Frank Williams: 1942-2021

Post by -DL- »

I think he deserves his own thread, rather than being hidden away in the F1 thread.

An absolute legend of the sport, who looked adversity in the face and beat it, each and every time.

RIP Frank, you can now take up running again.

Nine constructor and seven driver championships, not a bad record for as near as you can get in F1 to a garden shed team.

RIP Sir F.

Yup, one of the giants of F1, what he achieved from such a starting position is just incredible.

Was there anything more iconic in F1 than Mansell v Piquet in a Williams, or Senna's black Lotus going wheel to wheel with Mansells Williams?

To think this man but an empire that outdid motor manufacturers like Ferrari.

RIP

Sad loss, an absolute giant as others have said to take on the likes of Ferrari and beat them is mindboggling.

He was the oldest living quadriplegic battled on for much longer that he should have done. True fighter.

If you want to know more about his early life in motorsport ie 1964 - 77 ( which to be honest is more interesting than 1978 onwards when he was in effect a commercial director ) then 'Piers Courage - Last of the Gentleman Racers' by Adam Cooper is a good read as it takes you from 1964 up to 1970 when Franks best mate Courage was killed during the Dutch GP at Zandvoort in the works De Tomaso run by Williams.

Adam Coopers book of Piers Courage is indeed excellent, a real window into a world that no longer exists.

Frank Williams was an extraordinary man in so many ways. I don't think his contribution to F1 can be over-estimated. They don't make em like that anymore. RIP.
