Marseille are currently heading into the draw for the play offs in the conference league... Spurs are also currently heading into that play off draw.

As it stands...

Sparta, Sociedad, Warsaw, Olympiacos, Lazio, Zvezda, Betis and Zagreb will play off against one of Brugge, Atletico, Sporting, Sheriff, Benfica, Atalanta, Wolfsburg or Zenit.

To get the chance to play against Lyon, Monaco, Napoli, Frankfurt, Galatasaray, Braga, Leverkursen or West Ham in the last 16.

Rangers, PSV, Leicester, Fenerbahce, Marseille, Midtjylland, Celtic and Genk will all be dropping into the play offs with a tie against one of LASK, Partizan, Roma, Jablonec, Slavia, Bratislava, Spurs and Basel.

The winners of those ties would go into the last 16 draw to face one of Tel-Aviv, Gent, Glimt, Alkmaar, Feyenoord, Copenhagen, Rennes, and Qarabag.

As it stands the last 16 will be from:

Automatic Qualifiers:
  • Lyon, Monaco, Napoli, Eintracht Frankfurt, Galatasaraay, Braga, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham
Last 32 Play Off - 2nd place Europa
  • Sparta Prague, Real Sociedad, Legia Warsaw, Olympiacos, Lazio, Red Star Belgrade, Real Betis, Dinamo Zagreb
Last 32 Play Off - CL drop outs
  • Club Bruges, Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Sheriff Tiraspol, Benfica, Atalanta, Wolfsburg, Zenit St Petersburg
Is there any seeding for the Round of 16?

Or can we theoretically play Lyon, Napoli, other group winners etc straight away?

It's a good question. My suspicions would be that there is no seeding. After all, why would a Europa group winner be seeded over a 3rd placed Champs League drop-out? Only thing more likely to be is some way of stopping clubs from the same country playing each other in this round.

I think that the last 16 of EL is 8 ties, as follows

[winner of EL group] -v- [2nd in EL group / 3rd in CL group]

As such, if you finish top of your EL group, you can only play a winner of the play off.

And, if you are required to play in the play off, what awaits you is a winner of a (different) EL group, from which you might have emerged.

What is possible is that [a Prem club] could come 3rd in a CL group at the same time that [we] come top of our group and Leicester come 2nd in theirs.

I do not know whether, for sake of argument, we could win our group only to await the outcome of a Man U - Leicester play off. I think not, but we could certainly end up playing Atletico

Never see that in any UEFA documentation. Which implies it is an open draw.

But top teams are not in the play offs

so, by that logic, they are set aside before the play offs take place

if you're right - and I accept you might be - we could end up playing again the team that we just played to win our group (say it's Zagreb, who win their play off).

Surely, it can't play out like that.

I believe the Round of 16 draw is seeded and that the 8 EL group winners are drawn against the 8 playoff (Round of 32) winners. Clubs from the same countries cannot be drawn against each other in this round. Group winners will also be at home for the 2nd leg.

Don't know how to post a link but it is on UEFA's website.

There is no mention about drawing a team from the same group you were previously in. So theoretically should we win the group and Zagreb finish 2nd and win their playoff, we could draw them in round of 16.

quoted from the UEFA Europa site:

How the draw works
• The group winners are seeded and will be drawn against the winners of the knockout round play-offs.

• The UEFA Europa League group winners play the second leg at home.

• Clubs from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.

So essentially protection for the Champion's League drop outs as they can't meet another Champion's League drop out?

Way I think it goes is for the Play Off 32 draw to be made in the time immediately after the 6th group match.

There is then an option to make the next draw at that point, so that the play offs teams know who to expect if they win, but I think the next part of the draw - given the publicised date - is in fact next Spring, so that we find out who we're playing once the Play Off 32 matches have completed.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that we will be joined in the last 16 round of matches by Man United (CL drop outs) and Leicester (32 winners).

Honestly, the current 2nd placed Europa teams don't particularly look any weaker than the current 3rd placed CL teams, bar Atletico, who I expect will qualify for the CL Knockouts anyway and be replaced in the Europa Playoff by Porto/AC.

I also like that the second leg of the Round of 16 will be at the London Stadium. That feels like the sort of push that we might need.

Are there away goals? That's been removed from football now basically, hasn't it?

We can win this competition if we play the way we have been, and add 2-3 clever signings in January. That would be mental. But we have the best central midfielder in the world playing for us, and some other excellent players too, so why not?

Quarter final stage is the first unseeded draw. Anyone can play anyone from that point on. No seeds and teams from the same country are not kept apart.

Round of 16 will see the 8 group winners seeded and playing the second leg at home.
They will be drawn against one of the 8 winners of the UCL 3rd and UEL 2nd play off games.

This draw will be made on 25th Feb

First legs: 10 March - away
Second legs: 17 March - home
(assuming we win the group)

As it stands...

Lyon, Monaco, Napoli, Frankfurt, Galatasaray, Braga, Leverkursen and West Ham will be seeded.

Sparta (would be ironic), Sociedad, Warsaw, Olympiacos, Lazio, Zvezda, Betis and Zagreb will play off against Brugge, Atletico, Sporting, Sheriff, Benfica, Atalanta, Wolfsburg or Zenit.
Really not a great deal to fear there, a couple of stand outs, but we'd go close if at our best.

Rangers, PSV, Leicester, Fenerbahce, Marseille, Midtjylland, Celtic and Genk will all be dropping into the play offs of the conference league with a tie against one of LASK, Partizan, Roma, Jablonec, Slavia, Bratislava, Spurs and Basel.

The winners of those ties would go into the last 16 draw to face one of Tel-Aviv, Gent, Glimt, Alkmaar, Feyenoord, Copenhagen, Rennes, and Qarabag.

Still a lot of changes to these places to come though, two big games remaining for a lot of those teams. We have done so well to get to where we are after four games.

I must have read something old. That's probably tougher than a free draw.

Going to have to strongly disagree with you on that one.

The 3 locations you mentioned above were a right ball-ache to get to, & like you said they were only qualifiers, many people were (probably naively) waiting and anticipating us to make the group stages.

Return flights to Vienna were around £50-£100 on saturday when the fixtures were released. I would predict we'll be taking around 10,000 fans out there for that trip should we be ok to travel.

The anticipated 2,000 tickets for the game will be like gold dust.
