes West Ham strong favourites to make the final against Blackpool or Birmingham.

McDonald, though, insists the Hammers are not taking Monday's fixture lightly and believes the home support will spur them forward.

'I think two goals away from home is fantastic and our home form over the last two goals puts us in a good mood,' he said.

'I think the support we had the other night from the travelling fans was absolutely fantastic.

'I that will bounce onto the home game and the whole place will be trying to take the roof off the stadium.

'It will make it an intimidating place to come to, that's for sure.

'There will be a fantastic atmosphere but it still won't be an easy game to get through.

'Planning and preparation is the key and we've done it in one game and hopefully we can do it in the second.'

MALKY MACKAY’S GOT HIS UPTON SPARK

CARDIFF boss Malky Mackay insists his squad have got the self-belief to overcome a 2-0 deficit at West Ham today.

The Hammers are odds-on favourites to book their place in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley on May 19.

But Mackay – a play-off winner as a player with West Ham and Watford – claims his side can pull off a shock.

“Most people may now expect West Ham to make it through to the final – that could be a natural reaction I suppose,” he said.

“But myself and the team don’t subscribe to that. We go into Monday afternoon trying to win the game.

“We have 90 minutes to score twice and, beyond that, to win the game. Right now we have a fighter’s chance.”

Mackay added: “We need to score, not necessarily early on, but we need to score first.

“If we do that then we get a toe-hold back in the game again.

“We need to make sure we are disciplined going into the game. We can’t have a tendency to go gung-ho from the first minute.

“People might think that and want to go for it from the off, but we need to make sure that we’re in the game.

“We know it’s a stiff test, we understand that, but it’s still only half-time.

“We’ve got to go there and ease our way into the game, looking to nick the first goal, which could prove important.

“It’ll once again be down to who adapts best to the game and who takes their chances. On Thursday they did and we didn’t.”

Mackay knows all about the Upton Park atmosphere from his time there as a player and West Ham assistant manager Neil McDonald thinks that will play a big part.

Jack Collison’s first-leg brace looks to have booked a showdown with Blackpool or Birmingham.

And McDonald said: “I think two goals away from home is fantastic and our home form over the last two games puts us in a good mood.

“I think the support we had the other night from the travelling fans was absolutely fantastic.

“I think that will bounce onto the home game and the whole place will be trying to take the roof off the stadium.

“It will make it an intimidating place to come to, that’s for sure.”

New Keeper?

If the word on the street is right, West Ham United could be saying goodbye to Robert Green.

The goalkeeper, who is out of contract shortly and who hasn`t put pen to paper on a new deal, is being linked with a move to White Hart Lane.

Reacting to that possible defection of Green, the word on the street goes on to infer that Big Sam will be looking to bring a former charge of his, Jussi Jaaskelainen to Upton Park

The Finnish keeper has recently lost his first team spot to Adam Bogdan and could, quite possibly, be lured to the East End by the prospect of first team football.

Match Preview: West Ham Utd FC vs Cardiff City - Championship Play-Off, 2nd Leg

So, D-day has arrived. We should be able to get through to the Final with our 2 goal lead from the 1st Leg in Cardiff. But no one should take anything for granted. West Ham need to go out there and put the tie beyond Cardiff City's reach. We need to earn that Final place all over again and be suitaby clincal in finising them off. And if they play with the same skill, application and commitment, we should do it. As discussed previously, it will be interesting to see how Cardiff set up and approach the match. Will they go for all-out attack, to try to turn the tie around, or will they sit back patiently, invite us forward and rely on catching us out on the counter-attack? What wil definitely do not need is to conceed an early goal, that would encouage the oppositon and really put the pressure on our players.

The midfield battle will be key. In the first leg we dominated midfield and dictated play for the vast majority of the game. Noble, O'Neill, Collison, etc, will need to replicate that dominance and keep Whittingham and co quiet. I am assuming that we will start with the same back four, with Taylor starting in the left-back slot and McCartney on the bench. We need to keep our fingers crossed that Carlton Cole is fit to start, as he is in ery good form and could be a match winner. Another potential match winner is Vaz Te, who has not scored in the last couple of matches, but hopefully will weight in with a vital goal or two in this match.

The Hammers starting line up is likely to be: Green, Demel, Taylor, Nolan, Tomkins, Reid, Noble, O'Neil, Collison, Cole, Vaz Te

Lets hope that the Hammers players exercise self-control and do not put in erratic challenges or allow themselves to be provoked. We certainly do not need a 10 man scenerio and we must ensure,if at all possible, that everyone is available for the Final, should we get there. COYI!

SJ. Chandos.

Zola was in the norwegian PL studios this weekend alongside Peter Beagrie as pundits. Although nothing was said directly to West Ham, he did get the question pre Newcastle - City about how important the relationship between manager and chairman is for a club, and for them to share the same ambitions. He started laughing when asked, and said is it a coincidence that you are asking me this?
He implied that he didn't have a great relationship with the david's and that it is vital to share the same filosophy to be succesfull.

He also talked passionately about Mancini's use of inside wingers cutting in to their better foot (no surprise really)

Honest as he is, when talking about Young & diving he got asked if he ever dived? Oh yes, many times, hah.

Not much West Ham tbf, and not very interesting either  just thought I'd share

Robert Green 'eyed by Spurs for free transfer switch'
West Ham's Robert Green has emerged as a transfer target for Spurs, as Harry Redknapp looks to add to his goalkeeping options.

Brad Friedel has enjoyed a fine first season for Tottenham, but the American will celebrate his 41st birthday later this month and Redknapp is keen to find a long-term replacement.

One man he is giving serious consideration to is England international Green, who will be out of contract in June, reports the People.

The 32-year-old has plenty of top-flight experience and the fact he is available on a free transfer will make him an attractive option to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who will be under pressure to find the funds for a new centre forward and central defender during the summer transfer window.

Redknapp, who plans to offload Heurelho Gomes, has been looking for another goalkeeper for some time.

He was rumoured to be interested in Tim Krul earlier in the season, but the Dutchman recently signed a new five-year contract at Newcastle United.

Spurs have also been linked with France international Hugo Lloris, but the Lyon star would cost around £10million.

Exclusive - Cottee issues West Ham with play-off warning

Tony Cottee has warned West Ham they cannot afford to be gung-ho as they bid to book their place in the Championship play-off final.

The Hammers lead 2-0 against Cardiff after the first leg of their semi-final ahead of this afternoon’s second leg, but their home form has been so patchy this season that the nerves are jangling at Upton Park.

And Cottee admits his former team must do all they can to protect their advantage.
Sam Allardyce will be telling them to keep it tight because they cannot afford to concede a goal— Tony Cottee

He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “West Ham have to go out to try to win the game, but they can’t afford to be gung-ho in the search for a killer goal.

“The home form has not been good, and that’s my concern. Sam Allardyce will be telling them to keep it tight because they cannot afford to concede a goal or the fans might get edgy and that’s when the wobbles might start. But if we get a third goal that will kill the tie off.

“West Ham are massive favourites, but one of the most dangerous things is knowing a draw will be enough. Then you can get caught in two minds.

“I think West Ham are a better team than Cardiff, but if West Ham freeze a bit they might get taken down. They’ve got to be very careful.”

f you happen to spot Robin van Persie in your local branch of B&Q this bank holiday Monday, it'll probably be because the Arsenal goal-getter is there to purchase a premier wheelbarrow with galvanised pan black frame, with which to push home the £250,000 per week Manchester City will be paying him next season. Although wildly optimistic Arsenal fans continue to cling to the faint hope that their resolutely non-commital star striker will remain at the Emirates next season, the recent purchase of Lukas Podolski, not to mention the draft being generated by the fluttering of Arsène Wenger's eyelashes in the general direction of Fulham's Clint Dempsey, would suggest that the chances of the 28-year-old either inking a new deal with the Gunners are slim to say the least.

Liverpool will attempt to consolidate their status as Premier League also-rans by bringing peripatetic Aston Villa striker Darren Bent to Anfield during the summer. Elsewhere on Merseyside, Everton want to shore up their defence by bringing lanky lank-haired West Brom centre-half Jonas Olsson to Goodison Park. A keen guitarist who wants to pursue a career as a human rights lawyer when he retires from football, the Swedish international should slot neatly into a back line comprised of like-minded renaissance men such as Phil Neville, Sylvain Distin and Tony Hibbert.

Paris St-Germain are ready to hurl a solid gold, diamond-encrusted spanner into the works of Chelsea's carefully hatched plans to bring the Napoli striker Ezequiel Lavezzi to Stamford Bridge, while the French side and Manchester City have both been told to curb their enthusiasm for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín, who José Mourinho insists is going nowhere.

The Crewe midfielder Nick Powell could find himself the subject of a bidding war this summer, with both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur apparently anxious to make the 18-year-old, whose 15 goals have helped the Railwaymen make the League Two play-offs this season, a household name. Meanwhile in Amsterdam, Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has hinted that his mooted move to Tottenham Hotspur is far from a done deal, with both Newcastle United and Arsenal rumoured to be interested in gazumping the recruitment officers at White Hart Lane.

Even if his side fail to triumph in the Championship play-offs, the Birmingham City defender Curtis Davies looks a good bet to be playing Premier League football next season, if talk of Southampton's interest in persuading to swap St Andrew's for St Mary's turns out to be true. The Watford centre-half Adrian Mariappa may also make his Premier League debut next season, with Reading hoping to succeed in luring him away from Vicarage Road this summer, where Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic failed in January.

West Ham United: Norwich & Swansea inspire Neil McDonald

West Ham assistant Neil McDonald says the promoted teams this season can take inspiration from Norwich and Swansea.

The Canaries and Swans have both stayed up with Premier League games to spare after winning promotion last season.

McDonald's side face Cardiff on Monday in their Championship semi-final second leg, leading 2-0 from the away game.

"The inspiration is Norwich and Swansea to a certain extent. They have gone up and done fantastically well," McDonald said.

"Whether it is ourselves, Birmingham, Cardiff of Blackpool, they will have huge hope considering what has happened this season with Norwich and Swansea.

"We all hang on to that so if we do get promoted then we can do exactly the same."

Jack Collison's brace at the Cardiff City Stadium seems to have put the Hammers in control of the play-off tie.
Did you know?

This fixture is a repeat of the opening day of the season, when Kenny Miller scored the only goal in injury time for Cardiff

But West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has experience of losing in a similar scenario before. His Blackpool team won 2-0 at Bradford in their Division Three (now League One) play-off away leg in 1995-96, but lost the home tie 3-0.

And McDonald accepts the job is not done yet for the Hammers, who missed out on automatic promotion on the final day of the regular season.

He said: "I think two goals away from home is fantastic and our home form over the last two months puts us in a good mood.

"I think the support we had the other night from the travelling fans was absolutely fantastic.

"I think that will bounce on to the home game and the whole place will be trying to take the roof off the stadium.

"It will make it an intimidating place to come to. There will be a fantastic atmosphere but it still won't be an easy game to get through.

"Planning and preparation is the key and we've done it in one game and hopefully we can do it in the second."

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay, a play-off winner as a Watford player, has not given up hope yet: "We need to score, not necessarily early on, but we need to score first.

"If we do that then we get a toe-hold back in the game again. We need to make sure we are disciplined going into the game. We can't have a tendency to go gung-ho from the first minute.

"People might want to go for it from the off, but we need to make sure that we're in the game.

"We know it's a stiff test but it's still only half-time. We've got to go there and ease our way into the game, looking to nick the first goal.
