West Ham's first of two games in 24 hours against Werder Bremen ended in defeat thanks to a first half strike from Johannes Eggestein.

The teenage striker scored the only goal of the game with just 12 minutes on the clock to condemn Slaven Bilic's side to their first defeat of pre-season - despite starting with new signings Marko Arnautovic and Pablo Zabaleta.

Although both Joe Hart and Javier Hernandez were on the bench, neither were involved - although both should play some part of this afternoon's second encounter.

Despite the reversal, West Ham assistant manager Nikola Jurcevic was particularly pleased with the efforts of one of two of the younger members of the travelling squad - specifically Declan Rice and Nathan Holland, both of whom started the game.

“Both of them were good today," said Jurcevic. "Not only today, they were good during the training sessions and in some friendly games in Austria with Fulham and Sturm Graz.

"They are young, they are fresh, they have some quality and they have been a really positive surprise in this pre-season camp."

Adrian San Miguel Del Castillo (7) Excellent performance despite conceding the game's only goal.

Sam Byram (6) Played for an hour before being replaced.

Aaron Cresswell (6) Another hour under his belt.

Reece Burke (6) A good run out for the youngster, now back at the club following a season on loan.

Declan Rice (7) Rice continues to impress - one of just three players to last the full 90 minutes.

Mark Noble (6) Replaced by Pedro Obiang after sustaining a toe injury.

Josh Cullen (7) Busy as a bee at the heart of United's midfield.

Moses Makasi (6) One of only three players to remain on the pitch for the entire match.

Toni Martinez (6) Toiled hard for little reward.

Pedro Obiang (6) (Replaced Noble) A solid performance from the former Spanish Under 21 international.

Jose Fonte (6) (Replaced Collins) One of several substitutes who were introduced on the hour mark.

Marko Arnautovic (6) (Replaced Burke) A debut in claret and blue for the former Stoke man and new record transfer fee holder.

Arthur Masuaku (6) (Replaced Cresswell) Just about has the edge over the man he replaced for the left back spot currently.
