Dagenham & Redbridge 0 West Ham United 1

Saturday, 19th July 2003
by Lee Harvey

Despite the game being advertised as a West Ham Reserve team it was more like a West Ham fourth team that took to the pitch at Victoria Road this afternoon.

A poor game was only made a spectacle because of Anton Ferdinand who was named captain for the game and oozed class throughout.

A team mainly made up of under-19?EUR(TM)s matched Dagenham in every department and showed the extra class that one the game. The first 20 minutes were evenly matched in terms of possession and shots but on 22 minutes impressive striker Greg Pearson scored after being put through one on one. He made a hash of his first effort but no mistake with the second following the initial save by Dagenham keeper James Pullen; Pearson cooly slotting the ball into the back of an empty net.

Not much else happened in a poor first half; captain Ferdinand was unlucky not to score from a corner when the ball fell at his feet but the goalie made a good save.

The second half was probably worse than the first, with our Conference hosts threatening only now and again. Dagenham, who had changed most of their team at half time failed to score despite creating a few half chances. However the best chance came from Us when a swerving half volley from out side the box forced the Dagenham goalie to tip over the bar.

KUMB Man of the Match: Anton Ferdinand (10)

Anton showed class today against experienced strikers. He won headers in the air, tackled cleanly, brought the ball out of defence and cleared when needed, he also spread the play well with some excellent balls. Was captain for the day and marshalled the defence. Impressive.
