With Austria now locked down, hopefully they don't roll over our ban for the away leg of the knockouts - they can't do that, can they?!

I very much doubt they can do that.

Considering that loss to Brentford sent a lot of us into the last international break on a bit of a downer..... :scarfer:

Looks like a few of the better countries' clubs are coming our way*, from 3rd place in CL, after the 5th round of matches tonight.

Atalanta or Villareal (from Man U's group).

Possibly Sevilla and Benfica, too.

Zenit are surely also definites, given Malmo's single point and terrible g/d

*if we finish top of course.

Doesn’t matter if we finish top or second, these teams will drop into the round of 32 playoff round. We are certain to play them if we finish second and may face them if we finish first.

Also I’d say it’s more likely Barcelona drop into the EL than Benfica.
Barca are two points ahead of Benfica with one game left to play.
Final fixtures: Bayern vs Barca, Benfica vs Dynamo Kiev (bottom, out, nothing to play for)
If Benfica win, Barca would have to win away to Bayern to progress. A draw wouldn’t be enough as Benfica beat them on head-to-head.

Call me an idiot but I'd love a crack at this Barca side, knocking them out of Europe would be a legendary moment in the clubs history.

Good points; I was looking at it wrongly.

I hate to say this, but I reckon they would thrash us, even this depleted version of themselves.

I think we'd beat them.

The team to avoid for the time being is Napoli.

I agree with some, let’s have a go at Barcelona home and away. Then imagine our standing going into any transfer discussions?

Think big, act big, play big and everything will become ……..massive!

I don't think we'd beat either Barca or Napoli over a two-legged tie, in all honesty.

I think we'd make every effort to do so, but there's something about Busquets, Jordi Alba and de Jong that makes me think that they would simply out-pass us and pick us off. The team they have out there at the moment doesn't appear to include that young kid, Pedri, who I think will replace Ronaldo and Messi as the single best player in the world, over the next few years.

They're seventh in La Liga, the only team they've beaten in Europe is Dynamo Kiev, do you think they are a better team than us this year? Do you fear any particular players, or just think we'd bottle it?

I think the atmosphere at their club must be pretty bad right now, and it would only get worse if they end up in the Europa- a trophy which they'd quickly forget if they won. I'm not saying we'd be favourites, but I wouldn't say there's much in it .

I'd agree that Napoli are a better side, and probably by a reasonable margin.

Potential Champions League teams I'm most keen to avoid- Athletico, Dortmund and, to a lesser extent, Porto.

You're not an idiot at all. To be in a position to consider this or play them is in itself a sign of how far we've come and where we believe we are heading.

I think I posted a reply to Bubbs' post when you were uploading these questions.

In summary, I think that they are set to improve after a terrible start to this season, that they will only possibly finish 3rd, but, if they do, they will see EL as their passport to CL, given their travails in La Liga and that there would still be enough experience of this type of football for them to not struggle to beat us.

Why would they thrash us?

We haven't lost a game by 2 goals in almost a year (since Liverpool Jan 2021). During that time we've played far better sides like Chelsea, Liverpool, Man C and Man U (pre this season) on multi occasions and not been thrashed.

Barca would be favourites to beat us over two legs because of the experience of some of the players they have but we'd certainly have a decent chance. If it wasn't for that Benfica striker fluffing his lines twice when clean through in the last minute Barca would for all intents and purposes have been knocked out of the champs with a game to play.

Napoli would be a far more difficult assignment.

(EDITED the stat)

I wouldn't get too carried away about the demise of Barca, they are 2ns to Bayern in what looks on paper to be the toughest of all groups.

Slipping to 7th in the table hasn't been ideal for them, but again, two wins and they are top four again. I can't see them catching Madrid, but they will finish top four.

All of that said, I do think we could have a real good crack at them right now. Us fully fit and flying v them in their current state... I'd fancy it!

That's a fair point  So basically, if they drop into the Europa, we want them to start winning games domestically!

Still, Declan leading the boys out at the Camp Nou would be some moment.

I actually think we would beat them quite badly.
