Re: favourite or best season youve seen us haveThe end of the season when Hartson, Kitson, Lomas came in and changed us, kept us up.
The great escape with Tevez and co. When we finished 5th, Berkovic and Hartson were immense, i got used to winning most games, was crazy. Sorry i cant remember the years those were off the top of my head and im off to bed so cant be assed checking :p
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us haveLots of candidates for 'best' seasons for me - 74/5, 75/6, 79/80, 80/81 & 85/86 for obvious reasons.
76/77 dodging relegation was a particularly good one on the run-in, some of the football we played was dire, some was sublime (yeah, same old story, nothing much has changed there, has it?). 78/9, 80/81 & 81/2 for mayhem and a right laugh - but more for non-footballing reasons that none of us can talk about anymore (Actually, there's a bunch of us that could pick any season between 74 and 89 for non-footballing reasons, there's always some lively conversations and anecdotes that increasingly stretch the truth. If you youngsters ever have the misfortune to hear a bunch of us middle-aged farts ramble on about those days you know what I'm on about. Having said that, most of the stories I get to hear replayed these days do seem to have a kernel of truth that's vaguely associated with it . . ) But the best ones by far - for me - were under our 'Arry (ducks for cover). Yeah, I knew it wouldn't be a popular choice, but I can pick any two or three from around the turn of the century-ish where I saw West Ham do things I'd never thought I'd see. I certainly haven't seen anything like it since. Regardless of results, some of the football we played was just unbelievable, the players we had gave some magic to our team. My biggest regret about those years is the thought that I might never see such a group of talented players in our shirt again. Yes, we got caned more than a few times, but we were always on the move, always on the attack trying to nick a win, and when it came off it was just unbelievable. IMHO, that was probably the best football I've ever seen us play. I can't pick my favourite season from that era - too many variables, but that near-the-top finish was particularly good in 98/99. The following seasons were probably just as memorable. For me - and a few others on here - it's never been just about the results. It's been about the approach and style of play. That's what a few of us - who are increasingly outnumbered these days - think of as the West Ham way.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
I'm with Albie...not that I can remember much 64 Semi v Manure in the pissing rain at Sheffield, Johnny Sissons being the water boy 2 Wembley trips,Boyces 89th min(?) winner Then having our 3 lads do the county proud the following year How could anything WHU top that time cheers Nurse....I need my bed bath now please
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
This, we were almost unbeatable at home, football was brilliant and we had a team full ofentertainers who seemed to want to play for each other. I loved this era, even though Redknapp ended up being a bit of a wrong'un.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us haveLike others I'm torn between the 80/81 and 85/86 seasons but given I went to 50 games in the former, I'd vote for that.
Whenever these threads pop up I always feel obliged to nod to my old man who maintains that 1957/8 was the making of our Club.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
these for me as well. Always wonder what the Hartson Kitson Partnership would have brought if Paul could have stayed fit
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us haveHas to be the 2009 - 2010 season for me. We played some cracking stuff that season
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
The best thing for me, DH, was the optimism - or rather the feeling that there was no limits. Maybe that was the times generally with the old social systems breaking down, and my age then too but there's never been a time since when I felt the club could achieve literally anything. I'm finally starting to get a little of that again, but it could be my age again, with a touch of desperation
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have85-86 for me
can it ever be achieved again ?? SAM OUT
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
Years before my time, but if one tenth of the stuff I've heard about Malcolm Allison's 'training sessions' up to '57 is true, your old man is probably right.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have97-98 and 98-99 - had great home records in those seasons.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have2005-6 after promotion was a cracker! Top 10 finish and we won the F.A cup final on merit... Was such a feel good atmosphere, be amazing if we could have the same again
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
That season pretty much summed up pretty much what supporting West Ham is all about for me. After 3 pretty much dibolical seasons in a row (not including the final against preston), I looked at our squad and really did fear the worst. The finances were poor, the strikers and central midfield just didnt look a premier league standard, our defence was either very young or very old and we didn't have a premiership quality keeper. I would have taken a scrappy, poor season, finishing 17th all day with that squad. However we played quality attacking football all season. Marlon scored a bunch, Teddy, Yossi and Matty were class, Gabbidon and Ferdinand were oustanding, as were Carroll and Shaka. Finishing 9th, FA Cup final and beating the Spurs on the last day, giving them a 5th place finish. Quality
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have85/86 easily for me. I was 14 and the perfect age to enjoy it. The return of Dev (my dad was so excited that he was playing when we went to city lol), the arrival of Frank Mac and Mark Ward, West Ham on tv and winning lol, scrabbling around for the odd radio commentary, the seemingly endless run of games at the end (and Tonkas pens that kept us in it) it was just a perfect season except for the last Saturday. Even the total anti climax being at the everton game has passed now.
Amongst all the dvd recorders, set top boxes and sky+ I kept a video recorder going for years solely to watch the season review, sadly the machine is buggered now. 2006 also has a strong memory of my Dad ringing me from a bar in Tenerife where he had watched the villa game to say 'I think we might have a team here'
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us haveAnother for 85/86. First season I started going, aged 10 and tyhought it was like this all the time... how wrong was I!!!!!!!
There were some great seasons during the Redknapp era, plus I was older and went pretty much home and away each week, but I still think 85/86, so nearly did it!
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have98/99 - great league performances. We were second at one stage in November. and 99/00 for the European run/Di Canio's best performances/THAT goal.
05/06 - that run in Jan/Feb. The FA cup run/final. Also...there was something about 06/07..Noble and Tevez goals against spuds. Will never forget them.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have1980/81 was possibly the best in terms of how good our squad was that year and how much better they were than the rest of the division with promotion never really in doubt.
However, my favourite season, without a shadow of a doubt, was 1985 /86. Once we got our momentum going that year, I thought we would never lose no matter who we were playing. Obviously we did lose some but even when we went a goal down, there was no panic - we had TC and Macca on fire and we always thought one or both would score. Like thousands of others I travelled up to Smethwick Station on the train for that final saturday of the season believeing we could actually win the title. Alas, it was not to be but at least we took it to the wire and unfortunately the way things have changed so much in English football, it is something our younger fans will never experience.
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us haveNo-one has gone for 92-93going up on one goal over Pompey - promotion to the then new Premier League for the first time.
We played some great stuff that season under Bonzo Won 5-1 at Bristol City 6-0 at home vs Sunderland 4-0 away to Bristol Rovers 5-3 home to oxford Oh and the Argentina Style Away kit and the Anglo Italian Cup
Re: favourite or best season youve seen us have
Same for me. Saw every game that season and some of the football we played was breathtaking. Dev and Trev just ripping sides a new one for fun.
