Granded Haaland Vs Dawson could be a bit of a massacre

I agree, no way Haaland could stop Dawson from scoring at set pieces.....

I know his Dad was a decent footballer, but don't know much about Grandad Haaland?

This proves to me its hard to win any competition and we are favourites to win europa at this stage but I will tell you now we won't be when these teams come down into the europa league it will be our luck to get a very hard team being our first time back in Europe

Genk seem to be playing quite a weak side, settling for third?

I would absolutely love to play Barcelona.

What a night that would be!

So the next round is 2nd place v CL dropouts, is the round after (when we now come in) an open draw?

Not sure, I assumed the group winners would play the winners of the next round, but haven't been able to see confirmation of that. I guess we'd probably prefer an open draw.

It's now three and a half months until our next competitive European game! March 10th.

Expected more of Marseille, tbh, who have not won a single game (albeit drawing 4 times).

Celtic are properly crap these days, too, aren't they?

Agreed, though theirs looks like a bit of a group of death, at least on paper.

I wouldn't expect them to finish above any half decent teams from Germany or Spain. Rangers have done well to make the next round.

Teams through with us to last 16- Lyon, Monaco (both done well in Europe but mid table in France- nothing to fear), Leverkusen (look a decent side).

Teams through in Europa so far (seeded in bold):

Group A: Lyon & Rangers
Group B: Monaco
Group C:
Group D: Frankfurt & Olympiacos
Group E: Galatasary & Lazio
Group F:
Group H: Leverkusen & Real Betis
Group G: West Ham

Teams dropping down/possibly dropping down:

Group A: RB Leipzig/Brugge
Group B: Atletico/Porto/AC
Group C: Dortmund
Group D: Sheriff
Group E: Barca/Benfica
Group F: Atlanta/Villarreal
Group G: Lille/Strasbourg/Wolfsburg/Sevilla
Group H: Zenit St Petersburg

I’d expect the standard to dramatically increase from here on in. I’m not sure how many of those teams we’d be clear favourites against over two legs…….probably only a handful.

For all the talk of squad depth and ‘second eleven’ you do wonder whether we’ll be needing to play the first team in the Europa through the knockout stages rather than the amount of rotation that we’ve done in the group stages. 7 games til legend status….(potentially)

From now on it has to be full strength for me.
After winning our first game it felt like we has a safe net.
No such security in the knock outs plus tougher teams.

First leg will be between Liverpool away and villa at home.
Second leg between villa home and Spurs away.

I like many will be expecting us to go full strength from now on.

The level of opponents will likely increase significantly as I’ve highlighted above and in knock-out football we can’t afford to rest players, certainly not 4 or 5.

On the group stages we’ve benefited from having one of the weaker groups and the fact that we started well meant that we were always pretty ‘safe’ and could afford to lose a game.

The knock out rounds will be far more cut throat, one poor game and you’ll have a mountain climb or be out.

Is it confirmed that we will get the 2nd leg at home in the round of 16? So the away game will be Thursday 10th March and the home on Thursday 17th March?

The draw is on 25th February by the way

Interesting to listen to Moyes' post-match comments last night. Reading between the lines, he basically suggested that if we drew a big gun he'd think about changing the personnel of the cup side.

I pay zero attention to Euro competitions (and football in general) outside of West Ham. Is there any way we can play Marseille in any future round?

Worth noting we are certain to play the first leg away on March 10 and the second at home on March 17.
