Fred Sears

Squad Number: 19
Position: Striker
Born: 27th Nov 1989, Hornchurch
Signed: 1st Jul 2007 (£0)
Contract: 2 years (signed March 2008)
Previous Club: None

KUMB Awards: Young Player of the Year (runner up) 2007/08; Goal of the Season (runner up) 2007/08

Not for many a year has a youth team product been so keenly anticipated by the Boleyn faithful. When Sears nodded the winner on his first team debut to win all three points against Blackburn years of promise were finally realised - and a new local hero was born.

Sears - now a regular at England youth level - has been prolific at both reserve and youth team levels during the 07/08 season, averaging more than a goal per game.

Still only 18, the youngster has the world at his feet and the chance to emulate former home grown heroes such as Tony Cottee.

(Replaced Cole, 86 mins) Not really on for long enough to make an impression.

2008/09 Match Notes & Ratings

0-3 v Liverpool (h) 9th May 2009
by Gordon Thrower

(Replaced Di Michele, 70 mins) Requires service. Received none.

1-0 v Stoke City (a) 2nd May 2009
by Gordon Thrower

(Replaced Di Michele, 89 mins) Again not on long enough to have any effect other than running down the clock.

0-1 v Chelsea (h) 25th April 2009
by Gordon Thrower

(Replaced Dyer, 61 mins) No real contribution in the period he was on.

0-0 v West Bromwich Albion (h) 16th March 2009
by Gordon Thrower

Lots of running that seemed to come to an abrupt halt as soon as he came anywhere near the box.

0-0 v West Bromwich Albion (h) 16th March 2009
by John Simkin

He never looked a real threat in front of goal and irritatingly was constantly getting caught offside.

1-2 v Bolton Wanderers (a) 21st February 2009
by John Simkin

(Replaced Spector, 85 mins) Sears must be feeling terribly frustrated by the way he is being treated by Zola. At the moment he is not being given a fair chance to show what he can do.

1-1 v Middlesbrough (h) 14th February 2009
by John Simkin

(Replaced Boa Morte, 49 mins) Fairly lively but unfortunately none of the real chances came to him. Needs to play from the beginning if he is to show what he can do.

1-1 v Middlesbrough (h) 14th February 2009
by East Stand Martin

(Replaced Boa Morte, 49 mins) A lot of running with little service or reward.

by Gordon Thrower

(Replaced Boa Morte, 49 mins) A lot of running with little service or reward.

2-0 v Hartlepool United (a) 24th January 2009
by John Simkin

(Replaced Cole, 78 mins) Held the ball up well and went close with his own chance of a shot.

0-0 v Portsmouth (h) 15th November 2008
by East Stand Martin

It wasn’t quite working for Freddie out there in the first half though his pace caused an occasional problem.

0-0 v Portsmouth (h) 15th November 2008
by Gordon Thrower

It wasn’t quite working for Freddie out there in the first half though his pace caused an occasional problem.

1-3 v Everton (h) 8th November 2008
by East Stand Martin

Continues to improve. His pace and tenacity caused numerous problems for the Everton defence.

Continues to improve. His pace and tenacity caused numerous problems for the Everton defence.

1-1 v Middlesbrough (a) 1st November 2008
by Gordon Thrower

Caused problems a-plenty for the home defence in the first half but faded a bit in the second.

1-3 v Bolton Wanderers (h) 5th October 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Etherington, 79) No significant impact.

3-1 v Newcastle United (h) 20th September 2008
by Alex Shilling

(replaced Cole, 87) Didn't have time to do much, created a chance for Boa Morte however.

3-1 v Newcastle United (h) 20th September 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Cole, 87) Full of running and might have got a penalty had the ref spotted Coloccini’s sneaky trip.

4-1 v Macclesfield Town (h) 27th August 2008
by Graeme Howlett

Largely uninvolved and outmuscled. One good chance where he blasted instead of placed his shot. Doesn't seem to possess a trick when in possession.

0-3 v Manchester City (a) 24th August 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Cole, 31) Andy Warhol once said something very profound about everyone being famous for 15 minutes. That was all the time Sears had (though it’s safe to assume that Warhol did not have a short run out in Manchester before being sacrificed at half-time in mind when he made his statement).

0-3 v Manchester City (a) 24th August 2008
by Alex Shilling

(replaced Cole, 31) Didn't have time to make much of an impact. Subbed for Mullins at half time.

2-1 v Wigan Athletic (h) 16th August 2008
by Nick Bull

(replaced Ashton, 73) A couple of good runs and won the ball off defenders a few times.

2-1 v Wigan Athletic (h) 16th August 2008
by East Stand Martin

(replaced Ashton, 73) A couple of good runs and won the ball off defenders a few times.

2007/08 Match Notes & Ratings

2-2 v Aston Villa (h) 10th May 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Solano, 80) Also failed to make an impression.

1-4 v Manchester United (a) 3rd May 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Mullins, 75) His introduction was too little too late – we had already settled back into defensive mode.

1-4 v Manchester United (a) 3rd May 2008
by Alex Shilling

(replaced Mullins, 75) Closed people down, and did all he could in the short time he was on.

2-1 v Derby County (h) 19th April 2008
by Gordon Thrower

Looked dangerous on the few occasions we played the ball to his feet or into areas to give him a run. Only we didn’t do that enough, so he spent much of the game hidden by the sort of invisibility field much beloved of rotten sci-fi writers.

0-1 v Portsmouth (h) 8th April 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Zamora, 58) Quite lively in spells though starved of service.

1-1 v Everton (a) 22nd March 2008
by Graeme Howlett

(replaced Boa Morte, 50) Looked lively again; so close to winning the game at the death.

2-1 v Blackburn Rovers (h) 17th March 2008
by Alex Shilling

(replaced Solano, 76) What can you say? What a debut, absolutely unbelievable. His finish was reminiscent of a young Tony Cottee's.

2-1 v Blackburn Rovers (h) 17th March 2008
by Gordon Thrower

(replaced Solano, 76) Played as they say “without fear.” Full of running and chasing and the goal displayed both intelligence and instinct. More importantly, he appears to be the sort of striker we’ve been missing of late with Bellamy’s absence. Well done son!
